Perennials Below 1'H

Find perennials that remain below 1 foot high under most conditions. These plants are perfectly suited for the front of the perennial border, garden, and landscape and many are suitable for groundcovers beneath larger plants and as spillers for containers and over walls. Some of the lower growing perennials in this group, like Frogfruit, may also be suitable for popping in between pavers and as an excellent lawn replacement. Growing conditions and how well a plant is established may affect it's ultimate size.

The large lemony yellow, lightly fragrant, cupped flowers can reach up to 5" across and open from long showy pointed buds that are often tinged red with flowers opening in the evening and closing up the following morning. The flowers are held against a contrasting foil of dark green to gray green, narrow, glossy foliage and the plants are pollinated by Sphinx moths that are sometimes confused with hummingbirds. The Missouri Evening Primrose, Oenothera macrocarpa or O. missouriensis, is one of the most recognizable US native perennial wildflowers and has long been a desirable garden perennial for its showy flowers, toughness, and long season of flowering that can begin as early as midspring and may continue into mid and late summer. It is a clump-forming, taprooted perennial native to the west central US in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, southern Arkansas, and of course Missouri that is typically found in very well-drained, gravelly to sandy to loamy, typically alkaline, often dry soils. For the gardener in other parts of the country it will need excellent drainage in a relatively dry soil in a full to mostly sunny site to do well and it does not like to be crowded. The flowers are followed by large winged seedpods that are sometimes dried and used in cut flower arrangements and the plants may reseed on exposed soils. Item# 12803

Shades of red, burnt orange, golden yellow, and green are randomly splashed across the glossy evergreen foliage of this durable groundcover. Ogon Nishiki Asiatic Jasmine, a.k.a. Salsa, Summer Sunset, and Golden Brocade, creates a fiery splash of color anywhere in the garden or spilling from containers, over walls, or even from hanging baskets. Trachelospermum asiaticum is a naturally evergreen, 6-12" high groundcover to small twining vine that can produce creamy yellow fragrant flowers similar to Confederate or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, when grown as a vine or when allowed to trail from hanging baskets and over retaining walls, though it is generally infrequent and is the exception rather than the rule. Few plants can compete with the disposition of this dense groundcover once it is fully established in the landscape making it an easy and reliable choice for landscapers and tough to garden in areas, like beneath trees, where few other plants can thrive or in parking lot islands. It is heat loving, both sun and shade tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and has few pest or disease issues particularly when grown in soil with average or better drainage. For the best and brightest foliage coloration some direct sunlight during the day is beneficial and the more the better. Probably best suited to zones 8 and warmer for inground plantings but it can be used as a groundcover in containers beneath larger plants. Item# 941

The upright to arching stems are brightly adorned with hanging clusters of red, red-orange, to rarely yellow tubular flowers beginning in late spring and continuing until late summer. Pine-Leaved Penstemon or Beardtongue, Penstemon pinifolius, is a very low shrub-like perennial whose upright to arching stems are adorned with fine 1" long narrow deep green foliage that arises from what can become a woody base. Pineleaf or Pine-Leaved Penstemon is native to the dry desert regions of SE Arizona and SW New Mexico but is tolerant of moist conditions provided it has a very well-drained sandy to rocky mineral soil. It has been reported to be hardy into zone 3 but may require a 'dry' mulch and a protected area. This is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner and we feel if it can perform exceptionally well in humid England it should do well in the humid Southeastern US. Item# 12419

Pink Octopus Japanese Bellflower, Campanula

Campanula 'Pink Octopus' PP18885, EU25441

Hundreds of Japanese-lantern like buds open to display the unusual, downward facing, deep rosy pink flowers with strappy petals, that lighten toward their tips and are red speckled on the inside, are produced in late spring and early to midsummer with some repeat into fall. The flowers are held in large clusters of up to 50 flowers from the upright flower stems. Pink Skyrocket Foam Flower, Tiarella

Tiarella 'Pink Skyrocket' PP13382, EU13697

This wonderful low groundcover produces dense cone-shaped, upright flower spikes with red stems in mid to late spring, with some flowering later in the season, and are composed of tiny ball-shaped shrimp-pink buds that open to display the tiny white flowers. The flowers are held just above the palmate bluish-green to green foliage with each lobe displaying a black to burgundy main vein. They will prefer a moist soil with ample organic matter and average or better drainage. The flowers are reported to be fragrant and are likely pollinated by smaller bees.
