2-3'H Perennials

These medium height perennials usually remain in the 2 to 3 feet high range under most conditions. Use them behind and among lower growing perennials, as specimen plants near the middle of border, in front of medium sized shrubs and other taller perennials, and around tree form plants. Many of these will make nice container specimens for medium sized containers and in combinations in large and very large containers. Growing conditions and how well a plant is established may affect your plant's ultimate size.

The dense flat-topped flower clusters are composed of numerous small, white and creamy white flowers and are produced between late spring and potentially into fall atop 24-36" high stems that attract a wide variety of mainly smaller pollinators. Common Yarrow, Achillea millefolium, is a rhizomatous, evergreen, heirloom perennial with fine textured fennel-like, rich medium green, fragrant anise-scented foliage and quickly spreads to create a seemingly weed proof groundcover. It is typically regarded as a poor choice for gardens due to its rambunctious nature but makes an easy addition to naturalistic plantings like meadows, prairies, and roadsides as well as a lawn replacement and a tough and low maintenance groundcover for difficult sites like parking lot islands, provided they have good drainage. It also makes an easy and low maintenance container plant. Provide Common Yarrow with a full to mostly sunny site in lean, mineral soils, like sandy loams, with excellent drainage. Once fully established the plants need little if any maintenance, although, it is said that deadheading the flowers will help to promote repeat flowering from the lower flower stem nodes and to help limit its spread. The large creamy white flowers emerge from loose purple-black tinged spikes and calyxes from spring to fall attracting hummingbirds and other garden beneficials. Cool Cream Salvia, a selection or hybrid of the Little Leaf or Mountain Sage, Salvia microphylla, boasts excellent vigor and flower power with flowering beginning early and continuing reliably through summer and into fall. In areas where hard freezes do not occur, The Mountain Sages may develop a shrubby semi-woody base, while in zone 8 and colder, established plants act more like herbaceous perennials dying back to near ground level and returning in early spring. Enjoy these colorful pollinator attractors in the garden and landscape or as rewarding and forgiving container specimens. Coontie Palm, Florida Arrowroot, Koonti, Wild Sago

Zamia integrifolia, Z. pumila

The stiff ferny fronds are adorned with numerous thick leathery medium to deep green leaflets often with a bronze tinge and emerge from what becomes an underground trunk. The Coontie, Zamia integrifolia (a.k.a Z. pumila), is a small tough southeastern native Cycad that eventually develops an underground trunk that will branch with age creating a dense 24-36" high cover of the soft to medium textured fronds. It is resistant to drought, tolerates high heat and humidity, sun or shade, and is a very low maintainence addition to the landscape. In areas that experience hard freezes, like zone 8, the foliage may freeze back but a new flush readily returns in spring. Makes an easy bonsai and a low maintenance container plant. Item# 12729

Dark Knight Bluebeard, Spiraea, Caryopteris

Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Dark Knight'

Dense whorls of nectar rich, purple to dark blue-purple, tubular flowers seemingly cover up the upper most portions of the plant for weeks beginning in mid to late summer and continuing into fall. Dark Knight Bluebeard, a.k.a. Black Knight, is a vigorous and easy sunloving free-flowering clump forming shrub-like perennial that quickly develops into a dense mound of fragrant and deer resistant gray-green foliage. In zones 5-6 it tends to act more like a clump forming die-back perennial and becomes more shrub-like where winters are milder although it benefits from hard late winter or early spring pruning since it flowers on new growth. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established and prefers a sunny site in a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12117

Grows To: 2-3'H x 2-3'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny

Dark Towers Penstemon, Beardtongue

Penstemon 'Dark Towers'  PP20013

Deep wine-red foliage provides a wonderful foil for the tall sturdy spikes of light pink tubular flowers in late spring and early summer attracting bees, hummingbirds, and the occassional butterfly. Dark Towers Penstemon, an offspring of Penstemon digitalis, was developed by Dale Lindgren at the University of Nebraska from his original selection of Husker Red. Dark Towers has darker foliage that keeps its color better through summer and it has pink flowers versus white on Husker Red. Provide this easy to grow clump forming perennial, a nativar (a cultivar from native species), with a moist to average moist, well-drained, fertile soil in a full to mostly sunny location for optimum vigor, flowering, and for the deepest foliage colors. Pair Dark Towers Penstemon with chartreuse foliaged plants for a wonderful contrast. Images courtesy of Ball Horticulture, Inc., all rights reserved. Item# 12469

Spikes of comparatively large, two-lipped tubular flowers are a brilliant dayglow pink with a contrasting small white throat and are produced from late spring or summer into fall attracting hummingbirds, larger bees, and occassional butterflies. Dayglow Salvia is new to the US in 2021, an Autumn Sage and Littleleaf Sage hybrid, with a long flowering habit, sturdy disposition and a naturally upright to rounded habit. This shrub-like perennial may remain evergreen in mild winter climates, like zones 9B-10, but acts like a die-back perennial where temperatures fall much below about 30oF. Perfectly suited for use as a low-maintenance container specimen or add it to a sunny garden or landscape for traffic stopping, summer-long color. A profusion of golden orange-yellow dark eyed daisies are produced in mid to late summer and into fall atop tall sturdy stems and attract a myriad of smaller pollinators and garden beneficials. Deam's Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii, is different from Goldstrum by having a clump forming habit, slightly larger flowers, and overall taller plants with better resistance to powdery mildew. Its reliability has garnered this US native perennial the coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit. Provide Deam's Black-Eyed Susan with a full to mostly sunny site in average to well-drained soils. DECADENCE® Cherries Jubilee Baptisia, False Indigo

Baptisia 'Cherries Jubilee'  PP23907 CPBR5332

"An unusually beautiful and unique flower color as well as densely branched foliage set this new variety apart. Deep maroon buds open to bicolor maroon and yellow flowers held on strong scapes above the blue-green foliage in late spring to early summer. Secondary branching on the flower stems makes this variety especially floriferous. As the flowers age, they turn gold." - Walter's Gardens, Inc. DECADENCE® Cherries Jubilee Baptisia, a hybrid cultivar of our native species (a.k.a. nativar), has a slightly more compact habit than the others in this series as well as foliage that lasts through summer. It was selected as one of the top ten in the 2012-15 Baptisia Trials at Mount Cuba Center and is reported to produce over 270 flowering stems on mature plants! These are easy and low-maintenance, deer resistant, long-lived, taprooted perennials that produce more and more flowering spikes with each passing year. Considered a must for the cutflower garden as the spikes have an excellent vase life. Double White Angel's Trumpet, Devil's Trumpet

Datura fastuosa 'Double White', D. metel

8-10" long, double, creamy white, night fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year or nearly year round when grown in a greenhouse or conservatory. The Double White Angel's Trumpet, a form of Datura metel, is often grown as an annual or short-lived shrub-like perennial and it is easy enough to save a few seed from the large capsules once they split open to grow new ones for next year. These are fast growing small to medium-sized, shrub-like, frost tender tropical plants that are easy and rewarding. Also known as Devil's Trumpet, due to the poisonous properties of this member of the Nightshade family.
