Tropical Plants

Grown mainly for its large aromatic heart-shaped tropical foliage that produce a strong root beer-like fragrance when crushed along with contrasting narrow creamy white arching 'flowers' in the form of a 'spadix'. The Rootbeer Tree, Piper auritum, is a vigorous, naturally evergreen, shrub-like herbaceous tropical that can be grown as a die-back perennial into zone 8. In the garden and landscape it can spread aggressively and invasively, like some mints, via fleshy white underground rhizomes and can be difficult to eradicate once well established. It is generally easiest to contain when grown as a container plant that is not in contact with soil below it. The Rootbeer Tree is widely used as an herb in Meso-American cultures like Oaxacan. It can be used fresh or dried to flavor soups, eggs, drinks and is an essential ingredient in Mole Verde. Item# 789

The large deep purplish red petals of Ruby Glow Passionflower are topped with a halo of deep bluish purple filaments. A heady sweet fragrance fills the air when this beautiful passionvine is in flower and it may produce very large, up to 3"W x 5"L, yellow tropical fruit if the flowers are cross pollinated by another species, cultivar, or seedling passionflower. Ruby Glow is a vigorous growing, heat loving tropical vine that can reach 20'H under good conditions. Item# 631.

The nearly 1/2" wide ruby red flowers adorn the narrow elongating spikes of this large growing Porterweed from spring to frost. Spikes of deep red upward facing funnel-shaped flowers are produced non-stop from mid to late spring to fall atop the rich glossy deep green foliage attracting hummingbirds, occasional butterflies, and long-tongued bees. San Antonio Red Hummingbird Bush, a selection of Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. wrightii, is a small decidous native shrub from South Texas with excellent flower power. This easy and reliable heirloom has an upright to spreading busny habit rarely exceeding 3-4' in height (3'x3' is fairly typical in our zone 8B gardens) and it revels in the heat and sun of summer and is undaunted by the high humidity and high rainfall of the southeastern US. In the northernmost portion of its hardiness range, zones 7A-8A, the Hummingbird Bush may freeze back to near groundlevel in the hardest winters but readily returns to flowering by mid to late spring. Provide a full sun to mostly sunny site in a well-drained, fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Small and tough enough for container culture but it also makes a low-maintenance addition the garden and landscape. Item# 10034

The thick, smooth, succulent, upright to trailing stems are rounded to 4-angled and tend to be green and purple when grown in high indirect light but become burgundy under full sun conditions. In summer Schinz's Carrion Flower produces 3-5" wide burgundy to brownish yellow starfish-shaped flowers that have a fringe of purple to burgundy club-shaped hairs dangling from the edges of the petals and tremor at the slightest breeze attracting insects for pollination. Like the larger growing Starfish Cactus, the flowers produce a light scent of rotting meat to attract their main pollinators - flies. This is an easy to grow succulent that will readily multiply into a dense mass of short upright stems and where allowed to trail the stems can grow to exceed 18" long. Provide full sun to bright indirect sunlight in a very well-draining, cactus-like soil for optimum vigor, health and flowering. Makes an easy windowsill, porch, or patio plant whose unusual flowers are sure to be a conversation piece. It can tolerate slightly more moisture when in active growth but should still be allowed to become moderately dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter, especially if grown under cool conditions. These are well-established young plants with multiple plants per pot. Item# 12633

1-1/2" long, deep orange tubular flowers with lavender upper petals and exerted stamens give this cute Cuphea the 'batface' look and are produced throughout the warmer months of the year, or year round where winters are frost free. The flowers attract loads of hummingbirds and other long-tongued pollinators. This is a bushy shrub-like and herbaceous, tender perennial suitable for sunny outdoor locations and can be overwintered in bright indoor locations where not hardy. Enjoy Schumann's Cuphea as a container plant or in the garden. Provide a well-drained, moderately fertile soil for the best results. Item# 10702.

Shredded White Fantasy, or locally simply Shredded White, produces hanging clusters of long pure white flowers composed of a double cluster of loose petals that twist and flare outward at the bottom like a petticoat beneath the dark green fuzzy tropical foliage. Angel's Trumpets are fast growing tropical shrubs that act-like dieback perennials in the northern parts of their range but readily return from the roots in spring. They also make easy to enjoy container plants that can be overwintered indoors. Item# 811.

The Silk Floss Tree yields 4-5" wide fuchsia, or rarely creamy yellow to near burgundy, Hibiscus-like flowers with a speckled yellow to cream throat which covers this tree over a long period in late summer and well into fall. The Silk Floss Tree is fast growing when young and eventually develops a rounded crown and a gray bottle-shaped trunk typically covered in large thorns. It generally grows to about 40' x 40' but can reach 60-80' after many years. The large deep green palmate foliage is often dropped just prior to flowering. A mainstay of southern and western Texas and New Mexico butterfly gardens! Bright yellow daisies are produced from late spring into fall and are held against a foil of dark green, deeply lobed, fragrant, narrow foliage with the heaviest flowering occurring in fall. Skeleton-Leaf Goldeneye, Viguiera stenoloba and now Sidneya tenuifolia, is a native, naturally evergreen, small shrub with fine-textured, very dark green, deeply lobed, strongly resiny fragrant foliage that is resistant to being browsed by deer and rabbits. It is tough as nails and is highly drought resistant once well-established. Use it as a low maintenance formal or informal hedge, back drop, or groundcover.
