Shade Tolerant Plants

Plants for shady sites. These are plants that are either tolerant of shade ranging to those that thrive in shady conditions and may sulk in the heat and intensity of summer sun. Most of these will tolerate a short period of cool sunlight for an hour or two very early in the day or in the very late evening as well as filtered shade (as an amateur photographer I think of the period when light is in the warm yellow tones) and we try to denote that in our descriptions and under the 'Outdoor Light' heading. Sunlight intensity in the northern hemisphere is lower at more northerly latitudes than those that are at more southerly latitudes and are closer to the equator. For example, the French or Mophead Hydrangea generally prefers lower intensity light levels but still need enough sunlight to set buds and flower well. In the north they can be grown as full sun plants whereas in the southern portion of the US they will do best where they receive shade during the hottest portion of the day like on the east side of a structure. Otherwise, even if the soil is moist they are unable to pull moisture up from the root zone through transpiration fast enough to keep the foliage turgid (non-wilting) but are typically soon back to their old self once the light intensity drops enough for them to catch back up.

The fine dark green linear foliage is tipped with a slightly larger rounded pad and adorns fine trailing to twining stems. The Grass-Leaved Hoya, Hoya retusa, produces white waxy flowers that are centered by a nicely contrasting deep burgundy 'eye' in spring and on and off during the growing season on mature plants. The flowers are born singly and in small clusters. This unusual Hoya hails from India and its fine stems lend it to use as a hanging basket specimen, allow it to spill from containers like the 'head' pots as wild looking hair, and it can be used as a groundcover below larger plants that require similar conditions as long as there is ample bright light to keep it growing and healthy. Like most Hoyas, allow the soil to become semi-dry between waterings although this species can tolerate a little more moisture than most. Item# 12294

Hanging clusters of buttery yellow fragrant flowers that are centered by a purple to burgundy star-shaped corona are produced during the warmer months of the year. Hoya cumingiana, or Paluki in its native Phillipines, is somewhat of a sprawling shrub-like Hoya with closely stacked small rounded glossy medium green foliage that may be at its best when trained to a support like a small trellis. Its foliage is nice enough that it could be grown for its architectural form with the flowers simply as a bonus. This is considered to be one of the easier to grow shrub-like Hoyas that mainly needs to be allowed to dry out somewhat between waterings. The fragrant flowers are likely to draw butterflies and other pollinators. Its ease of growth, unusual looking foliage, and fragrant flowers make this Hoya one of the more sought after species. Hoya obscura, Waxflower

Hoya obscura

Hanging clusters of small individual flowers are centered by waxy yellow, star-shaped coronas with a creamy white to pink tinged halo and recurving fuzzy corollas are produced during the growing season. Hoya obscura is one of the more vigorous and easier to grow vining waxflowers that is well-suited to hanging basket culture or give it a trellis or other support for its twining vines to climb. The major leaf veins are fairly prominent in this species even from the upperside of the medium green foliage and under cool direct sunlight the foliage can become more olive green and may even take on red tones. To some the flowers have a light fragrance and it may be most noticeable at night or very early in the day. The mother plant was sold to us as Hoya pusilla, and we thank Rachel for pointing this out for us, so if you have purchased that species from us it is H. obscura. Item# 12367
