Camellia x 'April Tryst'  

Zone 6B cold hardy! Medium sized, intense bright red, anemone form flowers with a smattering of white variegated petaloids and occasionally displaying pink filaments tipped with gold stamens. Flowers over an extended period in midseason, February to April. Camellia x 'Arctic Rose'  

Medium sized, deep rose red, perfect form flowers are produced over an extended period beginning in midseason and continues well into the late season, February-April. Arctic Rose Camellia develops into a medium to large evergreen shrub with a dense compact habit with a moderate rate of growth. Its slightly smaller mature size makes it a good choice for a low maintenance hedge or container specimen as well as an accent or specimen in the landscape. Astronaut Evergreen Azalea, Holly Springs Astronaut Azalea

Rhododendron x 'Holly Springs Astronaut'  

The out of this world very large, up to 5" across, funnel shaped flowers can range from solid salmon, to randomly flecked and streaked with salmon and pink, to white with randomly flecked with pink and are produced in late spring. Astronaut Azalea, a.k.a. Holly Springs Astronaut, is a Satsuki hybrid developing into a 3' high mound of deep green, medium textured, evergreen foliage. It lends itself to bonsai culture but is sure to be a low-maintenance conversation piece in the garden and landscape. Azaleas do best in average moist, acidic soils that are rich in organic matter but have good to excellent drainage and should be top dressed with an organic mulch such as pine straw and pine bark. Chansonette Sasanqua Camellia

Camellia hiemalis 'Chansonette'  

This award winner boasts 3" wide, brilliant pink, formal double flowers that are produced very early in the season, October to December. The flowers may show golden stamens at times. Chansonette Sasanaqua Camellia, a seedling of the famed Shi-Shi Gashira and a C. hiemalis type, is a moderately vigorous, broadly spreading, small to medium-sized evergreen shrub with a somewhat loose and open habit growing to about 4-5' high and nearly twice as wide. It has medium-textured, deep green foliage typical of most Sasanquas and should make for a colorful fall accent or informal hedge. Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions. Bright bubblegum pink 2" flowers contrast nicely with dark bronze green foliage of this dainty Azalea cultivar. Chinzan Evergreen Azalea develops into a low 2' high mound of evergreen foliage that spreads to about 3' wide. A blue flowered Sasanqua! Dark purple buds open to purplish-red the first day and change to lavender-blue the second creating a multi-colored effect on this semi-dwarf evergreen Sasanqua in fall. The blues are intensified in acid soils. Rich deep green rounded foliage on a compact rounded plant. Grey Owl Juniper

Juniperus 'Grey Owl', J. virginiana 'Grey Owl'  

Silvery gray-green foliage adorns this broadly spreading but low growing evergreen female Juniper that adorns itself with blue-gray cones each summer that are sure to attract a variety of birds and other wildlife. Grey Owl's low spreading habit and steely gray color lend it to use in the garden and landscape where it contrasts wonderfully with darker colored foliage. It also has bonsai potential. Provide a well drained soil and full to mostly sunny conditions. Dr. Michael Dirr says that this is "Among the best of the shrubby spreading junipers." in Dirr's Encyclopedia of Trees & Shrubs. Grey Owl is often sold as a cultivar of Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus virginiana, and it may very well be, but some, like Dr. Dirr, suggest that it may be a hybrid that includes the Pfitzer Juniper in its parentage. The 3 1/2" wide, ruffled, deep red funnel shaped flowers are produced in early to midspring and are somewhat reminiscent of the old favorite Red Ruffles. Katherine Allison Azalea, is an evergreen Dr. Eugene Aromi hybrid named for his granddaughter, having good vigor and with an initially upright habit eventually mounding out to about 4-5' high and wide. Developed in Mobile, Alabaman these were bred for good performance in the heat and humidity of the Southeast. Katherine Allison Azalea can be utilized as an informal hedge, specimen or anywhere else you would use a spring flowering medium-sized evergreen shrub in the garden and landscape.
