Large clusters of fiery orange-red tubular flowers are produced from summer through fall to yearround in warm tropical climates and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Clusters of shiny black 3/8" fruit develop on pollinated flowers and are utilized by songbirds. When grown in full to mostly sunny conditions the foliage generally has a reddish tinge. The Firebush, Hamelia patens var. patens, is native to the southern half of Florida and is evergreen under frost free conditions and can develop into a medium to large shrub. *We have grown this species in our zone 8B gardens for over 30 years as a quite reliable 3-4' high die-back perennial. Each winter it freezes back to its crown and then returns in mid to late spring to flower through much of summer and into fall. Provide a full to mostly sunny site, although they are fairly tolerant, for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 898

Mexican Hat, Grey Headed Coneflower, Upright Prairie Coneflower, Red Hats

Ratibida columnifera, R. columnaris, Rudbeckia columnifera

Solid burgundy, burgundy tipped with yellow (the typical color), to solid yellow ray flowers surround the tall narrow grayish green cones of disc flowers and may be produced from late spring well into fall under average moisture conditions. The Mexican Hat or Gray Headed Coneflower, Ratibida columnifera, is an exceptionally easy to grow heat and sun-loving tap-rooted native perennial that is tough enough for roadside plantings right up next to the asphalt but colorful enough to be utilized in informal cottage garden settings. The flowers attract smaller pollinators and other garden beneficials and the somewhat lacy gray green foliage contrasts nicely with surrounding perennials. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in soils with average or better drainage. Item# 10965

Mexican Plume, Mexican Shrimp Plant, Orange Shrimp Plant

Justicia fulvicoma, Beloperone blechiodes, B. comosa, B. fulvicoma, Drejerella comosa, D. fulvicoma

Orange to yellow tubular flowers emerge from spikes of red bracts atop compact plants from spring to fall to year round under warm tropical conditions. The Mexican Plume or Orange Shrimp Plant, Justicia fulvicoma, is a dense and lower growing Shrimp Plant with a more compact growing habit than the Red Shrimp Plant, Justicia brandegeeana, reaching about 24" high. It is quite tolerant of light conditions ranging from full sun to light shade but may have the densest habit in sunnier conditions. The flowers attract hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and other pollinators. Use the Mexican Plume to add color in containers, as a specimen or in mixed container gardens, as well as in the garden and landscape. Provide an average to well-drained, moderately fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Edged in broad bands of creamy white the medium green foliage of the Mezoo Variegated Ice Plant makes a wonderful low trailing plant to add to mixed container gardens, in hanging baskets, or in the ground. Oh me oh my oh! When Midnight Flare is in flower everyone says where can I get that! It produces some of the deepest and richest, fiery, clear red flowers known in the Azalea world. The 2" wide blossoms seemingly cover up the plant in spring and are held against a foil of deep green, slightly bronze tinged foliage. The Pagoda Flower produces huge spikes of 1/2" coral-pink to reddish orange butterfly shaped flowers from mid summer well into fall. The spikes can reach 18" high and are shaped very similarly to a Chinese pagoda with flowers opening continuously over a period of weeks.
