Hummingbird Plants

Vivid red tubular flowers emerge from dark colored calyxes on lax spikes from late spring to fall on a compact plant with rich deep green foliage. The two creamy yellow anthers that emerge from the top of the red tubular flowers explain the cultivar name. Diablo Eyelash-Leaved Sage, often shortened to simply Diablo Salvia, makes a great addition to the hummingbird garden or its compact and full habit lends it to use in small to medium sized containers. This neat and free flowering perennial, slowly spreading Salvia hails from Mexico and was introduced by Yucca Do Nursery. Item# 11179

Masses of deep brick red trumpet shaped flowers nearly cover up this vine in spring or early summer just in time for arriving hummingbirds. It's almost like the two coordinate it or something! The red Dragon Lady Crossvine is a vigorous evergreen to semi-evergreen clinging vine(it does so via pads on the end of its tendrils and so is not destructive to brickwork and masonry) that can easily clamber up or along masonry, tree bark, fences, or other structural supports on its own. Crossvines are a low maintenance choice for fences, posts, arbors, and larger trellises. The deep red trumpet shaped flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The foliage takes on purple and burgundy coloration throughout the cooler months when grown in full to mostly sunny conditions. Dragon Lady Crossvine is reported to be a slightly more cold hardy selection and was chosen as the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's Gold Medal Award winner in 2003. Item# 391

Clusters of scarlet tubular flowers with orange throats are produced from late spring to fall on this easy to grow and vigorous Honeysuckle. Dropmore Scarlet is an old and popular selection of Brown's Honeysuckle that is also a hit with hummingbirds and other pollinators. The flowers may be followed by clusters of showy bright showy red berries that are enjoyed by birds and other wildlife. Clusters of fiery-orange tubular blooms are seemingly born throughout the year atop this miniature growing plant and attract hummingbirds as well as larger butterflies. The compact form of the Dwarf Mexican Firebush lend it to smaller spaces and for use in containers. Surprisingly it appears to be just as hardy as the larger form and can be grown as a die-back perennial well into zone 8. Provide a full to mostly sunny position for the best results. Item# 403

1/4" soft red blooms adorn the long spike-like bloom stems from spring to frost. Another of the smaller varieties creating a dense bush with loads of nectar rich flowers for the butterflies and hummingbirds. Dwarf Red Porterweed is the smallest and most compact Porterweed that we offer and it lends itself to use near the front of the border, in butterfly and hummingbirds gardens, as well as in containers. The sweetly contrasting bicolor flowers are composed of two large soft shell pink lower petals and a bright rosy pink tube and hood all emerging from maroon tinged calyxes and spikes. Dyson's Joy Salvia, or simply Joy Salvia, is likely a selection or hybrid of Salvia greggii or Autumn Sage, and develops into a compact rounded plant growing to about 2' x 2' that can be enjoyed as a container plant as well as in the garden and landscape. The brightly colored flowers attract low flying hummingbirds, occasional butterflies, and other pollinators with its nectar rich flowers. Provide a well-drained soil in full to mostly sunny conditions and never keep soggy wet. The large rounded to conical clusters of 1" wide, sweetly fragrant, white, salverform flowers are blushed purple toward their centers and with a purple eye are held atop sturdy 36" high stems beginning mid to late spring and continuing into summer. Earlibeauty® Daughter of Pearl Phlox is a vigorous upright to mounding, slowly spreading, evergreen perennial Phlox that was developed for its excellent disease resistance and vigor, as well as for its earlier flowering season than typical Tall or Summer Phlox, Phlox paniculata, selections. Perfectly suited for formal to informal garden and landscape settings and it can even be worked into naturalistic settings. Phlox are native only to North America and their nectar rich, often fragrant, salverform flowers are butterfly magnets. Clusters of blue to light blue, star-shaped flowers are borne in spring on sturdy stems atop the wide foliage. The Eastern Bluestar makes a wonderful garden addition with a mannerly clump forming habit and excellent pest and disease resistance. Yellow fall foliage color adds to its interest. One of the earliest to begin flowering and an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! Clusters of lilac-pink tubular flowers are produced in abundance beginning in midspring and continuing into fall and are held against a contrasting foil of long-lasting showy deep bronze-red bracts and exceptionally dark green glossy foliage that takes on purple and bronze tones in winter. The flowers of Abelias attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Edward Goucher Glossy Abelia, considered to be a hybrid of Abelia x grandiflora x A. shumanii, has a naturally dense, rounded to vase-shaped habit on this medium-sized, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub. Abelias are known for their toughness and adaptability to a variety of soil types provided they have average or better drainage. Deer resistant, somewhat salt tolerant, and mature, well-established plants are moderately drought resistant. Brilliant orange fading to pink and finally red and burgundy into the eye. The 4-5" flowers just seem to keep coming all summer long on a compact but vigorous enough tropical hibiscus. The starry soft primrose yellow, wavy edged flowers are centered by a deeper yellow star shaped throat that is tinged with orange at its edges and are produced in clusters of 3-4 atop light green sturdy stems in late winter to early spring. Evan's Yellow Amaryllis, Hippeastrum evansiae, is a rare and endangered Bolivian Amaryllis species that readily produces offsets at the tips of the fleshy roots during winter dormancy. It is from a relatively dry region and does best in soils with excellent drainage and will prefer a dry winter rest period of 6-8 weeks prior to flowering. Evan's Yellow Amaryllis is considered to be one of the smallest Hippeastrum species and is a naturally deciduous tropical species. It is reported to be hardy into zone 9B, although, it is possible it will withstand colder regions but we have not yet tried it in the ground. Dense clusters of large pink tubular flowers with a white lower lip are born in late summer and early fall on this easy native perennial. Excellent for attracting bees. This is the latest flowering Physostegia that we grow. The Fall Obedient Plant will readily spread by rhizomes creating a mass of sturdy, 3-4' stems. An easy and reliable native perennial. A single 4-6' high bluish green stalk is topped by unusual, almost alien, green and yellow flowers in summer atop a low rosette of smooth succulent Aloe-like foliage. The yellow anthers resemble a slightly cupped upward facing hand and are situated below the inconspicuous female flowers that develop into rounded capsules filled with black seeds once mature. False Aloe, Manfreda virginica, is an herbaceous perennial whose foliage dies back to the caudex-like bulb in winter and then returns in spring. Even though it is a succulent, it generally flowers best under average moist conditions. Its flowers attract both bees and hummingbirds but is primarily moth pollinated making it a good choice for Moon Moth Gardens as well as in the garden, landscape, as a container plant, and in naturalistic settings. Large, 2" long, bright cherry red, tubular flowers emerge from whorls of burgundy tipped yellow-green calyxes from spring to frost on a semi-compact plant with deep green foliage. Fashion™ Cherry Salvia is similar to the Wish series of Tropical Salvias but has a slightly more compact habit reaching about 30"x30" by the end of summer. It makes an easy, heat and sunloving specimen plant or it can be used in mixed company, as well as providing spring to fall color in the garden and landscape. This Salvia is also daylength neutral and so can flower year-round under warm frost free conditions. Producing large, often branched, clusters of large pink tubular flowers in summer atop sturdy 4-7' high stems with narrow medium green foliage. Adored by Hummingbirds and other long-tonged pollinators. Finger False Dragonhead is a rare species that seems quite happy in average garden settings where it readily multiplies by rhizomes. Spike-like clusters of deep red ball-shaped buds uncurl into fiery red and red-orange hooked flowers that are produced throughout the warmer months of the year to potentially year-round on mature plants all the while attracting hordes of hummingbirds and some larger bees. Fire Sprite Grevillea is a vigorous, naturally evergreen, subtropical shrub with deeply cut, rich green foliage suitable for use as a specimen plant or informal hedge or screen. Grevilleas need little supplemental water once well-established in the garden or landscape. It also makes an easy, low-maintenance and forgiving container specimen that can be overwintered indoors where not hardy. Grevilleas may also be utilized as cut flowers.
