4'H or Larger Perennials

The very tallest perennials that commonly exceed 4 feet high under most conditions. These very tall, often statement making perennials are well suited to use at the back of the border and in front of medium to large shrubs and taller tree form plants. Some may be suitable for large to very large containers as specimens and thrillers. Growing conditions may affect ultimate size. This list also includes some tropicals/subtropicals that are grown as die-back perennials in zone 8B/9A like Angel's Trumpets, so just keep that in mind if you are in a colder climate.

Dancing Wind Big Bluestem, Turkey Foot Grass

Andropogon gerardii 'Dancing Wind'  PP26892

The spring and summer clumps of yellow-green foliage are accented with and tipped with red and in late summer tall, 4-1/2-5-1/2' high, sturdy spikes of decorative reddish seed heads are produced. As fall approaches the foliage becomes red and then deepens into fiery scarlet. Dancing Wind Big Bluestem, a selection of Andropogon gerardii, has a slightly shorter, sturdier upright habit than the species with excellent fall color. The species is native throughout much of the eastern 2/3's of the US and is a clumping to slowly spreading rhizomatous grass whose seeds are utilized by a number of seed eating birds. Provide a full to mostly sunny site with an average to well-drained, acidic soil for the deepest foliage colors and optimum vigor. Plants are in their best form when grown in a low fertility soil. Known for its intense Honeysuckle-like fragrance that is most pronounced in the evening, Daniel Weeks Ginger produces large dense spikes of of large butterfly-like flowers that are a light creamy orange at the edges deepening to dark golden-orange in the center.  This is a vigorous clump forming ginger with sturdy upright stems adorned with tropical foliage that starts flowering in late spring to early summer and can continue until fall. Its compact clump forming upright habit and excellent flower power lend this hybrid Hedychium to use in containers as well as in the garden and landscape. Tall spikes of soft to medium orange flowers sit atop sturdy upright stems and are produced over a long period in summer on well-established plantings. This ginger's sweetly fragrant flowers attract larger butterflies like Swallowtails and Giant Sulphurs. The Disney form of the Scarlet Ginger is one of the more compact and erect growing forms of this species. Disney is also known as the Honduras Form and as the Orange Brush Ginger.  is a naturally evergreen, rhizomatous and slowly spreading, tropical that acts like a root hardy, die-back perennial in areas where freezes occur. It multiplies readily but not invasively. Makes a good cut flower and is resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits. The Hedychium Gingers typically need the equivalent of about 4-6 hours of cool sunlight in a moist to average moist, rich fertile soil with average or better drainage for optimum vigor and flowering. Fragrant peachy orange butterfly-shaped lightly fragrant flowers are produced in large spikes in summer atop tall sturdy stems adorned with heavily variegated white and green tropical looking foliage. Dr. Moy Improved is, as the name would imply, an improved selection of 'Dr Moy', which was one of if not the first variegated Hedychiums available, with heavier streaks and splashes of clean white variegation that contrasts wonderfully with the deep green portions of the foliage. Large spikes of fragrant, sunny yellow butterfly-shaped flowers are accented with a deep golden blotch all on a moderately vigorous plant with rich green foliage. Enrei Ginger, a Hedychium hybrid, was originally shared with Glasshouse Works by horticulturist Jack Craig. The fragrant showy flowers should attract larger butterflies and maybe even the hummingbird-like pollinating Sphinx moths. Golden Sunset® Yellow Indiangrass

Sorghastrum nutans 'MNYG318153'  PP33776

The tall dense spikes of golden yellow flowers and seedheads are held well above the fountaining clump of wide olive green foliage on sturdy 6' high stems beginning in early August and are showy throughout winter. Golden Sunset® Yellow Indiangrass, a University of Minnesota selection of Sorghastrum nutans,  was selected for its early flowering, sturdy stems that do not fall over or lodge and last through winter, as well as for its reliable zone 3 cold hardiness. it has received high marks in trials and has been in development for about 15 years. This is a wonderful refinement for this showy native grass making it a useful addition to both formal and informal garden and landscape settings. The seed heads provide fodder for songbirds and other wildlife and the foliage is utilized by the Pepper-and-Salt Skipper butterfly as a caterpillar host plant. Provide a full to mostly sunny site optimally in a well-drained loamy soil with average moisture but the plants are fairly adaptable to soil types and are drought resistant once fully established.
