The arrowhead shaped medium green foliage is decorated with darker purplish green round spots when young then matures to a rich medium green. Soon after leafing back out in spring, African False Hosta, Drimiopsis maculata, produces arching 1" diameter dense rounded spikes of small white buds that mature to green once the flowers open. This is a naturally decidous clump-forming, readily multiplying, semi-hardy tropical bulb that is well suited to shaded conditions and is suprisingly considered hardy in the garden into zone 7B per Tony Avent of Plant Delights. The shade-loving African False Hosta is well suited to container culture where it makes an easy and low-maintenance specimen plant, utilize it in mixed succulent gardens, as a groundcover under larger plants provided it gets sufficient light, as well as in the shaded garden or landscape. Its main requirement is a very well-drained soil. During active growth, average moisture is preferred and it can be allowed to remain a good deal dryer when dormant. We ship 3 flowering-sized bulbs actively growing in a 4.5" pot. Item# 12276

Salvia discolor, S. bonplandiana, S. nigricans

The exceptionally dark purple to near black tubular flowers peek out of the mealy white 1" long tubular calyxes that are borne in whorls around equally white stems in summer and into fall. Andean Silver-Leaf Sage, Salvia discolor, is a shrubby naturally scandent or sprawling herbaceous perennial from the Peruvian Andes Mountains that grows to about 2-3 feet high and 2-3 feet wide. The ovate dark green glossy opposite foliage has a brightly contrasting white reverse and is borne along mealy white stems. The foliage, stems, and buds are fragrant when brushed or bruised. Also known as Peruvian or Concolor Sage it is widely grown as 3'x3' shrub in the warmer parts of Europe. Anne Marie Lantana (Mounding, Yellow and Dark Pink)

Lantana camara 'Anne Marie' PP11310

The rounded flower clusters open sunny yellow, fade to orange, and finally mature to a deep purplish pink to near purple all atop a neatly rounded mound forming plant growing to about 18-24"H x 24-36"W. Anne Marie Lantana's neat full rounded habit lend it to use as a medium-sized container specimen plant for sunny sites or add it to the garden and landscape for spring to fall color. This is a sport of Irene Lantana discovered and introduced by the Kearley family who own Robrick Nursery, Hawthorne, FL and was named in honor of their youngest daughter. The flowers of Lantana attract a myriad of pollinators including bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other garden beneficials. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and continuous flowering. Australian Waxflower, Australian Hoya, Honeyvine

Hoya australis, H. bicarinata, H. pilosa, H. pubescens

The clusters of fragrant starry white flowers with a touch of contrasting red to burgundy at the base of the corona may be produced throughout the year under warm tropical conditions. The sweet and almost honey-like, spicily fragrant flowers attract butterflies, hummingbird moths, and other pollinators. The Australian Waxflower, Hoya australis, is an exceptionally vigorous growing, twining, evergreen, tropical vine with glossy rounded ovate foliage and burgundy new growth. It naturally wants to climb and the vines can reach 30' long if offered support but it can also easily be trained to a small 3' high trellis or as a hanging basket specimen. This appears to be one of the easier to grow species and is reported to tolerate some cool sunlight although the leaves may become more olive or yellowish green than the typical deep green coloration under high light conditions. Item# 12343

Grows To: Climbing to 30'H but can be maintained on a smaller 3' trellis or other support
Outdoor Light: Some cool direct sun - very early or very late in the day, Bright or Light shade, Filtered Shade

Large clusters of rich purple to red-purple flowers sit atop the sturdy 3-4' stems of this medium sized Ironweed in summer and potentially into fall. Baldwin's or Western Ironweed, Vernonia baldwinii, is an excellent source of midsummer pollen and nectar for long-tongued bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. This species is more drought resistant than many Ironweeds once well-established and it is important to note that this species can colonize an area via long rhizomes. Its ability to colonize an area may make it a better choice for naturalistic areas like meadows, prairies, and roadsides than in more formal garden settings. Provide good drainage and a full sun to mostly sunny site with average moisture. Deadhead once flowering is complete to prevent unwanted seedlings. Item# 12356

Belmont Gardenia, Cape Jasmine

Gardenia jasminoides 'Belmont' USPP00093 - expired

The intensely fragrant 4" wide double white flowers may produced throughout much of the year under warm tropical conditions and are held against a foil of large glossy dark green foliage. Belmont Gardenia is almost old enough to be an heirloom variety being patented in 1934 by Walter E. Lenk on Belmont Estate, Massachussets. In his patent application, PP93, he states that "The variety is an extraordinarily heavy producer and can be propagated rapidly. If not pinched back this variety blooms almost continuously and readily adapts itself to maximum production of blossoms in the Winter when they are so valuable." Obviously, Mr. Lenk developed it for greenhouse production but it has proven to be a highly desirable Gardenia clone that is still popular today and has proven to be hardy into zone 7. It is fairly similar to Aimee Yoshioka and Miami Supreme in vigor and flower size. In the garden and landscape, expect flowering to be heaviest in spring and summer with some repeat flowering into fall on mature plants. Item# 12299

Blue Empire™ Bluebeard, Spiraea, Caryopteris

Caryopteris x Blue Empire™ 'Elst01' PPAF

Boasting bigger blue and more beautiful whorled clusters of nectar rich tubular flowers in tall wands that extend well above the gray-green foliage and last for weeks in summer. Blue Empire™ Bluebeard or Caryopteris was selected for its noticeably larger and longer lasting clusters of flowers as well as for its nicely compact habit further highlighting the tall candles of flower clusters. In zones 5-6 Bluebeard tends to act more like a clump forming die-back perennial and becomes more shrub-like where winters are milder, although, it benefits from hard late winter or early spring pruning since it flowers on new growth. Bluebird Smooth Blue Aster

Symphyotrichum laevis 'Bluebird'

Masses of 1" wide blue to violet blue daisies with a yellow eye seemingly cover up this perennial in late summer and fall providing nectar for pollinators including bees and migrating Monarchs. Bluebird Smooth Blue Aster, a selection of Symphyotrichum laeve (previously Aster laevis), was the top rated aster in trials at Mt. Cuba Center. It has a naturally upright to vase-shaped, clump-forming habit and grows to 3-4' at flowering but can be pinched in late spring or early summer to produce a fuller more compact plant. The Smooth Blue Aster is found throughout much of the US and into Canada. Provide a well-drained, average to semi-dry soil in full sun conditions for optimum vigor and flowering although it is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions. In semi-shade it may require staking. Images courtesy of North Creek Nurseries, all rights reserved. Item# 12247

Grows To: 4-8"H x 18-24"W, space at 12" for groundcover
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny

The widely flaring deep blue-purple fan shaped flowers open from tubular buds, and are very reminiscent of Scaevola or Half-Flower, open singly and in clusters held at the growing tips as well as in the leaf axils attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The 5-lobed flowers of Blue-Lips, Sclerochiton harveyanus, are produced most heavily throughout the warmer months of the year. This is a shade tolerant naturally spreading to scandent (vine-like) evergreen tropical shrub with rounded, glossy deep green foliage. Blue-Lips is considered to be frost resistant but not freeze tolerant and it is easily maintained as a shrub form for containers, including hanging baskets, in and around larger growing shade-loving tropicals in the garden as well as on a shaded porch or patio. Provide it with an average moist, acidic to neutral, well-drained soil in a site that receives at least some cool morning sunlight or filtered sunlight for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12268

Although this vine produces the typical pale pink trumpets with darker pink throats that are common to this species, flowering is just a bonus as the beautifully variegated foliage steals the show! The dark green glossy foliage is heavily edged, splashed, and flecked with soft yellow on new growth that ages to a creamy white at maturity. Charisma Variegated Pink Bower Vine is a naturally evergreen, twining, tropical vine that makes a fantastic statement on a trellis or other support and unlike some variegated plants it can handle full hot summer sun without burning. Where not hardy it can be easily maintained on a small 3' high or larger trellis but it is vigorous enough to cover a 12-15'H arbor or can spread to 30' across on a 6'H fence. Chinese Parrotia

Parrotia subaequalis, Hamamelis subaequalis, Shaniodendron subaequalis

This rare and magnificent member of the Witchhazel family, Hamamelidiceae, is a close kin to the more widely grown Persian Ironwood, Parrotia persica, but offers better cold hardiness, improved heat tolerance, brilliant red long-lasting fall color, better wind resistance, excellent disease and pest resistance, and it tends to be faster growing. The Chinese Ironwood, Parrotia subaequalis, develops into a multi-trunked, naturally vase-shaped to rounded, deciduous large shrub to small tree growing to 15-30' high. The beautiful exfoliating bark in shades of green, tan, and white and on mature trunks add another season of interest while the clusters of small Witchhazel-like red winter to early spring flowers are hardly noticeable. The fall color of the Chinese Ironwood starts out maroon and deepens to an intense glowing red that lasts for weeks whether grown in sun or shade. It is considered to be drought resistant but should be provided with average moisture until well-established. Item# 12265

Cinderella Swamp Milkweed, Pink Milkweed

Asclepias incarnata 'Cinderella'

Large deep rose rounded clusters of buds open to show off the contrasting lighter pink to white 'eye' and are lightly scented of vanilla for venturesome noses. Cinderalla Swamp Milkweed, a selection of our native Asclepias incarnata, has a naturally upright habit reaching about 4' when flowering begins. This is one of the easier to grow native milkweeds and it slowly spreads by rhizomes but still plays well with other garden perennials. It is native to moist habitats and is quite happy in low areas of the garden, as part of the rain garden complex as well as in more naturalistic moist prairies and meadows. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the plant is utilized as a host to the Monarch butterfly. Provide a full to mostly sunny site and beyond its preference for moisture it is fairly adaptable. Images courtesy of Walter's Gardens, Inc., all rights reserved. Item# 12253

Climbing Aster, Carolina Climbing Aster

Ampelaster carolinianus, Aster carolinianus, Symphyotrichum carolinianum, Virgulus carolinianus

Masses of 1"+ wide light purplish pink fragrant daisies with bright yellow centers are produced over several weeks beginning in late summer and fall adorn the climbing and arching stems of this unusual native perennial. The Climbing Aster, Ampelaster carolinianus, is an easy to grow small, vine-like, clump forming native perennial found in moist sites mainly in Florida but also in South Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi and maybe extirpated (extinct in that area) in North Carolina. Even though it is found in moist areas it does quite well in average moist, well-drained soils and prefers a full to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. The climbing stems are deciduous in areas that experience hard freezes but readily regrow each spring. In mild winter regions, like its native Florida, it may remain evergreen flowering much of the year on the previous year's growth. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and other garden beneficials. Item# 12350

Grows To: 6-12'H space about 3' or more apart, may also be used as an informal groundcover
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade, Part sun

The large rounded clusters of deep red-orange trumpet shaped flowers with a starkly contrasting sunny yellow throat are produced between early winter and midspring and are held atop sturdy dark green stems above and among the glossy, dark green, wide arching foliage. The Clivia or Kaffir Lily, Clivia miniata, is an easy to grow tropical, naturally evergreen, shade loving, clump-forming herbaceous perennial that readily adapts to being grown indoors over winter where it should be allowed to become moderately dry between waterings. This 6-8 week dry period in fall and winter along with temperatures below about 50oF are required to induce bud and flower development on mature plants for winter and spring flowering. Water them too much in winter and it may be at the expense of flowers but they readily wilt to let you know when water is needed and soon straighten back up once moisture is available. Provide the Clivia with a well-drained, fertile, average moist soil and a spot out of direct sunlight for optimum vigor and flowering. There neat dark green foliage offers a tropical look even when not in flower and they could easily be grown for the foliage alone. Item# 12444

The deep green 4-angled succulent stems are tipped with deep green fuzzy palmate grape or cucumber-like foliage that soon becomes deciduous. The Cucumber Cactus, Cissus quadrangularis, is an easy to succulent herbaceous vining to trailing plant whose stems can potentially grow to 5-15' long if a support is provided but is easily kept as a smaller hanging basket or container plant. It produces clusters of small green to yellowish flowers that are followed by grape-like clusters of red to black berries. This unusual succulent is drought resistant and is quite adaptable to growing conditions from full sun to light shade as well as very acidic to very alkaline soils, although, it does require good to excellent drainage and should never be soggy wet. The Cucumber Cactus has been used medicinally,as food, and as fiber in its native tropical Asia and Africa. If stems happen to break off they will readily root. Item# 12438
