Midnight Oil Eastern Beebalm

Monarda bradburiana 'Midnight Oil'  PPAF

The deep maroon foliage provides a contrasting foil for the ball-like clusters of 2" long, tubular light pink flowers whose nectar and pollen attract a variety of pollinators like hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and long-tongued bees. Midnight Oil Eastern Beebalm, a selection of Monarda bradburiana, is a many stemmed, clump-forming to slowly spreading, upright growing, native, herbaceous perennial selected for its unique, dark and mysterious foliage. This species is noted for its earlier flowering, excellent disease resistance, a naturally shorter 18-24" high habit, drought resistance as compared to other species of Monarda, and tolerance for thinner, poorer, and/or gravelly soils. Plants may lose foliage when drought stressed so average moisture is generally preferred under garden conditions. Pink Skyrocket Foam Flower, Tiarella

Tiarella 'Pink Skyrocket'  PP13382, EU13697

This wonderful low groundcover produces dense cone-shaped, upright flower spikes with red stems in mid to late spring, with some flowering later in the season, and are composed of tiny ball-shaped shrimp-pink buds that open to display the tiny white flowers. The flowers are held just above the palmate bluish-green to green foliage with each lobe displaying a black to burgundy main vein. In fall and under shade, the foliage becomes a deep shiny black and in sunnier sites it takes on deep bronze tones. Pink Skyrocket Foam Flower is an easy and rewarding low, stoloniferous (think Strawberry plants), semi-evergreen groundcover that is shade tolerant and will likely need shade in areas with hot summer climates. They will prefer a moist soil with ample organic matter and average or better drainage. The flowers are reported to be fragrant and are likely pollinated by smaller bees. Dr. Allen Armitage in his Herbaceous Perennial Plants, 4th Edition states that he "puts these plants on the A list for shady areas." Schinz's Carrion Flower, Starfish Flower, Starfish Cactus

Stapelia schinzii var. angolensis, Ceropegia schinzii var. angolensis, Gonostemon schinzii var. angolensis

The thick, smooth, succulent, upright to trailing stems are rounded to 4-angled and tend to be green and purple when grown in high indirect light but become burgundy under full sun conditions. In summer Schinz's Carrion Flower produces 3-5" wide burgundy to brownish yellow starfish-shaped flowers that have a fringe of purple to burgundy club-shaped hairs dangling from the edges of the petals and tremor at the slightest breeze attracting insects for pollination. Like the larger growing Starfish Cactus, the flowers produce a light scent of rotting meat to attract their main pollinators - flies. This is an easy to grow succulent that will readily multiply into a dense mass of short upright stems and where allowed to trail the stems can grow to exceed 18" long. Provide full sun to bright indirect sunlight in a very well-draining, cactus-like soil for optimum vigor, health and flowering. Makes an easy windowsill, porch, or patio plant whose unusual flowers are sure to be a conversation piece. It can tolerate slightly more moisture when in active growth but should still be allowed to become moderately dry between waterings.
