Large clusters of 1" wide starry golden yellow flowers with anthers that age to a contrasting red may be produced throughout the year under warm tropical conditions. The flowers attract bees and butterflies and if pollinated they are followed by 3/4-1" wide helicopter-like samaras. Maiden's Jealousy, Tristellateia australasiae, is a naturally evergreen tropical twining woody climber with rich green foliage and purplish stems on the growth. It can be grown in the ground in areas with mild winters and can also be grown as a container plant where not hardy. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum flowering. Maiden's Jealousy should be fairly tolerant of soil types as it is a component of Mangrove swamps and coastal forests in Tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia. Item# 12026

Manacá, Lady of the Night

Brunfelsia uniflora, B. manaca, B. hopeana, Franciscea uniflora

Small clusters of 2" wide white fragrant flowers open at the end of long slender tubes release their fragrance mainly at night with some fragrance maintained throughout the day as well. Peak flowering is generally in spring and summer with some flowers produced year round under warm tropical conditions. Manacá, Brunfelsia uniflora, is considered to be the most importnat Brunfelsia species used by South American shaman's and medicine men with a wide variety of uses from poison arrows, to 'dream walks', as an aphrodesiac, as well as a medicine to treat a variety of illnesses (we cannot recommend the use of this plant in any form as it can be potentially deadly). This is a naturally evergreen medium to large tropical shrub that may be planted in the garden and landscape where hardy or use it as a container plant that is overwintered indoors elsewhere. Remember how Elephant Ears were considered invasive, guess what this one is not! From the Royal Hawaiian series of Colocasias comes Maui Gold, a tightly clump forming, cold hardy perennial with a great tropical effect in the garden or in containers. The large 3'+, almost heart-shaped, tropical foliage of Maui Gold is a bright chartreuse green that sits atop sometimes purple tinged green stems. Prefers moist soils. Item# 10546.

Maui Sunrise Giant Elephant Ears

Colocasia 'Maui Sunrise' PPAF

The large deep green glossy heart-shaped foliage is centered by broad bold bands of white and yellow variegation that follows the veining pattern on younger leaves and narrows to along the main central vein at maturity. Maui Sunrise Giant Elephant Ears, which is reminiscent of White Lava, is one of the newest additions to the tightly clump-forming Royal Hawaiian Colocasia series. Unlike the old varieties, these newer hybrids do not run! An unusual color form of this popular butterfly and hummingbird magnet, Mawmaw's Magenta Porterweed produces tall spikes of red-purple colored flowers from spring to fall on well branched vigorous plants. This is a color sport or seedling of Coral Porterweed discovered by the good people at Allen Acres and it is named in honor of Susan Allen, better known as Mawmaw to her grandchildren. Porterweeds make excellent additions to pollinator gardens where their nectar rich flowers and exceptional flower power attract pollinators throughout the growing season. This newly introduced variety of Yellow Bells was selected for earlier and more consistent flowering habits. The large golden yellow trumpets are born in loose clusters from summer to fall on this woody perennial. Occasional deadheading promotes more blooms, though it is not required. Large clusters of fiery orange-red tubular flowers are produced from summer through fall to yearround in warm tropical climates and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Clusters of shiny black 3/8" fruit develop on pollinated flowers and are utilized by songbirds. When grown in full to mostly sunny conditions the foliage generally has a reddish tinge. The Firebush, Hamelia patens var. patens, is native to the southern half of Florida and is evergreen under frost free conditions and can develop into a medium to large shrub. *We have grown this species in our zone 8B gardens for over 30 years as a quite reliable 3-4' high die-back perennial. Each winter it freezes back to its crown and then returns in mid to late spring to flower through much of summer and into fall. Mexican Plume, Mexican Shrimp Plant, Orange Shrimp Plant

Orange to yellow tubular flowers emerge from spikes of red bracts atop compact plants from spring to fall to year round under warm tropical conditions. The Mexican Plume or Orange Shrimp Plant, Justicia fulvicoma, is a dense and lower growing Shrimp Plant with a more compact growing habit than the Red Shrimp Plant, Justicia brandegeeana, reaching about 24" high. It is quite tolerant of light conditions ranging from full sun to light shade but may have the densest habit in sunnier conditions. The flowers attract hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and other pollinators. Use the Mexican Plume to add color in containers, as a specimen or in mixed container gardens, as well as in the garden and landscape. Provide an average to well-drained, moderately fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. The Mojito Elephant Ear is a rhizomatous tropical perennial in zones 8-10 but is vigorous enough to enjoy as a summer annual in northerly climates. Elephant Ears can be grown in moist to wet fertile soils and can be lightly submerged in water gardens as well as in medium to large containers.
