A more consistently evergreen selection of this easy medium sized shrub. The dense neat mound of deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Everleaf Walter's Viburnum is a selection of the southeastern native Viburnum obovatum and its dense mounding habit lends it to use anywhere a medium-sized shrub is desired in the landscape. It is generally evergreen into zone 8A and tends to be deciduous to semi-evergreen in zones 6 and 7. Use this tough and easy native shrub in place of Dwarf Yaupon, Indian Hawthorne, or anywhere a  disease resistant, low maintenance shrub is desired. Evil Ways Butterfly Bush, Buddleja

Buddleja x 'Evil Ways'  

In appropriate LSU colors, Geaux Tigers! Deep purple, fragrant, conicle spikes of flowers up to 8" long are produced beginning in late spring and often lasting into fall and are held against a foil of contrasting gold to chartreuse foliage with the nectar rich flowers attracting a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and the occasional hummingbird. Evil Ways Butterfly Bush is a deciduous, medium-sized shrub growing to about 4-5' high and 5-6' wide by the end of the season. The rounded mass of steel blue narrow sword like foliage is topped by tall spikes of dangling creamy white bell-shaped flowers are produced in spring on mature plants. Excalibur Yucca, a selection of our native Yucca filamentosa, is grown mainly for its steely blue to gray-green foliage that provides a nice contrast to nearby plants. This is a tough as nails, clump-forming, evergreen, small  native shrub that has a naturally rounded habit and even though it is fairly drought resistant it happily thrives in most well-drained soils in a full sun to partly shaded site. Adam's Needle is found throughout much of the eastern and central US and as far west as Kansas and is common component in the Longleaf Pine understory. Large, apricot pink, semi-double flowers have creped outer edges and the boss of gold tipped stamens may or may not have additional petaloids mixed in with it. The large mopheads of Firefly Hydrangea are composed of semi-double red florets that fade to a brightly contrasting creamy white eye. Flowers may be blue to purple in acid to neutral soils with the same contrasting eye. This Hydrangea is reblooming and established plants can flower throughout summer under good conditions. Five-Veined Dogwood, Xiao Lai Mu

Cornus quinquinervis, C. paucinervis  

Clusters of white to yellowish white flowers seemingly cover up the plant in spring and are held against a foil of deep green foliage. Flowers are followed by clusters of black fruit. The Five-Veined Dogwood, Cornus quinquinervis, is an evergreen medium-sized shrub with a spreading upright habit growing about as wide as tall at maturity. This plant is rare in the US at present but is being trialed at SFA Gardens and as JC Ralston Arboretum at present and has shown to be a promising ornamental Dogwood with excellent disease resistance to Dogwood anthracnose. Provide the Five-Veined Dogwood with an average moist soil and full sun to partly shaded site. It is reported to be tolerant of clay and mildly alkaline soils. Flame Camellia

Camellia 'Flame'  

The medium to large, semi-double, fiery flame red flowers centered by a contrasting boss of gold stamens atop white filaments and are produced in midseason, January to February. The pollen laden flowers attract bees and other pollinators on warmer winter days. Flame Camellia is a large flowered Japonica type with a vigorous upright and densely branching habit becoming rounded in form with maturity. In Stirling Macoboy's 1987 Illustrated Encyclopedia of Camellias he describes the flowers as "One of the most vividly colored of all camellias". Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. Fragrant Pathways Gardenia is an exceptionally low growing and spreading form of the Dwarf Gardenia that produces fragrant, double white blossoms in late spring and early summer. The narrow, dark green, finer textured foliage of Fragrant Pathways adds to its interest as it creates a low evergreen groundcover. Considered to be slightly more cold hardy than G. radicans. Elegantly arching, 4-8" long spikes of 1" wide, bell-shaped, fragrant white flowers with contrasting yellow anthers are produced in spring to early summer with the warmest regions flowering earliest. The Fragrant Snowbell, Styrax obassia or S. obassis, is a highly desirable, showy small tree that is initially pyramidal in form but broadens and becomes rounded with age. The large papery, rounded to oval to near heart-shaped foliage can reach 8" long and the beautiful foliage alone makes this plant worth growing. From the moist forests of Japan and Korea, the Fragrant Snowbell will benefit from protection from strong drying winds as well as a moist to average moist, loamy, well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and an organic mulch over the root zone.
