Deer Resistant Plants

The bright buttery yellow, narrow foliage whorls densely around the upright stems and is tolerant of full sun conditions in the northern portions of its range without burning. A new twist on a popular old favorite, the Golden Dragon™ Plum Yew, a selection of Cephalotaxus harringtoniana, is a tough and easy, low maintenace, small evergreen shrub with a dense compact habit and a soft texture slowly growing to about 3-4' high and wide. It can be used as both low maintenance container specimens as well as in the garden and landscape where its brilliant foliage will create a wonderful contrast with its neighbors. *The Plum Yews can tolerate full sun in areas with cooler summer temperatures but may be best where they receive some midday and/or afternoon shade in hot summer climates. They are deer resistant and are shade tolerant but Golden Dragon™ will have the brightest foliage coloration where it receives at least some direct sunlight, preferably about 4 hours or more. Dense pyramidal shaped clusters composed of hundreds of small bright golden yellow flowers are produced atop short sturdy 18-24" high stems in mid to late summer well into fall attracting a variety of pollinators. Golden Fleece Autumn or Heart-Leaved Goldenrod, a selection of Solidago sphacelata, is a compact rhizomatous perennial adorned with heart-shaped foliage that makes an easy and informal groundcover eventually spreading to about 30" wide in 3-5 years. Discovered as a chance seedling in an Eden, North Carolina garden and introduced by Richard Lighty of  Mt. Cuba Center in 1985. It won the 1994 Internationale Stauden-Union’s Award for an outstanding new plant in Switzerland. Golden Fleece was also one of the few 4 out of 4-star rated cultivars in the 2000 Chicago Botanic Gardens trials and proved to have excellent resistance to both rust and powdery mildew. Clusters of bright golden yellow upward facing daisies sit atop sturdy stems and emerge from rosettes of finely cut medium green foliage in early(8B) to midspring(6), depending on your cold hardiness zone. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Golden Groundsel is rhizomatous native perennial that readily develops into a groundcover and is tolerant of moist shaded conditions as well as in rain gardens, at the edges of ponds or other perennial water sources, or use it in naturalistic settings, roadsides, meadows and prairies. Large, double to triple flowered or more, intensely fragrant, long lasting flowers open a soft primrose yellow and age to a golden yellow to near orange. Goldflame's rich perfume lasts into the morning and is sure to turn heads and attract the local hummingbird moth population! It begins flowering at 4-5' high making it well adapted to container culture. Medium-sized, formal double flowers are pale pink blushing to white at the outer edges and may or may not show darker pink variegation with flowering occurring in mid to late season, January to April. The light colored flowers are held against a foil of deep green foliage. Enormous conicle lavender clusters, to 4" wide and 12-14" long, composed of tiny fragrant nectar rich flowers adorn the weeping stems of this fountaining Butterfly Bush in summer and fall. Strongly fragrant, long-lasting, very double, 1.5", white blooms never seem to let you down when you are looking for something fragrant in the garden or greenhouse during the warmer months. Few plants can consistently attract as many butterflies as this Lantana making the plant appear alive with these fluttering wonders, especially in summer and fall. Grandpa's Pumpkin Patch Lantana produces yellow centered clusters of brilliant pumpkin orange flowers from late spring to frost on this vigorous Lantana that can certainly keep up with New Gold for flowering ability. Item# 9605

The tall dusky flower spikes are adorned with grape juice purple buds that open to display the deep magenta, pea-like flowers with a starkly contrasting creamy to yellow keel and are produced in summer held above the dense mounds of lush green foliage. The flowers attract a variety of bee species. Grape Escape Baptisia or False Indigo, a hybrid cultivar of our native species (a.k.a. nativar), replaces the older Grape Taffy and boasts deeper richer colors, heavier flowering and vigor. The small to medium-sized single flowers can range from red tinged to lavender often with purple veining and are centered by a large boss of contrasting yellow tipped white filaments and are produce late in mid to late season or March-April. Flower color tends to be the most purple where soils are strongly acidic and this seems to be fairly common for purple flowered Camellias. Dense spikes of pea-like blossoms that are exceptionally dark purple with a hint of red are accented by contrasting primrose yellow keels and are held above the tidy mounds of gray-green foliage. Flowers are produced in late spring to early summer and attract mainly bees. Grape Taffy Baptisia or False Indigo, a hybrid cultivar of US native species (a.k.a. nativar), is one of the most compact in this category growing to just 24-30"H x 30-36"W. Bright creamy white and bluish green variegated foliage adorn the trailing stems and act as a contrasting foil for the royal purple, saucer shaped flowers that are produced throughout the growing season and may be followed by decorative bright red berries. The foliage alone makes it worth growing as a specimen plant or use it as a bright spiller or thrilling groundcover beneath larger plants. A blue flowered Sasanqua! Dark purple buds open to purplish-red the first day and change to lavender-blue the second creating a multi-colored effect on this semi-dwarf evergreen Sasanqua in fall. The blues are intensified in acid soils. Rich deep green rounded foliage on a compact rounded plant. Very similar to Shi-Shi Gashira in foliage and habit and is a chance seedling of the Louisiana Super Plant selection Shi-Shi Gashira. Item# 9636.

Medium-sized, semi-double, red to pinkish-red flowers are centered by a large boss of nicely contrasting gold stamens and are produced late in the season, March-April. The pollen laden flowers attract bees and other pollinators. The medium-sized purple, red, brown to near black figs have a thin skin with a  juicy, mildly fruity flavored, sweet flesh that ranges from deep amber or orange to a near strawberry heart typically ripening in September. Grise Olivette Fig is a French fig whose name translates to "gray olive". Expect it to be a smaller plant as this variety tends to have lower vigor which may lend it to use as a containerized plant. A Camellia Hall of Fame Award winner! Huge, brilliant glowing red double flowers with a boss of bright golden stamens are an absolute standout in the garden.
