Salt Tolerant Plants

Find plants that are suitable for planting in coastal gardens and landscapes. These are salt resistant plants and some are more tolerant that others to both salt spray as well as soil borne salts.

The arching spikes of 1" long, velvety, tubular, purple flowers emerge from long lasting, velvety, purple calyxes in late summer and into fall, and potentially spring where plants are protected from freezing temperatures, attracting Monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. Midnight Mexican Bush Sage, a selection of Salvia leucantha, is a multi-stemmed, clump forming and slowly spreading perennial whose 3-4' high, upright to slightly arching stems are cloaked in velvety, narrow lance-shaped, green to gray-green foliage that adorns the young white stems. This is a heat and sunloving, salt tolerant, and deer proof plant that typically does best in an average moist, well-draining soils but are somewhat drought resistant once fully established. Its uniform habit lends it to use in formal to informal garden and landscape settings as well as medium to large containers. It is considered reliably hardy in zones 8-10 and it can be enjoyed as an annual in colder winter regions. In areas that experience hard freezes, plant out as early in the growing season as possible to ensure a strong crown before frost arrives and a breathable winter mulch and excellent drainage will further help to ensure winter survival. Selected as a Texas Super Star© Plant and as an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. The common name Muck Sunflower somehow seems less than up to the task for a plant that has the potential to provide such a brilliant show of color that begins in late summer and lasts into fall. Loose clusters of 2-3" wide brilliant golden yellow sunflowers are poised on tall stems adorned with rich deep green lance-shape foliage. Depending on moisture levels and fertility this vigorous, native, perennial, fall sunflower may reach up to 8' high. To create fuller, sturdier, and shorter plants tip the Muck Sunflower in late spring. A single tip pruning in late spring will keep them fuller and bushier as well as causing them to produce more flowers than vertical growth. Our plants are seedling grown and originated from a collection in southwestern Louisiana. Caterpillar host: Milbert's Tortoiseshells. Item# 10872.
