The white, 4-petaled, dogwood-like flowers are produced in midspring on the arching branches and are centered by a boss of contrasting yellow stamens. The Mock Orange, a species of Philadelphus, is an heirloom, deciduous, multi-stemmed arching to rounded, suckering but non-aggressive, medium-sized shrub. Its bare winter stems provide interesting exfoliating bark in shades of deep brownish red and orange and interestingly the buds are protected and hidden beneath the bark. Unlike some spring flowering shrubs, the Mock Orange does not seem to be affected by winter chill and flowers reliably each spring even in zone 9. The Mock Orange is tolerant of some shade but tends to have the fullest densest habit and optimum flowering where it receives at least a half a day of direct sunlight and full to mostly sunny conditions are optimum. Moderately drought resistant once fully established but will look best where it receives average moisture in an average to well-drained, fertile soil. Item# 13026

Party Princess™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive, Kaori Hime Holly Leaf Tea Olive, Osmanthus

Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' (a.k.a. O. heterophyllus 'Party Princess')

Small clusters of sweetly fragrant white flowers are borne in the leaf axils in fall on this tiny delicate looking evergreen shrub. Kaori Hime Holly Leaf Tea Olive ( or recently appropriately named Party Princess™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive ) is delicate looking but should be a tough and easy to grow evergreen shrub with fine textured dark green holly-like foliage that maxes out at about 1/2" long and according to Ted Stephens, who found this Japanese cultivar and introduced it to the US, should have the best cold hardiness of all of the Osmanthus species, most likely zone 6 hardy like its larger leaved parent, Osmanthus heterophyllus. This is an obvious bonsai candidate but it can also be grown as a container plant as well as in the garden in landscape as a hedge or specimen plant. Expect this very dwarf Holly Leaf Tea Olive to have a naturally upright to vase shaped habit but it can be pruned into a low hedge if so desired. Provide a well-drained average moist soil for optimum health and flowering although it is fairly adaptable to soil types. Item# 11646

Pineapple Guava, Feijoa, Guavasteen

Acca sellowiana, Feijoa sellowiana

1" long recurving light lavender petals are topped by a large boss of starkly contrasting deep red to purplish red filaments that are tipped by contrasting yellow stamens and are produced in about midspring. Pollinated flowers may be followed by greenish oblong tropical flavored guava-like fruit. Pineapple Guava, Acca sellowiana or Feijoa sellowiana, is a medium to large evergreen shrub, sometimes trained into a small tree, that is cloaked in deep grayish green to olive gray green foliage that has a silvery reverse. The plants have a naturally rounded habit at maturity and typically do not require pruning and the plants have few disease or pest problems so long as they are grown in a well-drained soil. Wait for ripened 2-3" long fruits fall to the ground and allow them to continue to ripen in a cool dry area. Once they soften and the fragrance intensifies you know they are ready for eating. They have minty-ish pineapple-like flavor and fragrance. For the best fruit production plant at least two different varieties or seedlings. Ours are seed grown plants. The flowers themselves are edible also and would likely be best used in a salad. Item# 1207

Pink Pearl Evergreen Azalea, Azuma-Kagami Azalea

Rhododendron x 'Azuma-Kagami', R. 'Pink Pearl', R. 'Wilson #16'

Loads of 1-1/2" wide, starry, hose in hose flowers are light pink blushed white and have a slightly darker pink blotch and flecks in early to midspring and nearly hide the dark green foliage in peak flowering. Pink Pearl Azalea, originally named Azuma Kagami in Japan and imported and renamed by E.H. Wilson as part of the 'Wilson's Fifty', is a moderately vigorous, medium sized, heirloom, Kurume evergreen azalea with a mounding habit to about 4-5'H. Its moderately vigorous habit lend this large growing evergreen azalea to use as an informal medium-sized hedge, specimen plant, and as a spring flowering backdrop for mixed perennial gardens as well as in the landscape. Azaleas do best in average moist, acidic soils that are rich in organic matter but have good to excellent drainage and should be top dressed with an organic mulch such as pine straw and pine bark. We recommend using a slow-release, non-burning fertilizer that is labeled for acidic loving plants. Azalea flowers attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Popcorn Spirea, Bridal Wreath Spirea

Spiraea prunifolia 'Plena' (sometimes 'Floreplena')

In late winter and early spring very double dainty white flowers often with a greenish eye are produced in profusion along the bare arching stems of this heirloom favorite. Bridal Wreath Spirea, or as we learned it Popcorn Spirea, develops into a medium to large deciduous shrub with a naturally arching and fountaining habit often accentuated by the weight of the numerous flowers. The somewhat fine-textured simple foliage is glossy and appears smooth edged at a glance although it is very finely toothed, unlike the bluish-green, matte finished, rhomboid shaped dentate foliage of the more commonly grown Reeve's Spirea (which is also commonly and confusingly called Bridal Wreath or Bridal Wreath Spirea) and develops good fall color in shades of red, orange, and into purple tones. Give it plenty of room and a well-drained, moderately fertile soil, preferably in full to mostly sunny site. Plant with caution as butterflies and hummingbirds will repeatedly attack the flowers. Sometimes they drop all leaves during shipping, but will grow more with good sun. Caterpillar host: Miami Blue and Mexican Yellow Item# 571

Pride of Mobile Evergreen Azalea

Rhododendron x 'Pride of Mobile'

The 2-1/2" to 3" wide, rich watermelon pink, funnel-shaped flowers sport a contrasting deep red blotch on the upper most petals and are produced in midspring on this highly popular old cultivar. Pride of Mobile Azalea, a.k.a. Elegans Superba or Watermelon, is a vigorous heirloom Southern Indica evergreen azalea with an initially upright habit to about 6-8'(-10') and wide.
