Orange Sherbert Firecracker Flower, Crossandra

Crossandra infundibuliformis 'Orange Sherbert'

Clusters of widely flaring soft orange flowers are borne from spring to fall to year-round under warm tropical conditions and are held above and among the rich deep green foliage on an upright to spreading herbaceous tropical. Crossandras are excellent for mixed containers and in the garden for bright color in shaded areas where they often flower until frost. If kept from freezing temperatures they can easily reach 3-4' high or can be pruned to keep them in bounds. They can tolerate full sun but in the hot summer climates they have a tendency to curl their leaves on the hottest days and so midday and or afternoon shade may be optimum. Crossandras are butterfly pollinated typically. Item# 535.

The upright to arching stems are brightly adorned with hanging clusters of red, red-orange, to rarely yellow tubular flowers beginning in late spring and continuing until late summer. Pine-Leaved Penstemon or Beardtongue, Penstemon pinifolius, is a very low shrub-like perennial whose upright to arching stems are adorned with fine 1" long narrow deep green foliage that arises from what can become a woody base. Pineleaf or Pine-Leaved Penstemon is native to the dry desert regions of SE Arizona and SW New Mexico but is tolerant of moist conditions provided it has a very well-drained sandy to rocky mineral soil. It has been reported to be hardy into zone 3 but may require a 'dry' mulch and a protected area. Senecio confusus 'Sao Paulo', Pseudogynoxis chenopodiodes 'Sao Paulo'

Clusters of dark red to red-orange daisy-like flowers with yellow fading to red 'eyes' are produced throughout the growing season, and potentially year-round under warm tropical conditions, on this vigorous and easy small to medium-sized vine. The Sao Paulo Mexican Love Vine, a somewhat rare selection of Senecio confusus, is a naturally evergreen, twining herbaceous tropical vine that can be grown as a die-back perennial in areas with mild winters, like zones 9-10 and even into 8B, if provided with a breathable insulative protective mulch for winter. It is vigorous enough to be grown as an annual in colder climates and can also be maintained as a container plant that is overwintered indoors. The Mexican Love Vine, a.k.a Mexican Flame Vine, is a heat and sunloving free-flowering tropical suitable for small to medium-sized trellises, fences, and can even be allowed to spill from hanging baskets. The flowers attract a variety of butterfly species and seem to be especially popular with migrating Monarchs as well as bees and hummingbirds.
