The fountaining clumps of large, dark burgundy to near black, 1"+ wide, sword shaped foliage makes an outstanding accent or backdrop for smaller growing perennials in the summer and fall garden and landscape. First Knight™ Hybrid Purple Fountain Grass, a trispecific seed sterile hybrid Pennisetum, was developed and selected for its exceptionally dark foliage color, vigor, disease resistance, and zone 8 cold hardiness. In areas with mild winters, the plants produce tall fuzzy spikes in late summer and fall adding to its interest. We have a similar selection growing at the back of one of our beds and have always been impressed with the statement it makes each year. We have even been known to utilize the foliage and occasional seed heads in cut flower arrangements. This is a vigorous and easy growing, low maintenance addition to the garden and landscape and it is vigorous enough to be used as an annual outside of its hardiness zones. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a fertile, average moist, soil with average or better drainage. Item# 12853

Spikes of soft reddish-orange, fan-shaped flowers are produced from spring to frost, or year round under warm tropical conditions, atop this upright to spreading, naturally evergreen tropical. Florida Flame Crossandra or Firecracker Flower appears to be a hybrid selection with many similarities to the red Nile Queen Crossandra, Crossandra nilotica, but it has a taller, more vigorous, somewhat more upright habit with glossy very dark green foliage. *In areas with hot summer climates Crossandras generally tend to prefer cool sunlight, like filtered or morning sun, or very late afternoon sunlight. In cooler climates they can tolerate full sun. Use Crossandras as specimen container plants, in mixed container gardens as well as in the garden and landscape. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Easy, vigorous and floriferous enough to use as a summer annual but can be grown as perennials in tropical climates. They can also be overwintered as container plants where not hardy. Item# 12835

Gold Crest Bluebeard, Spiraea, Caryopteris

Caryopteris x 'Gold Crest' PP32310

You can grow this award winning Bluebeard for its foliage alone! The new bright yellow spring foliage retains its color throughout the growing season even in the hot and humid south. In late summer and fall, dense whorled clusters of deep violet-blue, nectar rich, tubular flowers are held above and among the wonderfully contrasting foliage. Gold Crest Bluebeard, a Caryopteris hybrid, was selected for its heat tolerant brilliant foliage, for its dense compact habit, and its pollinator attracting flowers. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established and prefers a sunny site in a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Won Best Pollinator Friendly Perennial for the Southeast in 2019 at the UGA Trial Gardens and was rated above a 4.5 out 5 at both Penn State(2021) and Mississippi State(2020) trial gardens as 2nd year perennials!
