Drought Resistant Plants

Schinz's Carrion Flower, Starfish Flower, Starfish Cactus

Stapelia schinzii var. angolensis, Ceropegia schinzii var. angolensis, Gonostemon schinzii var. angolensis

The thick, smooth, succulent, upright to trailing stems are rounded to 4-angled and tend to be green and purple when grown in high indirect light but become burgundy under full sun conditions. In summer Schinz's Carrion Flower produces 3-5" wide burgundy to brownish yellow starfish-shaped flowers that have a fringe of purple to burgundy club-shaped hairs dangling from the edges of the petals and tremor at the slightest breeze attracting insects for pollination. Like the larger growing Starfish Cactus, the flowers produce a light scent of rotting meat to attract their main pollinators - flies. This is an easy to grow succulent that will readily multiply into a dense mass of short upright stems and where allowed to trail the stems can grow to exceed 18" long. Provide full sun to bright indirect sunlight in a very well-draining, cactus-like soil for optimum vigor, health and flowering. Makes an easy windowsill, porch, or patio plant whose unusual flowers are sure to be a conversation piece. It can tolerate slightly more moisture when in active growth but should still be allowed to become moderately dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter, especially if grown under cool conditions. These are well-established young plants with multiple plants per pot. Item# 12633

Screamin' Yellow Wild Indigo, Yellow False Indigo, Baptisia

Baptisia sphaerocarpa 'Screamin' Yellow'

The top performer in Baptisia trials at Mt. Cuba Center where they report the plants produced upwards of 350 flower spikes per plant! Dense spikes of bright yellow pea-shaped flowers are produced above the neat mounds of bluish green foliage in mid to late spring attracting bees and other garden beneficials. Screamin' Yellow Wild or False Indigo, is an award winning selection of the native Baptisia sphaerocarpa, scoring a perfect 5 of 5 stars in the Mt. Cuba Center's 2012-15 Baptisia Trials of 46 cultivars. It sports a neat, compact, rounded to mounding habit and amazing flower power on a long-lived, clump forming, taprooted herbaceous perennial. Baptisias are durable, pest and disease resistant natives that are equally suitable for the garden or landscape as well as for additions to more naturalized settings like meadows, prairies, and roadside plantings. Baptisias, considered to be the Lupine of the South, are somewhat drought resistant once fully established but generally prefer an average moist, well-drained soil and are adaptable to soil types. Semmes' Hardy Bottlebrush

Callistemon citrinus 'Semmes Hardy'

Large deep red bottlebrush-like flowers are produced at the ends of the arching stems in spring and sporadically through summer on large established plants. Semmes' Hardy Bottlebrush was selected as much for its cold hardiness (large well-established plants have increased cold hardiness over young tender plants) as for its habit and flowering potential. Bronze tinged new growth follows the flush of spring flowers that are sure to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other garden beneficials. Semmes' Hardy Bottlebrush has a naturally compact and rounded 4-5' x 4-5' habit with somewhat arching evergreen branches. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Scarlet red, 1/2-3/4" long, tart, cherry-like fruit are produced in abundance during late spring on a vigorous, pest and disease resistant deciduous fountaining shrub. The Goumi Berry is exceptionally high in vitamin C and can be enjoyed fresh or made into a jelly that is, in our opinion, as good or better than Mayhaw jelly. It can also be made into pie filling. Seeds are edible, but have an unpleasant texture. Adding a bit of almond extract to processed or deseeded pulp leaves you with an amazing cherry flavor for desserts and preserves.  This selection was shared with us many years ago by plantsman Sherwood Aikens of Minden, Louisiana and our plants have been productive for over 30 years with practically no maintenance. One of the few plants with a symbiotic nitrogen fixating bacteria relationship that is not a Legume. Easy and reliable. Item# 444

Snow Queen Oakleaf Hydrangea

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Flemygea'

Large conical white flower clusters composed of numerous sterile florets are held atop strong sturdy stems with the flower show beginning in late spring to early summer. Flowers take on pink tones as they age. Snow Queen Oakleaf Hydrangea has sturdier stems than Alice with a more compact, denser, naturally rounded habit. This is a selection of our native Hydrangea quercifolia that offers the showy peeling cinnamon colored winter bark and purple, red and burgundy fall foliage typical of the species. Snow Queen has proven to be hardy into zone 5. Provide a well-drained, average moist, fertile, acidic soil and although they are tolerant of full sun they flower well even in fairly dense shade. The Oakleaf Hydrangea will have the most intense fall foliage coloration where the plants receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. An organic mulch, especially important under full sun conditions in areas with hot summer climates, will to help alleviate moisture stress during dry periods among its numerous other benefits. Item# 12577

Snow-N-Summer™ Asiatic Jasmine, Japanese Star Jasmine

Trachelospermum asiaticum 'HOSNS' (a.k.a. Snow-N-Summer)

Bright rosy pink to rosy red new growth matures to bright white and green creating a yearround splash of color in the garden, landscape, and even as a spiller for containers and over retaining walls. Snow-N-Summer™ Asiatic Jasmine, a wonderfully colorful selection of Trachelospermum asiaticum, creates a tough and easy, evergreen groundcover that has the ability to thrive even under trying conditions. This 6-12" high groundcover to small twining vine can produce creamy yellow fragrant flowers similar to Confederate or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, when grown as a vine or when allowed to trail from hanging baskets and over retaining walls, though it is generally infrequent and is the exception rather than the rule. Few plants can compete with the disposition of this dense groundcover once it is fully established in the landscape making it an easy and reliable choice for landscapers and tough to garden in areas, like beneath trees, where few other plants can thrive or in parking lot islands. It is heat loving, both sun and shade tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and has few pest or disease issues particularly when grown in soil with average or better drainage. For the best and brightest foliage coloration some direct sunlight during the day is beneficial and the more the better. Probably best suited to zones 8 and warmer for inground plantings but it can be used as a groundcover in containers beneath larger plants. item# 1188

Grows To: 6-8"H and spreading, space plants about 9-12" apart

Tall spikes of sunny yellow, pea-shaped, bee-pollinated flowers that age to orange with a purplish tinge are produced beginning in mid to late spring with the show lasting for weeks that is aided by the production of secondary flowering shoots. Solar Flare Prairieblues™ Baptisia or False Indigo is a hardy clump-forming taprooted perennial that emerges in early spring with purplish young foliage and stems that slowly matures to the typical light gray green. Baptisias could be considered the Lupine of the South and each will produce more and more flowering stems eventually devoloping into a dense rounded mound of foliage and flowers. Stapelia schinzii var. angolensis, Ceropegia schinzii var. angolensis, Gonostemon schinzii var. angolensis
