With honey sweet amber flesh and a lightly tart yellow green outer skin the Blanche Fig (its original name according to Dr. Ira Condit) has long been a favorite for fresh eating or drying. A vigorous fig that produces even in areas with short growing seasons it is known to produce two good crops where summers are longer. In the Southern US it is known as the Lemon Fig and is popular in the Northwest and California for home orchards where it is known as White Marseille or Lattarula. Alma, bred by the Texas ARS, produces a large crop medium to large pear shaped to rounded green fruit that ripens to yellow or bronze. The amber to pink flesh of Alma is considered to be excellent with a rich and very sweet flavor. The small eye is filled with honeydew and is highly resistant to spoiling making this a good choice for the South and Southeastern US. Alma bears fruit at a young age. One of the most popular and commercially important Olive varieties, Arbequina is semi-dwarf Olive tree that begins bearing at a fairly young age under container culture and takes slightly longer when planted in the garden. Introduced to Spain in the 1600's from Palestine, it has become one of the most popular commercial and home garden varieties that is excellent for both eating and for the exceptionally high quality oil it produces. The brown colored olives are small to medium sized when mature. Olives make beautiful evergreen additions to the garden and landscape with their narrow blue-green foliage with a silvery reverse. Use the Arbequina Olive Tree as a large shrub, small tree, or as a screen or enjoy it as a container plant or bonsai specimen. Provide ample sunlight and a well-drained soil. Arbequina Olive has long been touted as being self-fertile but recent studies seem to contradict that (see "Olives for Your Florida Landscape" from the University of Florida Extension to learn more). The Beall Fig produces a heavy crop of dark purple to maroon, pear shaped to flattened figs with an amber pulp with a moderately sweet to very sweet, rich flavor that are excellent for fresh eating. An excellent choice for the South as well as California. This was a chance seedling discovered in California in the 1920's. It is known to produce a breba crop in mild climates and is a vigorous and productive tree. Item# 9917.

The sweet dark figs of Mission are the number one favorite for drying. Mission is one of the most widely grown figs in California producing heavy crops of medium to large dark purplish-black pear-shaped fruit with a rich, sweet strawberry red pulp. Good fresh or preserved. Black Mission is self-pollinating and may produce a light breba crop. A good choice for the South as well. The small eye makes it resistant to spoiling. Item # 832.

 

The 2-3" wide dark eyed daisies are composed of deep golden yellow rays that surround the dark brown to black cones are produced in late spring to summer (depending on your zone). The flowers attract bees and other small pollinators and the seed heads attract songbirds. The Black-Eyed Susan is an annual - atleast in our area, biennial, to short-lived perennial with dark green hairy foliage that adorns well-branched plants and each plant can produce 20-30 or more flowers. This is a widespread species found along roadsides, meadows and prairies, savannas, and in open Longleaf Pine forests mainly in soils with average or better drainage. The Black-Eyed Susan is a common addition to seedmixes and readily reseeds on exposed soils, although it is not an aggressive species. Item# 11725
