Grey Owl Juniper

Juniperus 'Grey Owl', J. virginiana 'Grey Owl'

Silvery gray-green foliage adorns this broadly spreading but low growing evergreen female Juniper that adorns itself with blue-gray cones each summer that are sure to attract a variety of birds and other wildlife. Grey Owl's low spreading habit and steely gray color lend it to use in the garden and landscape where it contrasts wonderfully with darker colored foliage. It also has bonsai potential. Provide a well drained soil and full to mostly sunny conditions. Dr. Michael Dirr says that this is "Among the best of the shrubby spreading junipers." in Dirr's Encyclopedia of Trees & Shrubs. Grey Owl is often sold as a cultivar of Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus virginiana, and it may very well be, but some, like Dr. Dirr, suggest that it may be a hybrid that includes the Pfitzer Juniper in its parentage. High Fragrance Camellia

Camellia x 'High Fragrance'

Wonderfully fragrant, sometimes compared to Jasmine, Sweet Peas, and Rose, medium to large, pale to medium pink, peony form flowers are born in mid to late season (typically March-April). High Fragrance is a vigorous growing Camellia with a strongly upright to open habit that lends itself to tree forms. Flowers may not produce fragrance until the second day after opening. While the High Fragrance Camellia is considered to be hardy to zone 7, we find that the flower buds are cold sensitive and can be frozen at 10-15oF making this cultivar better suited to zones 8B and warmer or grow it as a container plant where not hardy. In early spring, rich pink cherry blossoms cover the bare stems attracting an array of pollinators with pollinated flowers producing 3/8-1/2" diameter, tart fruit that ripen to a deep purplish red in mid to late spring to early summer. The Hiromi Dwarf Afghan Cherry, a selection of Prunus jacquemontii, is a small deciduous shrub growing to about 3-5'H and 4-5'W with an upright to spreading, bushy habit. The plants are self-fertile and have proven to fruit reliably even in the Deep South with minimal chill hours. The weight of ripening fruit can give the plants a semi-weeping habit. The small cherries are semi-sweet and tart when fully ripe and have a fairly large pit. The fruit, which doesn't all ripen at once, can be eaten fresh or made into preserves or jelly, if you have several plants, or left for the songbirds to enjoy. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in well-drained, fertile soils for optimum vigor and growth. The Hiromi Cherry has moderate drought resistance once fully established in the garden or landscape. It is reported to be a butterfly host plant for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. Item# 10641

Flowers are produced early in the season, October to December, attracting bees and other pollinators. Hiryu Sasanqua Camellia, a Camellia x vernalis hybrid, is a vigorous growing heirloom Sasanqua with an upright, well-branched, spreading habit and medium-textured small, dark green, glossy foliage that can exceed 12' high at maturity. Its vigor lends it to use as a screen, hedge, or specimen plant as well as tree forms. Honeycomb Yellow Butterfly Bush, Buddleja

Buddleja x weyeriana 'Honeycomb'

Semi-conical clusters of golden yellow, fragrant flowers are produced from spring, through summer, and continuing into fall attracting a host of pollinators including bees, butterflies, flower flies, and likely the occasional hummingbird. Honeycomb Butterfly Bush, Buddleja x weyeriana 'Honeycomb', is a vigorous growing, medium to large, deciduous shrub growing to 5-9' high and about half as wide and is adorned with large deep green to grayish green foliage. This is one of the earlier yellow hybrid selections and may still be the best and most reliable of the yellows available on the market today. Illinois Everbearing Black Mulberry

Morus x 'Illinois Everbearing' (M. alba x M. rubra)

The large, 1-2" long x 3/8" diameter, shiny, black, virtually seedless mulberries with a very sweet flavor typically ripen in spring to summer, earlier in warmer winter regions and later in colder regions. The Illinois Everbearing Mulberry, a popular and productive hybrid of Morus alba x M. rubra, is a large and fast growing, deciduous tree with a naturally rounded habit at maturity and growing to about 30-40' high and wide. It reliably produces crops at a young age and is self-pollinating. The fruit can be enjoyed fresh or use it to make jams, jellies, syrups, or wine. Songbirds love the ripe fruit and waves of Cedar Waxwings come through annually to feast on them. Mulberries make an easy and low maintenance fruit tree for homes and gardens. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist, fertile soil with average or better drainage for optimum vigor and production. The bare winter stems are adorned with bright sunny yellow flowers in late winter and early spring attracting mainly bees as pollinators. Once the flowering season is finished this beautiful shrub is adorned with gold, yellow and deep green variegated foliage providing color until autumn when the foliage takes on purple tones until it falls away. The Dwarf Golden Variegated Korean Forsythia was first shared with us by the late great nurseryman Sherwood Aikens of Minden, Louisiana and after much research we believe this to be Forsythia viridissima var. koreana 'Ilwang'. We have also selected the cultivar Solid Gold with solid yellow foliage. This is an easy to grow, low maintenance, compact growing deciduous shrub with an arching, fountaining habit growing wider than tall and maxing out at about 3'H x 3-4'W. Its golden foliage can tolerate full sun but may lighten to cream and yellow but this does not appear to affect the plant's vigor it. Provide a fertile soil with average or better drainage and average moisture. Flowers on and off throughout the growing season. Isola Brunfelsia, or Purple Lady of the Night, is a compact growing hybrid of B. grandiflora x B. americana and is surprisingly rhizomatous to some extent, or at least our plants are. Italian Jasmine, Yellow Jasmine, Himalayan Jasmine

Chrysojasminum humile 'Revolutum', Jasminum humile 'Revolutum', J. reevesii, J. wallichianum, J. revolutum, J. pubigerum, J. pubigerum

Clusters of up to a dozen 1" wide, strongly to lightly sweetly fragrant, rich yellow flowers are produced beginning in spring and may continue throughout summer on well-grown, established plants. The Italian Jasmine, newly classified as Chrysojasminum humile 'Revolutum', is an evergreen to semi-evergreen, large, scandent or vine-like, arching to fountaining shrub commonly growing to 5-7' high and wide. The dark green foliage nicely complement the sunny yellow flowers. The long limber canes of this true Jasmine make it an easy choice for an espalier if desired or they can be headed back to keep the plants smaller and bushier. It is fairly tolerant of growing conditions from sun to part shade but is likely to flower best where it receives ample sunlight. Provide an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil for optimum vigor and flowering. The flowers attract mainly butterflies and pollinating hummingbird and sphinx moths but potentially bees and hummingbirds as well. Its easy and reliable nature has garnered it the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Item# 470

The large, double pink, carnation-like flowers are produced in great abundance all summer long on this easily grown deciduous shrub. The Rose of Sharon, a cold hardy shrubby Hibiscus species, has a naturally vase shaped habit when young but becomes rounded and full with age and it can also be trained into a tree form with careful pruning. These heirloom pass-a-long plants are quite tolerant of most well-drained, fertile soils in sunny sites and are resistant to periodic, short term drought once well-established. Jimmy's Double Pink Althea or Rose of Sharon is a much loved plant that came to us via John's mother's prized Althea bush when Jimmy, their 4 year old son, picked his mother, Bonnie, a flower and she rooted the cutting some 40 years ago and it still graces our gardens to this day.
