Tall spikes of sunny yellow, pea-shaped, bee-pollinated flowers that age to orange with a purplish tinge are produced beginning in mid to late spring with the show lasting for weeks that is aided by the production of secondary flowering shoots. Solar Flare Prairieblues™ Baptisia or False Indigo is a hardy clump-forming taprooted perennial that emerges in early spring with purplish young foliage and stems that slowly matures to the typical light gray green. Baptisias could be considered the Lupine of the South and each will produce more and more flowering stems eventually devoloping into a dense rounded mound of foliage and flowers. Sweet Pomegranate

Punica granatum 'Sweet'  

One of the very sweetest and earliest ripening! The crepe-like orange-pink spring flowers are followed by large, pink to green blushed red fruit that produce pink to pink blushed, exceptionally sweet, and flavorful arils that surround medium seeds and typically ripen in late summer and early fall. Good for both juice, which is clear to light pink, and fresh eating. The Sweet Pomegranate is considered to be a semi-dwarf, multi-stemmed large, deciduous shrub to small tree typically growing to about 10' x 10'. It will fruit and flower best where it receives about 150 chill hours. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in average moist to periodically dry, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and production. Clusters of soft yellow-orange tubular buds mature into medium orange tubular trumpet-shaped flowers that darken as they age. Flowering begins in late winter to early spring and continues cyclically throughout the growing season and finishing up in fall at the end of hummingbird season. Tangerine Princess Coral Honeysuckle, a Louisiana selection of Lonicera sempervirens, is a native, twining, deciduous, woody vine that is one of the longest flowering vines for attracting hummingbirds. The mother plant was discovered during a tour of the Dr. Charles Allen Nature Preserve in northern Louisiana with its namesake noted botanist, author, and retired professor Dr. Charles Allen, Ken and Sonie Milton, etal. Coral or Trumpet Honeysuckle will happily twine through a 6' high chain link fence or up an 8' arbor, trellis, or post. Tall spikes of orange buds open to bright orange flowers with contrasting deep red stamens. The flowers deepen to red, red-orange as they age and are produced in late summer atop the blue-green stalks adorned with smooth, wide tropical looking foliage. Some sources suggest that this is a new species that was collected from Thailand although it resembles Hedychium coccineum. Vigorous and relatively tall growing. Woodland Painted Petals, Flowering Grass

From flattened iris-like bluish-green fans emerge spikes of deep coral 1" wide flowers that have a contrasting splotch of dark orange-red at the base of the three lower petals that acts as a 'bee guide' and the flowers are produced over an extended period in late winter, early spring, to spring depending on your zone. Woodland Painted Petals or Flowering Grass, Freesia laxa, is an easily grown cormous heirloom perennial and RHS Award of Garden Merit winner which readily multiplies via seed to make a loose groundcover. Provide an average to well-drained soil in a full to partly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. Freesia laxa is suitable for container culture as well as in the garden and landscape. Yarai Pseudata Iris

Iris x 'Yarai'  

The pastel yellow falls are heavily overlaid with dark burgundy veining and starkly contrasting deep yellow signals accented by the wine colored standards. The flowers appear to be pastel orange from a distance. The Pseudata Iris is hybrid of the Japanese Iris, Iris ensata, and the Yellow Flag Iris, Iris pseudocorus, combining the vigor, adaptability, and yellow pigmentation of the Yellow Flag with the elegance and refinement of the Japanese Irises. The multi-award winning Yarai Pseudata Iris has a high bud count and is one of the earliest to begin flowering and it flowers over a long period compared to other beardless Irises. Flowering stalks growing to about 24-30" high. Yarai translates to Night Thunder which seems fitting for this cultivar. Zexmenia, Orange Wedelia, Orange Zexmenia, Texas Creeping Oxeye, Hairy Wedelia

Wedelia acapulcensis var. hispida, W. hispida, W. texana, Zexmenia hispida  

Bright orange, 1" wide upward facing daisies are produced from spring to fall atop wispy wiry stems and are held above the deep green, fuzzy foliage attracting a variety of smaller pollinators including bees and butterflies. Zemmenia, Wedelia acapulcensis var. hispida, is a low growing naturally mounding, drought resistant, Texas tough, small native shrub-like perennial that is a mainstay of pollinator gardens from central Texas to the Rio Grande Valley as well as along the southwestern border and into Mexico. It seems to flower best and have the tidiest habit in full sun but can tolerate some shade but it may be at the expense of flowers. Zexmenia generally prefers a well-drained sandy or rocky soil but is adaptable to good garden soils as long as the plants have good to excellent drainage. It also makes a forgiving container plant but again provide sharp drainage. The butterfly in the image is a Western Pygmy Blue. Item# 13085
