Hummingbird Plants

Spikes of 1/2" long, tubular, two-lipped, deep azure blue flowers have a contrasting bright white bee-guide and throat are produced in late spring or early summer and continue into fall atop the tall wispy stems. The nectar rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Bog Sage, Salvia uliginosa, is a rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial producing a multitude of tall thin wiry stems that can reach 5-6' high in rich fertile moist soils but tends to remain shorter, 3-4' high or so, under average moist garden conditions, which it can tolerate quite well, despite its name, once fully established. it tends to be more restrained under drier conditions as well. Its long flowering season and ease of care have garnered Bog Sage the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It can tolerate full sun in the cooler portions of its range but may be at its best where it receives a little midday shade in areas with hot summer climates. Item# 12906

Beginning in late summer and early fall, and potentially continuing into early spring if not hit by a freeze or hardy frost, the brilliant red, 1" long swollen, tubular flowers with a yellow throat are dangled horizontally on small deep red pedicels (read 'flower stems') above and among the wide, often bronze-tinged, deep green, succulent foliage that adorns the deep red sturdy upright stems. Bolivian Sunset Hardy Gloxinia, not really a 'Gloxinia' but a selection of Seemania sylvatica, is a naturally evergreen, rhizomatous perennial that enjoys light shade, filtered shade, or other 'cool sunlight' conditions in a well-drained, moist to average moist, fertile soil preferably rich in organic matter. It can be utilized as an informal fall flowering groundcover in zone 8B that will continue until first frost or freeze and it also makes an easy porch or patio container plant that can be brought indoors in winter where it should happily flower until about early spring. Spike-like clusters of deep red ball-shaped buds uncurl into deep red hooked flowers that are produced from spring to early summer all the while attracting hordes of hummingbirds and some larger bees. Bonfire Grevillea is a naturally evergreen subtropical shrub with fine, almost needle-like, deep blue-green foliage suitable for use as a specimen plant or informal hedge or screen. Grevillea are normally somewhat xeric but Bonfire has proven to be wonderfully tolerant of high humidity and average moist soils in the Houston, Texas area and will need little supplemental water once well-established in the garden or landscape. It also makes an easy, low-maintenance and forgiving container specimen that can be overwintered indoors where not hardy. Grevilleas may also be utilized as cut flowers. Large dense clusters of deep red bottle-brush shaped flowers are produced throughout the growing season suspended at the ends of the ropelike weeping limbs adorned with deep green glossy narrow foliage. Boyette Weeping Bottlebrush was selected for its continuous display of showy red flowers, where most Weeping Bottlebrush cultivars are spring and fall flowering, and an extreme weeping habit. The 1" long, showy tubular flowers are red to red-orange at their base and quickly fade into bright sunny yellow and are held against a foil of dainty, glossy dark green foliage. Clusters of sunny yellow orchid-like flowers are borne in summer and into fall to yearround under warm tropical conditions on this vigorous twining vine. The Brazilian Golden Orchid Vine, Stigmaphyllon ciliatum, is a naturally evergreen woody twining climbing with dark green arrowhead shaped foliage that has a heart-shaped, or cordate, leaf base and fine bristles along their edges as well as along the sepals. A rosette forming herbaceous perennial to biennial, the Red Cardinal Flower is commonly found along stream banks, marshes, and bogs and will perform well in average to wet garden soils. Masses of bright yellow, 1" long trumpets herald the coming of spring and have a strong Jasmine-like fragrance that is produced in early evening and at night suggesting that they are pollinated by hummingbird or sphinx moths as well as by native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. *It is not a suitable nectar plant for honeybees. Graceful foot-long spikes of fuzzy bright fuchsia tubular flowers are produced from summer through fall and throughout winter under frost free conditions on a mannerly shade tolerant plant with deep green textured foliage. Chiapas Sage develops into a 3' high and wide plant and hails from the Cloud Forests of San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico and should do wonderfully in the humid central and eastern US. It is frost tender but is reported to withstand zone 7 winters if given a breathable protective winter mulch in a well-drained soil.
