Hot Lips Salvia, Littleleaf Sage

Salvia x jamensis 'Hot Lips'  

Spikes of red lipped, pure white or occasionally solid red, two-lipped tubular flowers are produced continuously from spring to fall on this durable drought and heat resistant perennial salvia. Hot Lips Salvia develops into a mounding upright to spreading plant that loves the heat and sun. It is considered a hybrid by some but most experts consider it to be a selection of Littleleaf Sage, S. microphylla. Its bicolor flowers attract a variety of pollinators including hummingbirds, butterflies, and larger bees. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a fertile well-draining soil for optimum vigor and flower power. In areas that experience hard freezes plant this Salvia out between early spring to midsummer to ensure winter survival. Hoya bilobata, H. tsangii  

One of the daintiest of Hoyas with small olive green foliage and produces 1-2" clusters of tiny brick red flowers with pink centers. The foliage can vary from being heart-shaped to simple. The medium to light green narrow elongated canoe-shaped foliage, sometimes with a bluish tinge, is often edged with a narrow dark purple to black line and adorns the lax stems from which the flattened, hanging clusters of dark maroon rounded flowers are produced in late spring and summer. Hoya wayetii is an exceptionally easy and rewarding specimen that is well suited to hanging basket culture but can also be enjoyed on a small trellis or other support for the twining to trailing vines. Dicliptera suberecta, Justicia suberecta, Jacobinia suberecta  

Clusters of 2" deep reddish orange upward facing tubular blooms are born from summer to fall, making this a choice plant for fall migrating Hummingbirds. The bright nectar rich flowers are held on sturdy stems above the beautiful bluish gray velvety foliage on this tough little heat and sun loving perennial. Typically freezes to the ground in winter but readily returns in spring. Drought tolerant once well established and does best in well drained soils. John Elsley Firecracker Vine

Manettia cordifolia 'John Elsley'  

Along with the Coral Honeysuckles, this is easily our top recommended vine for attracting hummingbirds! The bright red, 2" long, tubular flowers are born in profusion from spring to fall on this vigorous but small growing perennial vine that appears to have been perfectly designed for hummingbirds. Katherine Allison Evergreen Azalea

Rhododendron x 'Katherine Allison'  

The 3 1/2" wide, ruffled, deep red funnel shaped flowers are produced in early to midspring and are somewhat reminiscent of the old favorite Red Ruffles. Katherine Allison Azalea, is an evergreen Dr. Eugene Aromi hybrid named for his granddaughter, having good vigor and with an initially upright habit eventually mounding out to about 4-5' high and wide. Developed in Mobile, Alabaman these were bred for good performance in the heat and humidity of the Southeast. Katherine Allison Azalea can be utilized as an informal hedge, specimen or anywhere else you would use a spring flowering medium-sized evergreen shrub in the garden and landscape. Azaleas do best in average moist, acidic soils that are rich in organic matter but have good to excellent drainage and should be top dressed with an organic mulch such as pine straw and pine bark. We recommend using a slow-release, non-burning fertilizer that is labeled for acidic loving plants. Azalea flowers attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
