1" bright pink powderpuff shaped flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year atop the finely textured almost fern-like low growing foliage and stems. The Sunshine Mimosa is a thornless spreading native perennial well-suited for use as a lawn replacement. It tolerates only light foot traffic but can be used between stepping stones in walks, in natural areas like meadows, prairies, and roadsides, as well as a soil stabilizer on slopes. Sunshine Mimosa, Mimosa strigillosa, is best adapted to average moist sandy loams and is a common native perennial with the heaviest populations in Florida and Louisiana but it is also common along the Texas Gulf Coast. In zones 9B and 10 it tends to remain evergreen, in area with colder winters stems may freeze back to ground level and then re-emerge once warm weather arrives. Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other garden beneficials. Item# 11922

Susan Brigham Passion Flower, Passionvine

Passiflora 'Susan Brigham'

Huge pendant rich magenta colored flowers dangle below the rich green smooth tri-lobed foliage of this vigorous hybrid Passion Flower from summer to fall. Susan Brigham Passionvine is a Patrick Worley hybrid in the Tacsonia group named in honor of his mother. The up to 6" wide pendant flowers sport bright yellow anthers and a tiny fringe of deep purple filaments. It flowers best in full sun but in hot summer climates it will do best where it receives shade during the heat of the day. Susan Brigham is considered to be self-pollinating by some although most sources suggest it should be cross pollinated by another member of the Tacsonia group in order to produce the large elongated banana-shaped fruit filled with seeds surrounded by tropical tasting orange flesh. As yet it has done well in full sun through our Louisiana summers. The foliage is relished by Gulf Fritillary caterpillars (and most likely by butterflies of the Longwing group as well). Item# 11624

Clusters of pure white flowers with a darker eye may be born throughout summer and can nearly cover the top of the plant under good conditions. White or Swamp Milkweed is one of the few shade tolerant Milkweeds but it seems to produce a fuller denser plant where it receives at least 4-6 hours or more of direct sunlight. This is an excellent choice for use as a Monarch host as it will remain evergreen in mild winters in zone 8B and warmer and is a good substitute for the Mexican Milkweed for those looking for a reliable locally native perennial Milkweed with a smaller compact habit. Asclepias perennis is native to much of the eastern central US. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist to semi-moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Plant the Aquatic or White Milkweed in spring until about midsummer in zones 6-8 to help ensure plants are well-established before winter. It can also be enjoyed as a container plant but it should be protected if there is a chance that the soil can freeze. A crown of deep sapphire blue filaments create a striking contrast with the white petals and sepals that are held against the rich green foliage throughout the growing season. The Blue Crown Passionflower is a vigorous growing tropical vine and can easily reach 20' once well-established. This is also one of the most reliably cold hardy Passionvines with foliage remaining evergreen in the mildest 8B winters but dying back to the ground in severe winters and returning readily in spring. The Blue Crown Passionflower may spread somewhat by rhizomes but it is generally much more tame than the Maypop. Cross pollination may produce tropical tasting tangy fruit that surrounds the dark seeds inside. White Woodland Aster, Calico Aster, Starved Aster, One-sided Aster

Symphyotrichum lateriflorum, Aster lateriflorus

In fall loads of dainty 1/2" wide white daisies with a pinkish-purplish 'eye' literally cover the plant for weeks and offer nectar and pollen to smaller pollinators. The White Woodland Aster or Calico Aster, Symphyotrichum lateriflorum, is a small bushy clump forming native perennial common throughout the Eastern and Central US and spilling over into Canada. It is a common component of our local Pineywoods region that adds a bolt of color beneath that of the changing foliage as well as providing a pollinator food source at a time when many plants have gone to seed for the year but native bees are still stockpiling. The White Woodland Aster is fairly tolerant of full sun to partly shaded sites and is a good choice for meadows, prairies, and roadside plantings. It may reseed on exposed soils, although it does not appear to be aggressive. Caterpillar host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly. Item# 12039
