1-2'H Perennials

These perennials usually remain in the 1 to 2 feet high range under most conditions. They are still low enough for the front of perennial border, garden, and landscape and some of the rhizomatous species will make low to medium height groundcovers. Their tidy habits also lend them to use as fillers and spillers for container specimens and in combinations for small to medium sized containers. Growing conditons and how well a plant is established may affect it's ultimate size.

Spikes of soft reddish-orange, fan-shaped flowers are produced from spring to frost, or year round under warm tropical conditions, atop this upright to spreading, naturally evergreen tropical. Florida Flame Crossandra or Firecracker Flower appears to be a hybrid selection with many similarities to the red Nile Queen Crossandra, Crossandra nilotica, but it has a taller, more vigorous, somewhat more upright habit with glossy very dark green foliage. *In areas with hot summer climates Crossandras generally tend to prefer cool sunlight, like filtered or morning sun, or very late afternoon sunlight. In cooler climates they can tolerate full sun. Use Crossandras as specimen container plants, in mixed container gardens as well as in the garden and landscape. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Easy, vigorous and floriferous enough to use as a summer annual but can be grown as perennials in tropical climates. Fruit Cocktail Shrimp Plant

Justicia brandegeeana 'Fruit Cocktail'

The red to pinkish-red and white tubular flowers emerge from between the spikes of chartreuse bracts from spring to fall to year-round under warm tropical conditiosn. The Fruit Cocktail Shrimp Plant, one the newest selections of Justicia brandegeeana, has a naturally more compact, better branching habit than the typical Red Shrimp Plant but in all other regards it is nearly identical. It is quite tolerant of light conditions ranging from full sun to light shade but may have the densest habit in sunnier conditions. The flowers attract hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and other pollinators. Use Shrimp Plants to add color in containers, as a specimen plant or in mixed container gardens, as well as in the garden and landscape. Provide an average to well-drained, moderately fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Spikes of 1" blue to purple tubular flowers that are tipped with white on the lower two petals are produced over an extended period beginning in mid to late spring into late summer if moisture is adequate. Heartleaf Skullcap, Scuttelaria ovata, is a shade-loving rhizomatous groundcovering evergreen native perennial with heart-shaped foliage that emerges a purplish red to burgundy and maintains a tinge of that coloration even at maturity. This species is widely distributed throughout much of central and eastern US and extends into both Canada and northern Mexico. Heartleaf Skullcap is tolerant of dry shade once well-established which is one of the more difficult combinations for plants to thrive in. Spikes up to 16-20" high are topped by clusters of tubular blue to blue-violet flowers with a contrasting white bee-guide are produced beginning as early as late spring but mainly in summer, occasionally into fall, and attract a variety of native bees along with larger butterflies. Helmet Skullcap, Scutellaria integrifolia, is a small, 12-20" high, clump forming to short rhizomatous perennial native from East Texas, all along the Gulf Coast and up the Eastern Seaboard into southern Massachussets and New York. This is a common component of the brightly lit understory in the Pineywoods and locally we typically see it in dryer or mesic uplands including hardwood and pineforests in well-drained loamy and sandy soils as well as in more moist sunnier sites.
