In late summer and fall these plants are covered with dark-eyed golden yellow 2-3" wide daisies that sit atop sturdy stems with the flowers providing pollen and nectar for smaller pollinators and other garden beneficials. Blackjack Gold Brown-Eyed Susan offers more flowers over a longer period on sturdy disease resistant plants with improved vigor on longer-lived plants. It received exceptionally high marks in trials at UGA in 2019. This is a heat and sun-loving, deer and rabbit resistant native well-suited to both the garden and landscape as well as in naturalistic settings. The Brown-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia triloba, readily reseeds on exposed soils but is not aggressive or difficult to control. It prefers a full to mostly sunny position in well-drained, average moist to semi-dry soils. Ripened seedheads offer food for songbirds and small mammals. Item# 12319

Blue Empire™ Bluebeard, Spiraea, Caryopteris

Caryopteris x Blue Empire™ 'Elst01' PPAF

Boasting bigger blue and more beautiful whorled clusters of nectar rich tubular flowers in tall wands that extend well above the gray-green foliage and last for weeks in summer. Blue Empire™ Bluebeard or Caryopteris was selected for its noticeably larger and longer lasting clusters of flowers as well as for its nicely compact habit further highlighting the tall candles of flower clusters. In zones 5-6 Bluebeard tends to act more like a clump forming die-back perennial and becomes more shrub-like where winters are milder, although, it benefits from hard late winter or early spring pruning since it flowers on new growth. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established and prefers a sunny site in a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Images courtesy of North Creek Nurseries, all rights reserved. Bluebird Smooth Blue Aster

Symphyotrichum laevis 'Bluebird'

Masses of 1" wide blue to violet blue daisies with a yellow eye seemingly cover up this perennial in late summer and fall providing nectar for pollinators including bees and migrating Monarchs. Bluebird Smooth Blue Aster, a selection of Symphyotrichum laeve (previously Aster laevis), was the top rated aster in trials at Mt. Cuba Center. It has a naturally upright to vase-shaped, clump-forming habit and grows to 3-4' at flowering but can be pinched in late spring or early summer to produce a fuller more compact plant. The Smooth Blue Aster is found throughout much of the US and into Canada. Provide a well-drained, average to semi-dry soil in full sun conditions for optimum vigor and flowering although it is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions. In semi-shade it may require staking. Images courtesy of North Creek Nurseries, all rights reserved. Item# 12247

The widely flaring deep blue-purple fan shaped flowers open from tubular buds, and are very reminiscent of Scaevola or Half-Flower, open singly and in clusters held at the growing tips as well as in the leaf axils attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The 5-lobed flowers of Blue-Lips, Sclerochiton harveyanus, are produced most heavily throughout the warmer months of the year. This is a shade tolerant naturally spreading to scandent (vine-like) evergreen tropical shrub with rounded, glossy deep green foliage. Blue-Lips is considered to be frost resistant but not freeze tolerant and it is easily maintained as a shrub form for containers, including hanging baskets, in and around larger growing shade-loving tropicals in the garden as well as on a shaded porch or patio. Provide it with an average moist, acidic to neutral, well-drained soil in a site that receives at least some cool morning sunlight or filtered sunlight for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12268

Spike-like clusters of deep red ball-shaped buds uncurl into deep red hooked flowers that are produced from spring to early summer all the while attracting hordes of hummingbirds and some larger bees. Bonfire Grevillea is a naturally evergreen subtropical shrub with fine, almost needle-like, deep blue-green foliage suitable for use as a specimen plant or informal hedge or screen. Grevillea are normally somewhat xeric but Bonfire has proven to be wonderfully tolerant of high humidity and average moist soils in the Houston, Texas area and will need little supplemental water once well-established in the garden or landscape. It also makes an easy, low-maintenance and forgiving container specimen that can be overwintered indoors where not hardy. Grevilleas may also be utilized as cut flowers. Do not use phosphorous containing fertilizers, especially in soil-less potting mixes and soils low in Iron. Item# 12638

Although this vine produces the typical pale pink trumpets with darker pink throats that are common to this species, flowering is just a bonus as the beautifully variegated foliage steals the show! The dark green glossy foliage is heavily edged, splashed, and flecked with soft yellow on new growth that ages to a creamy white at maturity. Charisma Variegated Pink Bower Vine is a naturally evergreen, twining, tropical vine that makes a fantastic statement on a trellis or other support and unlike some variegated plants it can handle full hot summer sun without burning. Where not hardy it can be easily maintained on a small 3' high or larger trellis but it is vigorous enough to cover a 12-15'H arbor or can spread to 30' across on a 6'H fence. Cherry Lips Salvia, Autumn Sage

Salvia 'Dysceri' PBR

As sexy as Hot Lips but in an all new shade! The spikes of two-lipped tubular bright white flowers are tipped with a broad band of deep cherry red at the tips of the petals creating a stunning contrast. Flowers may be solid cherry red when the weather is cool and dreary but quickly revert to their two-toned splendor with a little sunshine. Cherry Lips Salvia begins flowering in late spring or early summer and continues into fall, all the while attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. A hybrid of the two native species S. greggii and S. microphylla, a.k.a S. x jamensis, this sunloving Sage develops into a naturally rounded, shrub-like perennial that may remain evergreen in mild winter climates, like zones 9B-10, but acts like a die-back perennial where temperatures fall much below about 30oF. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in well-drained, average moist, fertile soils for maximum flower power. Item# 12471

Chinese Parrotia

Parrotia subaequalis, Hamamelis subaequalis, Shaniodendron subaequalis

This rare and magnificent member of the Witchhazel family, Hamamelidiceae, is a close kin to the more widely grown Persian Ironwood, Parrotia persica, but offers better cold hardiness, improved heat tolerance, brilliant red long-lasting fall color, better wind resistance, excellent disease and pest resistance, and it tends to be faster growing. The Chinese Ironwood, Parrotia subaequalis, develops into a multi-trunked, naturally vase-shaped to rounded, deciduous large shrub to small tree growing to 15-30' high. The beautiful exfoliating bark in shades of green, tan, and white and on mature trunks add another season of interest while the clusters of small Witchhazel-like red winter to early spring flowers are hardly noticeable. The fall color of the Chinese Ironwood starts out maroon and deepens to an intense glowing red that lasts for weeks whether grown in sun or shade. It is considered to be drought resistant but should be provided with average moisture until well-established. Item# 12265

Climbing Aster, Carolina Climbing Aster

Ampelaster carolinianus, Aster carolinianus, Symphyotrichum carolinianum, Virgulus carolinianus

Masses of 1"+ wide light purplish pink fragrant daisies with bright yellow centers are produced over several weeks beginning in late summer and fall adorn the climbing and arching stems of this unusual native perennial. The Climbing Aster, Ampelaster carolinianus, is an easy to grow small, vine-like, clump forming native perennial found in moist sites mainly in Florida but also in South Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi and maybe extirpated (extinct in that area) in North Carolina. Even though it is found in moist areas it does quite well in average moist, well-drained soils and prefers a full to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. The climbing stems are deciduous in areas that experience hard freezes but readily regrow each spring. In mild winter regions, like its native Florida, it may remain evergreen flowering much of the year on the previous year's growth. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and other garden beneficials. Item# 12350

The large rounded clusters of deep red-orange trumpet shaped flowers with a starkly contrasting sunny yellow throat are produced between early winter and midspring and are held atop sturdy dark green stems above and among the glossy, dark green, wide arching foliage. The Clivia or Kaffir Lily, Clivia miniata, is an easy to grow tropical, naturally evergreen, shade loving, clump-forming herbaceous perennial that readily adapts to being grown indoors over winter where it should be allowed to become moderately dry between waterings. This 6-8 week dry period in fall and winter along with temperatures below about 50oF are required to induce bud and flower development on mature plants for winter and spring flowering. Water them too much in winter and it may be at the expense of flowers but they readily wilt to let you know when water is needed and soon straighten back up once moisture is available. Provide the Clivia with a well-drained, fertile, average moist soil and a spot out of direct sunlight for optimum vigor and flowering. There neat dark green foliage offers a tropical look even when not in flower and they could easily be grown for the foliage alone. Item# 12444

The spikes of ball-shaped deep red-pink buds uncurl into deep rosy pink and cream flowers that may be produced throughout the year on mature plants and are sure to attract low-flying hummingbirds and some larger bees. Coastal Gem Grevillea is a very low growing nearly ground-hugging, evergreen, subtropical shrub that tops out at about 1' high and can reach 4-5' feet across at maturity. It makes an easy choice as an evergreen groundcover in tough situations where hardy or add it to rock and xeric gardens for a long-flowering specimen plant. Coastal Gem Grevillea is one of the few US hybrids and was developed at the University of California's Santa Cruz Arboretum and has proven to be cold hardy well into zone 8. It is tolerant of full sun to part sun conditions and needs little supplemental water once well-established in the garden and landscape. Grevilleas can be maintained as container plants where not hardy and the flowers make long-lasting cutflowers. Do not use phosphorous containing fertilizers, especially in soil-less potting mixes and soils low in Iron. Item# 12639

Grows To: 1'H x 4-5'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade, Part sun

A broad stripe of contrasting sunny yellow runs down the center of each of the blue-green to green sword-shaped leaves creating a year round splash of color adding red, pink, and purple tinges in winter. Color Guard Yucca is a selection of the native Yucca filamentosa, or Adam's Needle, and develops into a low rounded mass of evergreen foliage on a deer, heat, and drought resistant plant eventually reaching about 2'H x 3'W. It may eventually produce small offsets colonizing the area under good conditions. This tough as nails plant makes a colorful, low-maintenance, reliable, evergreen addition to the garden and landscape and can also be used to good effect as low-maintenance and forgiving container specimens. Adam's Needle is found throughout much of the eastern and central US and as far west as Kansas and is common component in the Longleaf Pine understory.
