Gardenia Martha Turnbull, Rosedown Beauty Gardenia

Gardenia jasminoides 'Martha Turnbull'  

Act I begins in mid to late spring with the plants nearly covering up in fragrant, 2" wide, starry single flowers and is followed by periodic flowering in summer with a fall finale similar to the spring show. Martha Turnbull Gardenia is a wonderfully free-flowering Gardenia that was selected by Greg Grant from seed collected from Rosedown Plantation and named in honor of the garden's owner and horticulturist Martha Turnbull. Cross-pollinated flowers will produce bright orange hips to provide winter interest. 1 of only 5 Monardas to be selected as an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, 1 of the top 10 in Mt. Cuba Center's 2014-2016 Monarda trials, and in the top 10 in trials at the Chicago Botanic Gardens in 1998! The extra large, 3-4" wide, clusters of 2" long, deep red tubular flowers are produced over an extended period beginning in late spring to midsummer, depending on your zone. Earlier in warmer climates and later in colder climates. Gardenview Scarlet Monarda or Beebalm, a hybrid selection of native US species, it is similar in many regards to Jacob Cline, still one of the most popular red cultivars, but has improved resistance to powdery mildew and a slightly more compact habit topping out at 3' high. The fragrant very large 5" wide cupped flowers, when pollinated, produce the largest fruit of any of the Passion Fruits and mature to be 5-6" wide and 8-12" long (wow!). The Giant Granadilla, Passiflora quadrangularis, is a vigorous tropical vine with winged square stems and large oval leaves. It prefers a deep, well-drained, moist to average moist, fertile soil and a full to partly sunny position. High humidity and temperatures of 60oF or more are required for fruit set and pollination. The Giant Granadilla is considered to be self-sterile and so it requires another species or a different clone (ours are clonally propagated), like Passiflora phoenicia 'Ruby Glow', for cross pollination. Up to 12" high spikes of large, up to 4" wide, soft lemony yellow, fragrant flowers with matching stamens and filaments are produced in mid to late summer atop the tall stems reaching up to 9' high. Giant Hybrid Yellow Ginger,a hybrid Hedychium, developed and introduced by Aloha Tropicals in their goal to produce exceptionally large flowers and we are impressed by both the size of the individual flowers as well as the nice honeysuckle like fragrance. It's magnificent height makes it a prime choice for the back of the border or landscape but not too far from a path so you can enjoy its fragrance up close. The flowers of the large type Hedychium gingers can also be used for fresh cut flowers once the flowers of the spike have begun opening. Gone With The Wind Prairie Dropseed

Sporobolus heterolepis 'Gone With The Wind'  

Airy, wispy, fragrant, tan and pink, conicle panicles are held atop the mounds of deep green foliage in late summer with the plants taking on red tones in fall and lightening to beige for winter. Gone With The Wind Prairie Dropseed, a selection of our native Sporobolus heterolepis, is a tough, herbaceous, medium-sized, clump forming, perennial grass with a slightly more compact size than the typical species and growing to about 36-40" high and 24-30" wide. The flowers are reported to have a fragrance reminiscent of coriander. It is deer and drought resistant and is tolerant of sandy and rocky dry soils but will grow in most soils, including clay, that have good drainage. Prairie Dropseed typically does not reseed in garden and landscape settings. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist, well-drained soil for optimum growth and vigor. Hairy Mountainmint, Whorled Mountainmint

Pycnanthemum verticillatum var. pilosum  

Dense clusters of dainty white to lavender tubular flowers top the hairy blue-green to green fragrant foliage in summer. The small nectar rich flowers of Hairy Mountain Mint attract a wide variety of pollinators, and are especially important to native bees. This is a rhizomatous native perennial that will readily spread especially in moist soils. Hairy Mountainmint, Pycnanthemum verticillatum var. pilosum, is native to the northcentral US, mainly Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Arkansas, eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky and as far south as northern Mississippi. It is typically found in moist, calcareous soils but can tolerate drier sites where it is less likely to spread aggressively. Item# 11763
