Dwarf Sasanqua Camellias (2 to 5 feet high)
Need a reliable fall flowering, low maintenance, evergreen hedge or shrub? These 2-5' high dwarf Sasanqua Camellias may be just the ticket! Flowering can begin as early as October and may last into the new year and unlike the large type Japonica Camellias the petals of the flowers can add a blanket of color beneath the plant as well on the plant. These are generally slow growing densely branching plants that require almost no pruning to keep them in top form. The Sasanqua Camellias are fairly adaptable to soil types and will revel in full sun to part sun conditions. They do still prefer a well-drained, average moist, fertile, acidic soil and an organic mulch mulch for optimum growth, vigor, and flowering. These miniatures of the Camellia world also make easy Bonsai specimens. See our Camellia and Sasanqua Growing Guide for more detailed growing, pruning, fertilizing, and planting information.
This award winner boasts 3" wide, brilliant pink, formal double flowers that are produced very early in the season, October to December. The flowers may show golden stamens at times. Chansonette Sasanaqua Camellia, a seedling of the famed Shi-Shi Gashira and a C. hiemalis type, is a moderately vigorous, broadly spreading, small to medium-sized evergreen shrub with a somewhat loose and open habit growing to about 4-5' high and nearly twice as wide. It has medium-textured, deep green foliage typical of most Sasanquas and should make for a colorful fall accent or informal hedge. Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions.
