Tropical Plants

The tall dense flower spikes are composed of deep coral orange tubular buds that change through coral and finally mature to white creating a wonderful contrast. The spikes are held on sturdy 3-4' high stems well above the mound of gray green arching to upright foliage over an exceptionally long period in summer and potentially into fall attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators. High Roller Kniphofia or Red Hot Poker is a repeat flowering exceptionally cold hardy, clump forming, naturally evergreen selection of this heat and drought tolerant perennial. Enjoy it as part of the border, as part of a low maintenance garden and landscape or as a container specimen. The large rounded, almost bottlebrush-like spikes, up to 6" long and 3" in diameter, are composed of bright golden orange to apricot tubular flowers that curl around curiously at their tips are produced nearly year-round attracting both hummingbirds and bees. Honey Gem Grevillea is a vigorous, well-branched, medium to large, heat and sunloving, evergreen shrub that is cloaked in fine-textured, deeply cut, grayish green foliage. Use it as a specimen plant or informal screen or hedge. Grevillea are normally somewhat xeric but have proven to be wonderfully tolerant of high humidity and average moist soils and will need little supplemental water once well-established in the garden or landscape. Honey Gem Grevillea can be maintained as an easy, low-maintenance and forgiving container specimen that can be overwintered indoors where not hardy. Can also be utilized as cut flowers. Item# 12642

1" long tubular red to deep pinkish red flowers tipped in yellow are produced from spring to frost on low compact plants whose semi-trailing stems seem to be weighed down by the profusion of flowers. A sterile exceptionally free flowering Lantana with a compact well-branched habit and improved vigor over similar cultivars that has received high marks in trials across the US. Considered by many to be one of the most fragrant Passionvines with a strong gardenia-like perfume emanating from the 2" white flowers that have a purple stripe centered on the frilly corona. May produce delicious passionfruit under good conditions and with cross-pollination. The beautiful silvery-green delicate trilobed foliage makes it a great contrast for darker colored trellises and backdrops. A vigorous growing vine that is adaptive to containers as well. One of the daintiest of Hoyas with small olive green foliage and produces 1-2" clusters of tiny brick red flowers with pink centers. The foliage can vary from being heart-shaped to simple. When grown in full sun the leaves typically develop red margins. Grow in hanging baskets or on a small trellis. Item# 3090.

Hanging clusters of small individual flowers are centered by waxy yellow, star-shaped coronas with a creamy white to pink tinged halo and recurving fuzzy corollas are produced during the growing season. Hoya obscura is one of the more vigorous and easier to grow vining waxflowers that is well-suited to hanging basket culture or give it a trellis or other support for its twining vines to climb. The major leaf veins are fairly prominent in this species even from the upperside of the medium green foliage and under cool direct sunlight the foliage can become more olive green and may even take on red tones. To some the flowers have a light fragrance and it may be most noticeable at night or very early in the day. The mother plant was sold to us as Hoya pusilla, and we thank Rachel for pointing this out for us, so if you have purchased that species from us it is H. obscura. Item# 12367

Rich pink 2" tubular flowers emerge from the dark colored bracts of this free flowering tropical perennial from late spring to fall. Award winning flower power! Tall dense spikes of fuchsia to red foxglove flowers with contrasting orange, pale yellow, to cream colored throats that are overlaid with dark flecking and are produced from mid to late spring until fall attracting hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. Illumination™ Flame Digiplexis was the first of these now highly popular cross-generic hybrids between the tropical Canary Island Isoplexis (now classified as a Digitalis) and Digitalis purpurea producing a vigorous exceptionally free flowering hybrid. Imperial Blue Plumbago produces large clusters of deep sky blue flowers from early summer until fall. Plumbago is a heat, sun, and drought tolerant tropical or tender perennial that makes a great addition to container gardens or it is often found growing as a groundcover, hedge, tree form, and espaliered on fences in mild winter climates. The dense crown of dark purple filaments are held against a wonderfully contrasting foil of white to pale lavender petals and sepals on the 3-4" wide wonderfully fragrant flowers. Indigo Dream Passionflower, a Patrick Worley and Rick McCain hybrid with Incense in its parentage, is a moderately vigorous, naturally evergreen tropical vine that clings to supports via tendrils and makes an easy summer climber for medium to large trellises, arbors, or allow it to trail along a fence. It is considered to be root hardy into zone 9 and may remain evergreen in mild winter climates. Where not hardy it may be enjoyed as a container plant and overwintered in a sunny window. Item# 12772

2-3" long, deep purple, slightly flaring tubular flowers are produced in large hanging clusters designed for hummingbird pollination. One of the darkest Iochromas, Indigo is a prolific flowering selection on a vigorous growing upright to spreading, naturally evergreen tropical shrub. This miniature cousin of the Angel's Trumpet is easily enjoyed as a container plant where not hardy. Provide good drainage and fertile, average moist soil in partial to filtered sun for the best results. The arrowhead shaped mainly solid colored foliage lights up with dark copper, red, orange, yellow, pink, and some green shades and can deepen to near purple in late summer, fall, and winter. Inferno Copper Plant has a naturally rounded habit on a compact well-branched plant growing to about 3' high and 3' wide making it a choice tropical for a medium-sized, heat and sunloving, low-maintenance container specimen or add it to the garden and landscape as an annual for a spring to frost show. In full to mostly sunny sites the foliage tends to be darkest and richest in copper, red, and orange shade and in shadier sites it may lean more toward the pastel lighter colors including green.
