Little Ruby™ Dogwood

Double and single dark pink to near red blossoms are produced in early spring on this semi-evergreen (evergreen down to about 15oF), densely branched and compact Dogwood. Little Ruby Dogwood produces deep red tinged new growth and has excellent deep red to maroon fall color that holds through much of winter. Grow this hardy and disease resistant hybrid as a medium to large shrub or train it into a small specimen tree. Little Ruby™ Dogwood is the first release in a line of new hybrid Dogwoods developed through the breeding and selection work of Dr. Tom Ranney and the Mountain Crop Improvement Lab at NCSU. 4-5" wide pure white flowers with a dark burgundy eye are produced in abundance with the show beginning in late spring or early summer and continuing until fall. Lufkin White is a hardy perennial Hibiscus with a compact upright to spreading habit. This cultivar along with Lufkin Red were developed for resistance to leaf spot diseases as well as flower color and their compact upright form by Cecile Pounders and the ARS division of the USDA at McNeill, MS and tested at the Poplarville, MS station for 5 years. Mardi Gras Azalea

Rhododendron x 'Mardi Gras' (Southern Indica hybrid)

The 2-3" wide funnel shaped flowers are deep red at their base with red flecking on the standard (uppermost petal) that spills over into the medium pink central portion of the petals and are broadly edged in a picotee of brightly contrasting white. Mardi Gras is an heirloom evergreen Indica Azalea with a somewhat compact naturally rounded spreading habit and has long been a favorite of ours for the excellent show that it puts on each spring. Dark green medium sized, medium textured rounded foliage creates a wonderful foil for the brightly contrasting flowers. Provide the Evergreen Azaleas with a moderately fertile, well-drained, acidic soil in a site that receives at least 4 hours of direct sunlight for maximum flowering.
