Tropical Plants

Upward facing strongly fragrant, up to 2" wide, creamy white, pinwheel-like flowers are held on 4-6" long slender tubes and quickly change to golden yellow and then to pumpkin orange. Rich deep green glossy foliage on a vigorous growing evergreen shrub but is certainly amenable to light pruning and shaping. This rare tropical Gardenia is sure to be a conversation piece. 10" golden yellow flowers that resemble a lotus when first opening, sit atop nearly leafless thick sturdy stems and last for months on mature plants. When young the plants look just like dwarf bananas with long rounded medium-green tropical foliage. This is tough, hardy, and easily grown, tightly clump forming rhizomatous tropical. After flowering is finished the mature plant produces a multitude of pups and then dies making way for the young plants which should flower in their 2nd or 3rd year. Our 1 gallon plants are 30"+H. 3-4" high fuzzy yellow spikes of tubular flowers are borne throughout the year on this easily grown tropical. Golden Plume is very similar to most Justicias in form and habit. The wide dark green foliage makes a nice foil for the spikes of yellow flowers. Item# 9684.

The fine dark green linear foliage is tipped with a slightly larger rounded pad and adorns fine trailing to twining stems. The Grass-Leaved Hoya, Hoya retusa, produces white waxy flowers that are centered by a nicely contrasting deep burgundy 'eye' in spring and on and off during the growing season on mature plants. The flowers are born singly and in small clusters. This unusual Hoya hails from India and its fine stems lend it to use as a hanging basket specimen, allow it to spill from containers like the 'head' pots as wild looking hair, and it can be used as a groundcover below larger plants that require similar conditions as long as there is ample bright light to keep it growing and healthy. Like most Hoyas, allow the soil to become semi-dry between waterings although this species can tolerate a little more moisture than most. Item# 12294

Bright creamy white and bluish green variegated foliage adorn the trailing stems and act as a contrasting foil for the royal purple, saucer shaped flowers that are produced throughout the growing season and may be followed by decorative bright red berries. The foliage alone makes it worth growing as a specimen plant or use it as a bright spiller or thrilling groundcover beneath larger plants. Large panicles, 12-18" in height, are composed of the deepest royal blue, 1" long, nectar-rich, tubular, two-lipped flowers that are produced from late spring or early summer until fall. Guatemalan Leaf Sage, Salvia cacaliifolia, develops into a mound of deep green, fragrant, triangular and somewhat sticky foliage and is considered to be hardy into zone 8 as a die-back perennial. This interesting flower-power filled Salvia has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its adaptability and reliability. It is also highly popular with hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and bees. In areas with cooler summers Guatemalan Leaf Sage can tolerate full sun in other regions it will prefer, like the rest of us, a little shade during the heat of the day. Item# 11917

3-5" wide primrose yellow flowers with a burgundy eye that quickly fade to orange and near red are produced in summer on this vigorous large shrub to small tree-like Hibiscus with glossy rounded foliage. The Hamabo Hibiscus is an unusual species from China that is salt tolerant and provides beautiful fall colors ranging from yellows to near reds before dropping its deciduous foliage for the winter. In zone 8, plant young plants out early in the growing season so that they will be reliably hardy for their first winter. Considered by many to be one of the best Bottlebrush cultivars, Hannah Ray is a vigorous growing selection whose large deep orange-red flowers hang from weeping stems. The new growth is bronze and develops into a soft blue green. An excellent choice anywhere a small evergreen tree or large shrub is desired. Hannah Ray is drought resistant and the nectar and pollen laden flowers are sure to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Arching loose spikes of dangling red, orange-red, coral, to pale yellow 1" long tubular flowers, occassionally tipped with a ring of contrasting pale yellow, are born over an extended period in summer on this durable perennial. The flowers of the Hardy Gloxinia, Sinningia sellovii, may be produced nearly year round under warm frost free conditions. This truly hardy Gloxinia is a hummingbird magnet that attracts a variety of bees and butterflies as well! Velvety, rich green, quilted foliage adorns the upright to arching stems of this hardy perennial that grows from a large fuzzy potato-like corm. Provide excellent drainage and moderate amounts of sunlight for the best results, *Note: full sun seems to produce the most continuous display flowers. Mulch in winter to protect the corm from freeze damage.
