Variegated Toad Lilies, Toadlily

Tricyrtis hirta 'Variegata'

The 18" arching stems are adorned with deep green foliage edged in chartreuse and yellow and by late summer and fall when terminal clusters of orchid-like light purple to white flowers with darker speckling are produced. This Variegated Toadlily makes a beautiful addition to the shade garden where it is sure to shine. Toadlilies or Tricyrtis are slowly spreading rhizomatous winter deciduous perennials that are well suited to partially shaded sites with average moist soils. A few hours of cool sunlight like early morning, very late evening, or filtered shade help to ensure good vigor and flowering. They are generally considered hardy perennials well into zone 5. Baptisia alba, B. leucantha, B. albescens

12-18" long sturdy spikes of white pea-like blossoms contrast with the purplish black stems and are born in spring above the newly unfurling bluish green foliage on tall 3-4' stems. Baptisia's are durable pest and disease resistant native taprooted perennials and could be considered the Lupine for the south. White Woodland Painted Petals, White Flowering Grass

Freesia laxa 'Alba', Anomatheca laxa, A. cruenta, Lapeirousia laxa

From flattened iris-like bluish-green fans emerge spikes of pure white 1" wide flowers in late spring and early summer. An uncommon pure white form of Woodland Painted Petals or Flowering Grass, Freesia laxa var. alba is an easily grown cormous heirloom perennial and RHS Award of Garden Merit winner which readily multiplies via seed to make a loose groundcover. Provide an average to well-drained soil in a full to partly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. Freesia laxa is suitable for container culture as well as in the garden and landscape. Willowleaf Eastern Bluestar

Amsonia tabernaemontana var. salicifolia

Only one of two Amsonia species to receive a 5-star rating in the Chicago Botanic Gardens trials! Showy clusters of light blue star-shaped 1" wide flowers are produced in spring atop sturdy stems cloaked in dark green willow-like foliage. The Willowleaf Eastern Bluestar has the same basic habit and growth requirements of the more common Eastern Bluestar, Amsonia tabernaemontana var. tabernaemontana, but with larger showier flower clusters that seem to cover the plant, a neat dense vase-shaped habit, and clean disease resistant foliage. An easy to grow, clump-forming native perennial that is tolerant of wet to average moist soils preferring a full to mostly sunny site in the garden and landscape. Yellow Butterfly Ginger (Yellow)

Hedychium flavescens

Creamy yellow fragrant flowers with deeper gold markings are produced in fall atop the tall naturally arching to leaning stems adorned with large rich green tropical foliage. The Yellow Butterfly Ginger has flowers very similar and shape to the White Butterfly Ginger. This is one of the most vigorous (read tall) species that we grow so plan to give it plenty of room.
