Salt Tolerant Plants

Developed at LSU by Dr. Ed O'Rourke and company for fig production in the hot humid South, LSU Gold produces large flattened green figs that ripen to greenish yellow, yellow, or yellow blushed with red. The flesh is pink to amber and is very sweet with excellent flavor. The open eye of LSU Gold is typically filled with honeydew making it fairly resistant to souring and it is also split resistant. Produces a good breba crop and is very productive and vigorous. One of John's top 3 favorites.Item# 831. 

LSU Purple produces medium sized dark reddish-purple, generally pear shaped figs with amber to strawberry pulp with a mild sweet flavor. Developed by Dr. Ed O'Rourke at LSU for disease and nematode resistance as well as the hot and humid Southern climate, it produces a breba crop and a large main crop providing fruit over a long season. This large flowered Magnificent Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow boasts larger 1.5-3" purple blooms which last for 3-4 days slowly changing from purple, thru lavender, to white and may be found in flower throughout much of the year under good conditions. A more vigorous growing and larger leaved variety with rounded leaf tips and rich medium to dark green foliage. Evergreen in the mildest climates. Item# 498.

Magnolia or Brunswick produces a good crop of medium to large bronze to purple figs with good quality pink to amber flesh with tiny seeds and open eye. The fruit ripens over a long season. Magnolia is considered a good choice for the drier portions of the South and Southwestern US. Item# 1113.

Magnolia Willis Sealy, or Mont Blanc, produces fragrant, double white blossoms in profusion throughout summer. A vigorous and large growing Oleander, particularly in mild climates, Magnolia Willis Sealy has excellent cold hardiness and is likely the most reliably white for cooler climates. In mild winter climates consider growing this as a small evergreen tree for a beautiful effect. Item# 1210.

Large clusters of 1" wide starry golden yellow flowers with anthers that age to a contrasting red may be produced throughout the year under warm tropical conditions. The flowers attract bees and butterflies and if pollinated they are followed by 3/4-1" wide helicopter-like samaras. Maiden's Jealousy, Tristellateia australasiae, is a naturally evergreen tropical twining woody climber with rich green foliage and purplish stems on the growth. It can be grown in the ground in areas with mild winters and can also be grown as a container plant where not hardy. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum flowering. Maiden's Jealousy should be fairly tolerant of soil types as it is a component of Mangrove swamps and coastal forests in Tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia. Item# 12026

3" soft primrose yellow, cornflower-like daisies are born in summer on this durable and reliable, clump forming US native perennial. Stoke's Aster comes highly recommended and its easy to see why with moderate drought resistance, deer and rabbit resistance and it revels in the heat and sun of our southern summers. Plants readily multiply into dense clumps. Super easy and tough. Item# 10487.

Soft primrose yellow, fragrant double flowers are born in relatively large clusters that open over a long period. Mathilde Ferrier or Hardy Double Yellow Oleander is an old favorite and makes an excellent container specimen as well as being hardy enough to grow throughout zone 8 (see more info) and warmer regions. In mild winter climates this oleander often acts like large and vigorous growing shrub that can get large enough to be trained into a beautiful small evergreen tree. Item# 756.
 

The Maypop Passionvine or Passion Flower produces a summer long display of 2-3" wide white, lavender, and purple exotic flowers that are held against medium green tropical foliage. Pollinated flowers are followed by round passion fruit that ripen to yellow and contain a tangy tropical tasting clear flesh that surrounds each of the small black inedible seeds. This easy to grow perennial native vine can grow to 15-18' each year if given a suitable support but it is also happy to clamber along a fence, trellis, or any other support that it can grasp with its strong tendrils. Provide a well-drained soil and a full to mostly sunny position for the best results. The Maypop is the caterpillar host for the Gulf Fritillary and other members of the Longwing family as well as the Variegated Fritillary. Item# 500.

Imagine Celeste on steroids as Mega Celeste produces medium to large figs with a flavor nearly as rich and sweet as its namesake. The large pear shaped to turbinate figs have a dark violet skin with white flesh and a dark purplish-red pulp. The eye is small but open and the figs are resistant to spoiling and splitting. Mega Celeste is known to produce a breba crop. This is a likely, but as of yet unconfirmed, unofficial LSU release from Dr. O'Rourke's breeding program. Item# 9918.

Large clusters of fiery orange-red tubular flowers are produced from summer through fall to yearround in warm tropical climates and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Clusters of shiny black 3/8" fruit develop on pollinated flowers and are utilized by songbirds. When grown in full to mostly sunny conditions the foliage generally has a reddish tinge. The Firebush, Hamelia patens var. patens, is native to the southern half of Florida and is evergreen under frost free conditions and can develop into a medium to large shrub. *We have grown this species in our zone 8B gardens for over 30 years as a quite reliable 3-4' high die-back perennial. Each winter it freezes back to its crown and then returns in mid to late spring to flower through much of summer and into fall. Provide a full to mostly sunny site, although they are fairly tolerant, for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 898

Oh me oh my oh! When Midnight Flare is in flower everyone says where can I get that! It produces some of the deepest and richest, fiery, clear red flowers known in the Azalea world. The 2" wide blossoms seemingly cover up the plant in spring and are held against a foil of deep green, slightly bronze tinged foliage. Midnight Flare Azalea has a naturally medium to small rounded growth habit. Winner of the 2010 Rhododendron of the Year for the Southeastern US by the American Rhododendron Society. Item#10724.

Each petal of these large fruitily fragrant beautiful Lei flowers are a rich dark pink at the edge and fade to a golden yellow toward the center. A beautiful and very free flowering Plumeria and we have to agree with Mike it is one of our favorites as well.  Item # 1086

One of the hardiest Lantana on the market, Miss Huff thumbs her nose at cold weather all the way to zone 7! A wonderfully free flowering Lantana whose clusters of flowers open yellow, fade to orange, coral, and finally near pink and are born from summer to frost. An excellent choice for butterflies! Miss Huff Lantana comes highly recommended by Texas horticulturist and plantsman Greg Grant and is also a 2003 Georgia Gold Medal winner. Item# 9727.

A very unusual, succulent plant whose large, 2-3 inch by 5-8 inch, bluish-green leaves have baby plantlets all around the serrated edges, giving them a dainty, unique appearance. Mother of Thousands often send up a tall spike of bell-shaped, pinkish flowers in early spring, and are extremely easy to grow. Item# 514.

The fragrant triple flowers of this beautiful Oleander are softly colored with pink, peach, yellow, and orange with the colors intensifying under increased temperatures. This is a semi-dwarf Oleander that is suitable for large containers as well as the shrub border. Mrs. George Roeding originated from seed that was said to have came to the US from Japan around 1905.
