Large rounded clusters in shades of deep pink to near red (alkaline or no Aluminum), dark purple (neutral to acid), to near indigo(very acid) depending on soil acidity and the availability of Aluminum. Merrit's Supreme Bigleaf Hydrangea begins flowering early and the long lasting flower clusters mature into purple, red, and green shades. This is a compact growing Hydrangea with strong sturdy stems originally developed as a florist's Hydrangea but it has proven to be a reliably hardy, small to medium-sized deciduous shrub for the garden and landscape. Merrit's Supreme also makes an easy and low-maintenance container specimen and can be overwintered indoors outside of its hardiness range. The large glossy deep green foliage is disease resistant. Provide a moist, well-drained, fertile soil in an area that receives morning sun and shade during the hottest portion of the day for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12347

Michaele Lux Evergreen Azalea (Aromi)

Rhododendron x 'Michael Lux'

Rich purplish-pink, ruffly edged, nearly 3" wide flowers with a deep red-purple blotch and darker flecking are produced in midspring and are held against a foil of medium to coarse-textured foliage with the flowers attracting bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and curious passersby. Michaele Lux Evergreen Azalea is an unusual and uncommon Aromi hybrid that develops into a small to medium-sized, densely branched shrub. Azaleas do best in average moist, acidic soils that are rich in organic matter but have good to excellent drainage and should be top dressed with an organic mulch such as pine straw and pine bark. We recommend using a slow-release, non-burning fertilizer that is labeled for acidic loving plants. Mole Poblano Mexican Chocolate Scarlet Sage

Salvia gesneriflora 'Mole Poblano'

Huge, deep orange-red tubular flowers open from dark tinged calyxes and 8-12" long spikes in summer and fall, when grown as a perennial, to potentially year round under warm tropical conditions attracting hummingbirds for miles! Mole Poblano Mexican Chocolate Scarlet Sage, a selection of Salvia gesneriflora, is more compact and flowers much longer than its parent growing to about 6-7' high and wide. This giant growing Salvia, the species is reported to grow over 20' high, is a shade tolerant, herbaceous to shrub-like tender perennial Salvia that is adorned with fragrant, large heart-shaped, fuzzy, quilted foliage and is anecdotally root hardy into zone 8A. Its only real drawback is that it should be grown in a sheltered area protected from strong winds and heavy rains as the stems are subject to breakage. It can be pruned to help keep the plant shorter, stronger, and fuller. Provide Mole Poblano Salvia with a moist to average moist, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and continuous flowering. Item# 12583

In spring to early summer clusters of rich rosy pink flowers are produced atop 18-24" high sturdy stems providing a feast for butterflies and hummingbirds. Morris Berd Smooth Phlox, a highly disease resistant selection of Phlox glaberrima or P. carolina depending on the source, is a clump-forming, slowly spreading rhizomatous native perennial that readily develops into a dense groundcovering mass of foliage and stems. This sunloving perennial is decidous in the colder portions of its range but may remain evergreen with purplish winter foliage in warmer winter regions. This easy to grow Phlox has proven to be highly resistant to powdery mildew and was in the top four in trials both at Mt. Cuba Center and the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Mountain Gordlinia

x Gordlinia grandiflora

The large, up to 5" wide, white, flattened to cupped, sweetly fragrant flowers are centered by a boss of nicely contrasting egg-yolk yellow stamens with flowering beginning in early to midsummer and continuing until late summer. A cross-generic hybrid of the native Franklinia and Gordinia, the Mountain Gordlinia, x Gordlinia grandiflora, is a semi-evergreen small tree to multi-trunked large shrub with red to orange fall color that continues through winter on any retained foliage. It is a little more vigorous and is considered to be slightly easier to grow than its parents but still needs a quality loamy soil, rich in organic matter with consistent moisture and an organic mulch over the root zone. Provide afternoon shade, especially in hot summer climates. Still new to horticulture, the Mountain Gordlinia is the result of hybridization work by Tom Ranney and Paul Fantz in 2003 aiming for a more disease resistant, longer lived, and more reliable garden plant with all the great qualities of the parent species. You can read the scientific article about their work at the following link on the NCSU extension website: https://mcilab.ces.ncsu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/ranney-and-fantz-2006.pdf?fwd=no. Rounded clusters of fragrant creamy white nectar rich flowers are produced atop spring's new growth and from the axils and are held against a foil of deep green foliage. The New Jersey Tea, Ceanothus americanus, is a small growing, naturally compact and rounded shrub typically found in deep well-drained sandy soils in our area of Louisiana in full sun to partly shaded sites. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; foliage and stems are utilized by various species of Blues (a tiny butterfly) caterpillars and are browsed by White Tail Deer; and the seeds attract Wild Turkey, Quail, and other seedeaters. As the name implies, this mintily fragrant foliage of New Jersey Tea was used as a tea substitute around the time of the Boston Tea Party and during the Revolutionary War. Excellent drainage will be key to the plant's longevity. Item# 12395
