Morris Berd Smooth Phlox

Phlox glaberrima 'Morris Berd', P. carolina 'Morris Berd'

In spring to early summer clusters of rich rosy pink flowers are produced atop 18-24" high sturdy stems providing a feast for butterflies and hummingbirds. Morris Berd Smooth Phlox, a highly disease resistant selection of Phlox glaberrima or P. carolina depending on the source, is a clump-forming, slowly spreading rhizomatous native perennial that readily develops into a dense groundcovering mass of foliage and stems. This sunloving perennial is decidous in the colder portions of its range but may remain evergreen with purplish winter foliage in warmer winter regions. This easy to grow Phlox has proven to be highly resistant to powdery mildew and was in the top four in trials both at Mt. Cuba Center and the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Mulberry Jam Salvia, Sage

Salvia 'Mulberry Jam'

The Mulberry Jam Salvia has loose spikes of 1" long deep fuchsia tubular flowers which emerge from darkly contrasting calyxes on near purple stems. It flowers from late spring or early summer until fall under good conditions. This is a medium-sized Salvia with a moderately bushy habit. Provide a full to mostly sunny position in a well-drained soil for the best results. The flowers attract hummingbirds and larger butterflies occasionally as well as providing pollen for bees. Nachtvlinder Salvia, Autumn Sage

Salvia x jamensis 'Nachtvlinder'

Wow! Possibly THE darkest purple Salvia on the market today! Dark colored spikes of deep royal purple, sometimes with a hint of red, two-lipped tubular flowers are produced from spring to fall on a compact well-branched vigorous plant. Nachtvlinder Salvia is a perennial Salvia with excellent vigor and flower power growing to about 24" high and wide and is adorned with glossy green fragrant foliage. Nachtvlinder translates to "night butterfly" or "moth" and was discovered as a chance seedling in the gardens of Hessenhoff Nursery in the Netherlands and is reported to have withstood temperatures as low as -4oF. The 2-3" wide light sky-blue trumpets with yellow throats are produced throughout the warmer months of the year, to year-round under warm tropical conditions, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds all on a compact upright to spilling plant with medium green foliage. The Natal Blue Bell, Thunbergia natalensis, is very similar to the slightly more commonly grown Blue Glory Vine, Thunbergia battiescombeii. Like its cousin, this is a tropical herbaceous perennial producing a multitude of upright to sprawling stems to about 18-24" high and sprawling to about 36-48" wide and it can be enjoyed as a container plant or in the ground in zones 9 and warmer. Newell's Red Cestrum

Cestrum fasciculatum var newellii, Cestrum x 'Newellii'

A vigorous, naturally evergreen shrub bearing large clusters of tubular maroon flowers at the ends of arching branches from spring to fall and or nearly year round under warm frost free conditions. Pollinated flowers may be followed by reddish purple berries. The fuzzy bronze-red green foliage adds to its interest. An excellent choice for hummingbirds and larger butterflies. Nong Nooch Vine

The loose hanging flower clusters of the rare Nong Nooch Vine can reach over 4' in length! Long-lasting bright yellow bracts subtend the creamy white tubular flowers and the dark green tropical foliage makes a wonderful foil for this easily grown tropical climber that blooms throughout the warmer months of the year. Grow the Nong Nooch Vine as a vine on small to medium-sized trellises or allow it to trail in hanging baskets. The flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and likely larger bees. It can be grown in full sun but greenhouse grown plants, like ours, should be slowly acclimated to sunny conditions or leaf burn may occur. Orange Aphelandra

Aphelandra leonardii x A. sinclairiana

Candelabra-like spikes of orange bracts that subtend rich orangey coral colored 2" tubular flowers that are designed for hummingbird pollination are produced throughout much of the year on this tropical beauty. An evergreen shrub in its native habitat it can easily be enjoyed as a container plant for a lightly shaded patio. This is very similar to Aphelandra sinclairiana but a few minor differences set it apart making us think that it may be A. leonardii. Small clusters of unusual looking, funnel-shaped deep red flowers are tipped with contrasting white and green with the insides of the flowers being streaked and flecked with brown. The flowers are produced in early to midsummer atop 2-3' high stems and attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. The Parrot Lily, Alstroemeria psittacina, is an old pass-a-long heirloom perennial whose rhizomatous habit may be too aggressive for most garden settings but in the right location it makes an easy and rewarding informal groundcover. Peaches and Cream Grevillea, Hybrid Australian Silk Oak

The large conical spikes are composed of tubular flowers that curl around curiously at their tips open a pastel creamy yellow and mature to a peachy pink and orange are produced nearly year round attracting both hummingbirds and bees. At maturity the red tipped styles spring open providing additional contrast and creating a bottlebrush-like display. Peaches and Cream Grevillea is a compact well-branched medium-sized heat and sunloving evergreen shrub that is cloaked in medium-textured deeply cut rich green foliage. Grevillea are normally somewhat xeric but Peaches and Cream has proven to be wonderfully tolerant of high humidity and average moist soils but will need little supplemental water once well-established in the garden or landscape. A rare and highly prized, the Pedali Tree or Purple Radermachera prodcues 2" wide light purple trumpets with contrasting yellow to orange beelines in the throat are produced throughout the growing season or yearround in warm tropical climates. A.k.a. Purple Radermachera Tree, this is a vigorous exceptionally free-flowering small tropical tree with glossy rich green foliage reaching about 20-25' high at maturity making it an excellent size as a smaller specimen in the landscape or as a street tree. Unlike many in the Radermachera genus this one lacks the fragrance but makes up for it with its flower show. It can also be grown as an indoor plant that is prized for its glossy green foliage but flowering is best where it receives direct sunlight. Item# 12015
