Nong Nooch Vine

Petraeovitex bambusetorum  

The loose hanging flower clusters of the rare Nong Nooch Vine can reach over 4' in length! Long-lasting bright yellow bracts subtend the creamy white tubular flowers and the dark green tropical foliage makes a wonderful foil for this easily grown tropical climber that blooms throughout the warmer months of the year. Grow the Nong Nooch Vine as a vine on small to medium-sized trellises or allow it to trail in hanging baskets. The flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and likely larger bees. It can be grown in full sun but greenhouse grown plants, like ours, should be slowly acclimated to sunny conditions or leaf burn may occur. Rich reddish-orange flowers emerge from dark spikes that sit atop sturdy upright to arching stems with blue tinted foliage and are produced over a long period in summer on well-established plantings. The Mark Collins form of the Scarlet Ginger is considered to be the same as the cultivar 'Palani' and was collected by the late Ginger guru in Bhutan or Nepal. Small clusters of unusual looking, funnel-shaped deep red flowers are tipped with contrasting white and green with the insides of the flowers being streaked and flecked with brown. The flowers are produced in early to midsummer atop 2-3' high stems and attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. The Parrot Lily, Alstroemeria psittacina, is an old pass-a-long heirloom perennial whose rhizomatous habit may be too aggressive for most garden settings but in the right location it makes an easy and rewarding informal groundcover. Alstroemerias prefer an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil and tend to be sturdiest where they receive atleast 4 hours of direct sunlight. *Where summers are hot, consider providing shade or filtered shade during the hottest part of the day. 1" long recurving light lavender petals are topped by a large boss of starkly contrasting deep red to purplish red filaments that are tipped by contrasting yellow stamens and are produced in about midspring. Pollinated flowers may be followed by greenish oblong tropical flavored guava-like fruit. Pineapple Guava, Acca sellowiana or Feijoa sellowiana, is a medium to large evergreen shrub, sometimes trained into a small tree, that is cloaked in deep grayish green to olive gray green foliage that has a silvery reverse. The plants have a naturally rounded habit at maturity and typically do not require pruning and the plants have few disease or pest problems so long as they are grown in a well-drained soil. Wait for ripened 2-3" long fruits fall to the ground and allow them to continue to ripen in a cool dry area. Once they soften and the fragrance intensifies you know they are ready for eating. They have minty-ish pineapple-like flavor and fragrance. For the best fruit production plant at least two different varieties or seedlings. Ours are seed grown plants. The flowers themselves are edible also and would likely be best used in a salad. Item# 1207

The upright to arching stems are brightly adorned with hanging clusters of red, red-orange, to rarely yellow tubular flowers beginning in late spring and continuing until late summer. Pine-Leaved Penstemon or Beardtongue, Penstemon pinifolius, is a very low shrub-like perennial whose upright to arching stems are adorned with fine 1" long narrow deep green foliage that arises from what can become a woody base. Pineleaf or Pine-Leaved Penstemon is native to the dry desert regions of SE Arizona and SW New Mexico but is tolerant of moist conditions provided it has a very well-drained sandy to rocky mineral soil. It has been reported to be hardy into zone 3 but may require a 'dry' mulch and a protected area. This is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner and we feel if it can perform exceptionally well in humid England it should do well in the humid Southeastern US. Item# 12419
