4'H or Larger Perennials

The very tallest perennials that commonly exceed 4 feet high under most conditions. These very tall, often statement making perennials are well suited to use at the back of the border and in front of medium to large shrubs and taller tree form plants. Some may be suitable for large to very large containers as specimens and thrillers. Growing conditions may affect ultimate size. This list also includes some tropicals/subtropicals that are grown as die-back perennials in zone 8B/9A like Angel's Trumpets, so just keep that in mind if you are in a colder climate.

Beginning in mid to late summer and continuing until the first frost, billowy clusters composed of hundreds of nearly 1" wide white daisies with a prominent yellow eye are produced atop tall stems attracting a bevy of bees and butterflies. White Boltonia, Boltonia asteroides, is a tall, stoloniferous, herbaceous perennial native mainly to the central US along the Mississippi River valley but there are also populations on the east and west coasts. It will do best in an average moist to moist soil and can tolerate both periodic drought and flooding once fully established, although, it seems to do best in a moist, well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny location. Plants in too much shade or in overly fertile soils may flop and a late spring to early summer pruning can help to promote bushier sturdier plants if this is an issue. White Boltonia's height lend it to use in naturalistic settings or near the back of the border. Images courtesy of North Creek Nurseries, Inc., all rights reserved. Item# 13174

Grows To: 4-6'H x 2-4'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade

Clusters of pure-white, butterfly-shaped, fragrant flowers are produced in clusters in summer atop the tropical looking, rich green foliage and sturdy lush stems attracting both butterflies and the hummingbird-like Sphinx Moths. Cut the flowers and put them in a vase and they can perfume an entire room with their sweet heady fragrance. The White Butterfly Ginger, Hedychium coronarium, is a rhizomatous and slowly spreading, naturally evergreen tropical that acts like a die-back perennial in areas where freezes occur, reliably returning in zones 7B to 10. The Hedychium Gingers typically grow and flower best where they receive at least some direct sunlight for 3-4 hours during the day and generally have the best looking foliage where they receive shade during the heat of the day. A planting on the east facing side of a house, tree or other structure where they receive morning sun is often optimum. Provide an average moist to moist, average to well-drained, moderately fertile soil to keep this easy and reliable heirloom growing and flowering. Item# 1065
