2-3" long, light bluish purple to purple fading to light blue, slightly flaring, tubular flowers are produced in large hanging clusters throughout the growing season, to potentially year-round under warm tropical conditions, and are designed for hummingbird pollination, but may attract bees and butterflies as well. Sky King Iochroma, a selection of Iochroma cyaneum, is a naturally evergreen, loosely branching, tropical shrub with an upright to spreading habit typically growing to about 4-6' high and 2-3' wide. This miniature cousin of the Angel's Trumpet is easily enjoyed as a container plant where not hardy. Site in full sun to partial shade in a fertile, average to well-drained, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Physostegia virginiana ssp. praemorsa

Dense spikes of rosy pink tubular flowers are produced in late summer and fall atop sturdy stems attracting butterflies, larger bees, and hummingbirds. The Southern Fall Obedient Plant, Physostegia virginiana ssp. praemorsa, is a clump forming species of Physostegia, whereas most species spread via long rhizomes, this one is a much more mannerly native perennial better suited to garden culture. It will slowly multiply developing into a dense clump of foliage and flowering stems. Sport of Sports Hibiscus, Yellow El Capitolio Hibiscus, Poodle Hibiscus

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Sport of Sports', H. rosa-sinensis 'Yellow El Capitolio'

 The large yellow flowers of this unusual Hibiscus are centered with a deep red star from which emerges a long pistil that ends in a fluff of flower petals like a pom-pom. This is a rare form of the El Capitolio Hibiscus and like its parent it is a vigorous, free flowering plant. The El Capitolio Hibiscus' have the potential to flower throughout the year under good conditions and with enough warmth and sunlight.The large flowers often have a streak of white and may even revert to single Hibiscus flowers during the short days of winter. Their unique form, flower size, vigor, and flower power all make the El Capitolio Hibiscus types some of our favorites for large tropical specimens. Whorls of curving, tubular, yellow to cream flowers, commonly with purple dots, are held above the whorls of colorful bracts ranging from cream, to pink, to purple tones are produced in late spring and summer with the colorful bracts providing interest often into fall. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and occasional hummingbirds. Spotted Horsemint, Monarda punctata, is a clump forming, native perennial with lemony to oregano scented, narrow foliage. It is found throughout much of the central and eastern US and as far west as New Mexico and is commonly found on dryish, well-drained, and often poor, sandy soils. Spotted Horsemint makes an easy and reliable addition to naturalistic settings like roadsides, prairies, and meadows. Readily reseeds on exposed soils. Deer and rabbit resistant. The 1" long magenta to fuchsia tubes open to display white petals with purple markings and seemingly cover up this plant throughout the growing season to potentially year round under warm frost free conditions. The flowers attract a variety of bees, butterflies and is reported to be a hummingbird magnet. 6" wide rounded clusters of 1" wide deep blue-purple to dark purple trumpet shaped flowers are produced atop sturdy 3' high stalks in summer that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Though recent competition has increased when it comes to reliably cold hardy Agapanthus cultivars, Storm Cloud is still considered to be one of the most reliable, naturally winter dormant cultivars but it will benefit from a breathable mulch in any area that experiences freezing temperatures for extended periods. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established but generally prefers an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil in a full to mostly sunny site. The 4-5" wide buttery yellow flowers are centered by a contrasting deep red to burgundy eye at the base of the staminal column and is surrounded by a broad halo of white. Sylvia Goodman is an unusual Tropical Hibiscus with a vigorous upright to rounded growth habit and has exceptional flower power producing a potentially year-round display of its showy blossoms. The flower coloration, vigor, and growth habit are similar to Sport of Sports or Yellow El Capitolio which may be in this cultvar's lineage.  Provide a full to partly sunny site in a rich fertile, acidic soil with good drainage for optimum vigor and flowering. Clusters of soft yellow-orange tubular buds mature into medium orange tubular trumpet-shaped flowers that darken as they age. Flowering begins in late winter to early spring and continues cyclically throughout the growing season and finishing up in fall at the end of hummingbird season. Tangerine Princess Coral Honeysuckle, a Louisiana selection of Lonicera sempervirens, is a native, twining, deciduous, woody vine that is one of the longest flowering vines for attracting hummingbirds. The mother plant was discovered during a tour of the Dr. Charles Allen Nature Preserve in northern Louisiana with its namesake noted botanist, author, and retired professor Dr. Charles Allen, Ken and Sonie Milton, etal. Coral or Trumpet Honeysuckle will happily twine through a 6' high chain link fence or up an 8' arbor, trellis, or post. Caterpillar host: Chalcedon Checkerspot. Large rounded to pyramidal clusters of lightly fragrant, bright purplish-pink flowers that are produced atop the sturdy often red tinged stems attracting mainly butterflies. The show begins in early summer and lasts for several weeks and potentially longer if plants are deadheaded. Texas Pink Garden Phlox, a selection of Phlox paniculata, is a disease resistant, clump forming, upright growing, herbaceous, native perennial growing to about 3' high and 1-2' wide. This is one of the few Garden or Summer Phlox selections that we recommend for areas with hot humid summers of the southeast. Garden Phlox will do best in an open, full sun to partially shaded site, with a well-draining, rich and fertile, acidic soil with average moisture and an organic mulch is highly recommended. This miniature cousin of the Angel's Trumpet is easily enjoyed as a container plant where not hardy. Site in full sun to partial shade in a fertile, average to well-drained, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering.
