Sparkling Burgundy Sasanqua Camellia

Camellia x hiemalis 'Sparkling Burgundy' PP1539 (expired)

An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! The small to medium-sized, double, ruby red to rose red flowers, occasionally with a lavender tinge, showing varying amounts of yellow stamens among the central petaloids, are produced early in the season, October to December. Sparkling Burgundy Sasanqua Camellia, a C. hiemalis hybrid with Shi-Shi Gashira lineage, has a vigorous, yet compact, well-branched habit growing to about 5-7' high and equally wide and is cloaked in medium-textured, dark green, glossy foliage. Use this medium-sized evergreen shrub as a fall flowering accent, hedge, or even a container plant in formal or informal settings. This was one of the earliest patented Camellias assigned USPP1539. The Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions. Item# 13229

Tall spikes of orange buds open to bright orange flowers with contrasting deep red stamens. The flowers deepen to red, red-orange as they age and are produced in late summer atop the blue-green stalks adorned with smooth, wide tropical looking foliage. Some sources suggest that this is a new species that was collected from Thailand although it resembles Hedychium coccineum. Vigorous and relatively tall growing. Torpedo is a slightly larger flowering form of Batface Cuphea which produces 1-1/2" long red tubular blooms that end with a purple bat-like face that is accented by the bright red 'ears' on a naturally mounding plant. Camellia japonica 'Tricolor Superba'

An RHS Award of Garden Merit selection. The medium to large semi-double flowers are typically variegated in almost random combinations of near white, pink, and red or flowers may be solid white, pink, or red and all flowers sport a tight boss of white pistils tipped with contrasting gold stamens. Flowering occurs in mid to late season or January to April and may attract bees and butterflies on warm winter and spring days. Tricolor Superba Camellia is a large flowered Japonica type with a vigorous rate of growth eventually developing into an upright and rounded densely branching large evergreen shrub to 8-12' high and 6-8' wide. White Bleeding Heart Vine, Bleeding Glory Bower

Deep red butterfly shaped flowers emerge from the large clusters of starkly contrasting bright white calyxes and are produced throughout the growing season to nearly year-round under warm tropical conditions. The flowers attracting mainly butterflies but potentially hummingbirds other pollinators. The White Bleeding Heart Vine, Clerodendrum thompsonae, is a naturally evergreen, twining, tropical vine cloaked in large, deep green foliage. The White Bleeding Heart Vine may freeze to the ground in the coldest portions of its range but established plants typically return in the spring. An easy and rewarding container or hanging basket specimen where not hardy. Chi Long Han Zhu Rose, which roughly translates to White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth, is an easy to grow heirloom garden rose and was among the first repeat flowering roses exported out of China. A densely branching shrub rose with red to bronze new growth with good disease resistance and excellent flower power. Chi Long Han Zhu can flower for 10-12 months a year and in the coldest winters it may take a brief respite only to show off again in mild winter weather.
