Nuttall's Wild Indigo

Baptisia nuttalliana

Soft primrose yellow pea-shaped flowers adorn the tips of the plants singly and in small clusters in early to midspring providing important nectar and pollen to Bumblebees. Nuttall's Wild Indigo, Baptisia nuttalliana, is a long-lived, taprooted, herbaceous perennial that develops into a neat, naturally rounded, shrub-like form cloaked in olive-tinged to blue-tinged green foliage and growing to about 24" high and maybe slightly wider. We generally see this species in drier sandier soils in the pineywoods along with B. bracteata although it is fairly adaptable as long as soils have average or better drainage. This species is limited to southern Arkansas, eastern Texas, and throughout Louisiana excluding the Mississippi River floodplains. The flowers are followed by small, few seeded pods that turn brown at maturity and provide fodder for seed eating songbirds and smaller mammals. Provide Nuttall's Wild Indigo with a full sun to part sun site in a fertile, average moist, acidic soil with decent drainage. Easy and reliable. Item# 13127

A vigorous yet dense and compact growing evergreen shrub with a naturally upright habit becoming rounded with age. Hybridized and registered by Dr. Clifford Parks in 1975. This has quickly become one of our favorites! Image courtesy of Mercedes A. Hanchey. Item# 12744

Shades of red, burnt orange, golden yellow, and green are randomly splashed across the glossy evergreen foliage of this durable groundcover. Ogon Nishiki Asiatic Jasmine, a.k.a. Salsa, Summer Sunset, and Golden Brocade, creates a fiery splash of color anywhere in the garden or spilling from containers, over walls, or even from hanging baskets. Trachelospermum asiaticum is a naturally evergreen, 6-12" high groundcover to small twining vine that can produce creamy yellow fragrant flowers similar to Confederate or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, when grown as a vine or when allowed to trail from hanging baskets and over retaining walls, though it is generally infrequent and is the exception rather than the rule. Few plants can compete with the disposition of this dense groundcover once it is fully established in the landscape making it an easy and reliable choice for landscapers and tough to garden in areas, like beneath trees, where few other plants can thrive or in parking lot islands. It is heat loving, both sun and shade tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and has few pest or disease issues particularly when grown in soil with average or better drainage. For the best and brightest foliage coloration some direct sunlight during the day is beneficial and the more the better. Probably best suited to zones 8 and warmer for inground plantings but it can be used as a groundcover in containers beneath larger plants. Item# 941

The white, 4-petaled, dogwood-like flowers are produced in midspring on the arching branches and are centered by a boss of contrasting yellow stamens. The Mock Orange, a species of Philadelphus, is an heirloom, deciduous, multi-stemmed arching to rounded, suckering but non-aggressive, medium-sized shrub. Its bare winter stems provide interesting exfoliating bark in shades of deep brownish red and orange and interestingly the buds are protected and hidden beneath the bark. Unlike some spring flowering shrubs, the Mock Orange does not seem to be affected by winter chill and flowers reliably each spring even in zone 9. The Mock Orange is tolerant of some shade but tends to have the fullest densest habit and optimum flowering where it receives at least a half a day of direct sunlight and full to mostly sunny conditions are optimum. Moderately drought resistant once fully established but will look best where it receives average moisture in an average to well-drained, fertile soil. Item# 13026
