Dense whorls of nectar rich, purple to dark blue-purple, tubular flowers seemingly cover up the upper most portions of the plant for weeks beginning in mid to late summer and continuing into fall. Dark Knight Bluebeard, a.k.a. Black Knight, is a vigorous and easy sunloving free-flowering clump forming shrub-like perennial that quickly develops into a dense mound of fragrant and deer resistant gray-green foliage. In zones 5-6 it tends to act more like a clump forming die-back perennial and becomes more shrub-like where winters are milder although it benefits from hard late winter or early spring pruning since it flowers on new growth. Somewhat drought resistant once well-established and prefers a sunny site in a well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 12117

A Camellia Hall of Fame Award winner! One of the longest flowering Camellias in our garden beginning early in the season with flowers into late season. Debutante produces frilly double (peony form) medium pink 3-4" wide flowers showing few, if any, yellow anthers. This is an exceptionally vigorous Camellia and is considered by some to be one of the few large flowered Japonicas that can tolerate full sun. Item# 3153

Medium-sized, creamy white to very pale pink, formal double, a.k.a. rose or perfect form, flowers are edged in sweetly contrasting deep pink and are produced over an extended period in mid and late season, January to April. The medium to large, semi-double, red to rose red flowers are blotched and marbled with starkly contrasting white and are centered by a boss of contrasting gold tipped stamens atop white filaments. Flowering occurs in midseason, January to February, and the pollen laden flowers attract bees and other pollinators on warm winter days. Dooley Hydrangea produces large mopheads of rich blue or pink, depending on soil pH. This is a vigorous growing, exceptionally cold hardy Big Leaf Hydrangea introduced by Dr. Michael Dirr.Hydrangeas are easy to grow deciduous shrubs that prefer partly shaded areas of the garden with a rich, moist but not wet, soil. Prune immediately after flowering to control size and shape. Provide midday and afternoon shade in hot southern climates. Item# 384

2-3" wide clusters of up to 1/2" diameter, bright white, fully double flowers are produced in early spring all along the softly arching branches just before and during the emergence of the bluish-green, soft-textured new foliage. Double Reeve's Spiraea, Spiraea cantoniensis 'Lanceata', is an heirloom shrub that has long been intermingled with the large type Indica Azaleas for a wonderful spring show. This is a medium sized, 6'x6' shrub with arching branches that when left unpruned looks like a cascading waterfall of flowers. Utilize this tough, easy, and low-maintance shrub as an informal hedge or screen, as individual specimen plants, and as mentioned among large type early flowering evergreen Azaleas. Provide this Spiraea with a full to mostly sunny site in an average to well-drained, average moist, fertile soil for optimum growth and vigor. Masses of white petals fill each flower creating a peony-like effect throughout summer on this old favorite. Rose of Sharon is an easy and rewarding upright to vase-shaped deciduous shrub. 1/2" wide, pure white, double flowers almost resemble tiny white roses and the flowers shine against the foil of very dark green, small, ovate, fine textured foliage. The heaviest flowering typically occurs spring and may produce flowers sporadically into fall under good conditions. The Double White Serissa, Serissa foetida 'Flore Pleno', is a dwarf, naturally evergreen shrub with small fine-textured deep green glossy ovate leaves and a naturally mounding, semi-open habit and plants rarely exceed about 2'H x 2'W at maturity. In the past it has been used as a substitute for boxwood especially when a low clipped hedge was desired. Left to its own devices it may become more open with age and a semi-hard pruning can restore the plants to their former glory. Provide a well-drained, fertile, acidic sandy-loam and an organic mulch form optimum growth and vigor. Item# 390

Very large, bright red to orange-red, loose anemone form flowers typically showing at least some contrasting yellow stamens are produced in midseason, January to February. Ducher is considered by many to be the only white China rose. The ivory to white, fragrant, double flowers are produced from spring through fall and are held against soft green foliage. With a more diminutive and refined habit than many China roses, Ducher is small enough for containers or in the garden. Ducher was selected as an Earthkind rose through the Texas AgriLife Extension service. Item# 9709.

Elegantly cupped fragrant rose-pink flowers are produced non-stop throughout the growing season on this floriferous and disease resistant tea rose. Duchesse de Brabant has an upright to vase shaped habit and makes an excellent specimen or use it in mass or as a hedge to wonderful effect. The dwarf form of it's much larger cousin and native to the sandy and sandy loam soils of much of the southeast US. The Dwarf Pawpaw produces 3-5" green-yellow elongated fruit that eventually turn brown to nearly black when ripe. It is reported to have a banana custard-like flavor, some say that fully ripe fruit of the Dwarf Pawpaw is equal to the Pawpaw, while others firmly disagree. Produces small maroon to greenish flowers flowers in spring. A small to medium-sized, spreading to upright, moderately slow growing, native deciduous shrub. A caterpillar host plant of the Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly. Seedling grown. Plant two for pollination. Item# 10232.

Another excellent native shrub for the landscape! The dense neat mound of deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Walter's Dwarf Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum 'Densa', is a compact, densly branching selection of this southeastern native. This shrub's dense habit lends it to use anywhere a small to medium-sized shrub is desired in the landscape. It is generally evergreen into zone 8A and tends to be deciduous to semi-evergreen in zones 6 and 7. Use this tough native shrub in place of Dwarf Yaupon, Indian Hawthorne, or anywhere a medium-sized, disease resistant, low maintenance shrub or hedge is desired. A winner of the Camellia Hall of Fame Award! The medium-sized, perfect or rose form flowers are fuchsia on the outer petals lightening to light pink in the center are produced in mid to late season or January to April. E.G. Waterhouse, a Camellia x williamsii hybrid, is a vigorous growing large evergreen shrub with an upright habit becoming rounded with age. Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. The large rounded clusters of deep orange and gold buds open to sunny yellow, fragrant flowers that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in early spring atop the bare stems. Earl's Gold Deciduous Azalea, an Earl Summerville hybrid, develops into an upright to rounded, medium to large deciduous shrub well suited to bright woodland settings but will also thrive in full sun under good conditions. Like the Aromi hybrids, the Earl Summerville hybrids show excellent tolerance to the heat and humidity of the Southeastern US. Sometimes still fondly referred to as Wild Honeysuckle Bushes, these nativars will do best in an average moist, well-drained, fertile, acidic soil from partial shade to full sun conditions. An RHS Award of Garden Merit selection. Grown mainly as a tough and disease resistant evergreen hedge adorned with a cloak of deep bluish-green to gray-green foliage with a contrasting silvery reverse but this is also an excellent shrub for fruit production for home use or leave it for the songbirds. Ebbinge's Silverberry is a hybrid Elaeagnus that is prized for its toughness and fast rate of growth as a hedge or screen. It can be maintained as small as 3'H x 3'W but is more commonly maintained at 5-6'H x 5-6'W or allow it to grow to its 10-15'H x 10-15'W naturally rounded mature size. In fall it produces fragrant but not very showy greenish to cream colored, 1" long tubular flowers that ripen in spring into 1" long cylindrical red fruit flecked with silver and with a large seed that is also edible excluding its woody exterior. The fruit is astringent and tart if eaten before being fully soft, deep red, and ripe at which point it makes a wonderful jelly similar to mayhaw or crabapple. Songbirds and small mammals are happy to assist with collection of the ripe fruit. Deer, salt, and drought resistant once well-established requiring mainly good drainage in a full sun to partially shade site for optimum vigor and growth. Considered to be nitrogen fixing. The deep red, semi-double to peony form blossoms of Edna Campbell Variegated are randomly spotted and splashed with brilliant white. Red new growth and may have variegated foliage with a compact habit. Flowers early to midseason. Item# 10660.

One of the earliest to begin flowering and an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! Clusters of lilac-pink tubular flowers are produced in abundance beginning in midspring and continuing into fall and are held against a contrasting foil of long-lasting showy deep bronze-red bracts and exceptionally dark green glossy foliage that takes on purple and bronze tones in winter. The flowers of Abelias attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Edward Goucher Glossy Abelia, considered to be a hybrid of Abelia x grandiflora x A. shumanii, has a naturally dense, rounded to vase-shaped habit on this medium-sized, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub. Abelias are known for their toughness and adaptability to a variety of soil types provided they have average or better drainage. Deer resistant, somewhat salt tolerant, and mature, well-established plants are moderately drought resistant.
