8'H or Larger Shrubs

The nearly 1" wide creamy white starry spring flowers are streaked with pink and are soon followed by glossy deep purple new growth that matures to deep green. The Purple Glaze® Japanese Anise Shrub, Illicium anisatum 'Murasaki-no-sato', is a shade tolerant medium-sized to large growing evergreen shrub with a slow to medium rate of growth and naturally has an upright to rounded habit. It is somewhat resistant to short periods of drought once well-established and should be grown in a site with good drainage and average moist to moist soils in an area that receives shade during the hottest part of the day, especially in hot summer climates. The large to very large, deep coral pink flowers are centered by a boss of contrasting yellow stamens and the flowers are randomly flecked and splashed with white and are produced in early to midseason or December to March. R. L. Wheeler Variegated Camellia is a large and vigorous growing evergreen shrub with a naturally upright to rounded habit at maturity. Brilliant crimson red bottlebrush-like flowers are produced in summer often into fall to potentially year-round under warm tropical conditions and attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Red Clusters Bottlebrush, a selection of Callistemon viminalis, is a vigorous freely flowering, naturally evergreen large shrub that can also be trained into a small tree form that matures to about 12' high by about 8' wide. In zone 8, the foliage may drop after hard freezes potentially reducing flowering and so this cultivar may be best grow in warmer winter climates like zones 9 and 10. They can also be enjoyed as container plants where not reliably hardy. Provide Bottlebrush with a full to mostly sunny site in an average to well-draining, fertile soil and they are moderately drought resistant once fully established. Item# 603

The large to very large, loose anemone to peony form, bright red flowers typically showing contrasting gold stamens atop white filaments and are produced over an extended period beginning early in the season and continuing through late, November to April. The strikingly variegated new growth is broadly edged in creamy white to light greenish-yellow and each narrow leaf is centered by a contrasting line of deep green creating a nice contrast with the mature, often solid colored, deep green foliage. A K. Sawada 1939 introduction, Sarasa Camellia produces medium-sized semi-double pale flesh-pink flowers with contrasting dark purplish-pink flecks and stripes with a boss of gold tipped stamens against a backdrop of deep green glossy foliage. As per his 1934 watercolor record, Mr. Sawada says that this is a "very free bloomer" flowering in early to midseason (Dec-Feb). Sarasa originated from seed initially planted in 1925 that his brother had gathered and sent him from Japanese gardens. Item# 11834

An unusual Camellia discovered in the gardens of the late K. Sawada, the large mahogany red, peony form flowers have darker mahogany red overtones with occasional white tipped and flecked petals. Medium to large, lightly fragrant, loose peony form to semi-double, medium silvery-pink flowers with a boss of yellow stamens are produced in early to midseason, November to February. Large, 4-5" wide, fragrant, semi-double flowers of the purist white with wavy petals and a contrasting boss of golden yellow stamens shine like spotlights against the foil of deep green glossy foliage. Flowering begins early in the season in October continuing into December, with a few flowers into early January. Setsugekka Sasanqua Camellia has a vigorous moderately upright habit that rounds out with at maturity. This dense foliage of this large evergreen shrub lend it to use as a specimen, screen, hedge, or even a small evergreen tree form. The Sasanqua Camellias are tolerant of full sun to part sun conditions. Large to very large pure white flowers are composed of a row of overlapping wide petals that look as though someone tucked an anemone form flower neatly in its center. Shoal Creek Vitex produces 12" spikes of rich deep purplish-blue from late spring to fall.  This is a vigorous and disease free and drought tolerant spreading to upright deciduous shrub or small tree that attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators. Shoal Creek was selected as a Louisiana Super Plant for the spring of 2011 due to its large & richly colored spikes as well as for the fact that Vitex is an excellent low maintenance plant with a long flowering season. This variety has larger and more double flowers than many other Sasanquas. A very profuse bloomer over a long period in fall with beautiful clear-pink blossoms that are held against the deep rich green glossy foliage. A fairly compact growing Sasanqua that is amenable to shearing and shaping. Item# 896.

Clusters of white spring flowers are followed by green berries that slowly change through pink, to blue, and to near black once mature. The glossy, bronze-tinged, medium green, deciduous foliage of the Withe-rod Viburnum produces fall color in red and purple tones. This is an upright to rounded, medium-sized native shrub commonly found near wet areas. Considered by some to have the best tasting fruit of our native Viburnums giving it the name of Wild Raisin. The large to very large, pure white anemone form flowers, sometimes with a few yellow stamens peaking out from between the central boss of petaloids and are produced in early to midseason or Nov-February. Snow Chan Camellia, a sport of Shiro Chan which is itself a sport of Elegans, and each of these varieties tend to have a slower rate of growth and a more open habit with large deep green foliage lacily edged with large prominent teeth.
