Evan's Yellow Amaryllis

Hippeastrum evansiae, Amaryllis evansiae, H. anzaldoi, A. anzaldoi

The starry soft primrose yellow, wavy edged flowers are centered by a deeper yellow star shaped throat that is tinged with orange at its edges and are produced in clusters of 3-4 atop light green sturdy stems in late winter to early spring. Evan's Yellow Amaryllis, Hippeastrum evansiae, is a rare and endangered Bolivian Amaryllis species that readily produces offsets at the tips of the fleshy roots during winter dormancy. It is from a relatively dry region and does best in soils with excellent drainage and will prefer a dry winter rest period of 6-8 weeks prior to flowering. Evan's Yellow Amaryllis is considered to be one of the smallest Hippeastrum species and is a naturally deciduous tropical species. It is reported to be hardy into zone 9B, although, it is possible it will withstand colder regions but we have not yet tried it in the ground. Grown from offsets of our parent plants and are planted one flowering-size bulb per 4.5" pot. Item# 12278

Fashion™ Cherry Salvia, Sage

Salvia 'Fashion™ Cherry' PPAF?

Large, 2" long, bright cherry red, tubular flowers emerge from whorls of burgundy tipped yellow-green calyxes from spring to frost on a semi-compact plant with deep green foliage. Fashion™ Cherry Salvia is similar to the Wish series of Tropical Salvias but has a slightly more compact habit reaching about 30"x30" by the end of summer. It makes an easy, heat and sunloving specimen plant or it can be used in mixed company, as well as providing spring to fall color in the garden and landscape. This Salvia is also daylength neutral and so can flower year-round under warm frost free conditions. The Firecracker Bush, Bouvardia ternifolia, is a naturally small upright to rounded subtropical shrub native to the US desert southwest and Mexico. Its desert roots makes this an easy and forgiving container plant as well as an excellent addition to the garden and landscape. Provide the Firecracker Bush with a well-drained soil in a fertile, average moist soil in part shade to bright shade for optimum vigor and flowering. The fountaining clumps of large, dark burgundy to near black, 1"+ wide, sword shaped foliage makes an outstanding accent or backdrop for smaller growing perennials in the summer and fall garden and landscape. First Knight™ Hybrid Purple Fountain Grass, a trispecific seed sterile hybrid Pennisetum, was developed and selected for its exceptionally dark foliage color, vigor, disease resistance, and zone 8 cold hardiness. In areas with mild winters, the plants produce tall fuzzy spikes in late summer and fall adding to its interest. We have a similar selection growing at the back of one of our beds and have always been impressed with the statement it makes each year. Spikes of soft reddish-orange, fan-shaped flowers are produced from spring to frost, or year round under warm tropical conditions, atop this upright to spreading, naturally evergreen tropical. Florida Flame Crossandra or Firecracker Flower appears to be a hybrid selection with many similarities to the red Nile Queen Crossandra, Crossandra nilotica, but it has a taller, more vigorous, somewhat more upright habit with glossy very dark green foliage. *In areas with hot summer climates Crossandras generally tend to prefer cool sunlight, like filtered or morning sun, or very late afternoon sunlight. In cooler climates they can tolerate full sun. Use Crossandras as specimen container plants, in mixed container gardens as well as in the garden and landscape. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Easy, vigorous and floriferous enough to use as a summer annual but can be grown as perennials in tropical climates. White petals alternate with lavender sepals that are topped by a wide corona of frilly white filaments that darken to purple. Frederick Passion Fruit is self-pollinating and the flowers are followed by large purple fruit with a sweet tangy flavor once fully ripe that can be eaten fresh or juiced. This is also considered to be one of the most reliably cold hardy Passionfruit varieties surviving well into zone 9. A vigorous dense and free flowering selection. The showy and long-lasting deep red pine-cone like flower heads are produced throughout the growing season and may be produced throughout the year under warm tropical conditions. French Kiss is a selection of the Red Buttons Ginger with a free flowering habit that lends it to use en mass in a partly shaded garden or landscape or as a low maintenance specimen plant for containers. Orange and yellow individual flowers emerge singly or a few at the time from between the showy red bracts that make up the flower heads. Medium green rounded foliage. The flowers of this compact ginger attract hummingbirds and make an easy long-lasting cut flower. The red to pinkish-red and white tubular flowers emerge from between the spikes of chartreuse bracts from spring to fall to year-round under warm tropical conditiosn. The Fruit Cocktail Shrimp Plant, one the newest selections of Justicia brandegeeana, has a naturally more compact, better branching habit than the typical Red Shrimp Plant but in all other regards it is nearly identical. It is quite tolerant of light conditions ranging from full sun to light shade but may have the densest habit in sunnier conditions. The flowers attract hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and other pollinators. Use Shrimp Plants to add color in containers, as a specimen plant or in mixed container gardens, as well as in the garden and landscape. Provide an average to well-drained, moderately fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering.
