The 2-3" wide cupped fragrant roses have red outer petals with deep rose inner petals and are produced throughout the growing season on this disease resistant small shrub. This long-loved rose from 1834 bears many names attesting to its prowess as a garden and landscape rose and it is one of the few roses that has proven resistant to chili thrips in Florida. It is very similar to the ever popular Craimoisi Superieur with which it is often confused but Louis Philippe generally has a more compact habit growing to 3-4' high and wide on average and the flowers seem to be more pink in the inner petals. Like all China Roses provide this easy to grow plant with a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist, fertile soil for optimum vigor and flowering though it is fairly adaptable. A excellent rose for hedging, landscapes, and as part of a mixed perennial border. Item# 12300

Minnie Pearl Phlox, Thickleaf Phlox

Phlox carolina subsp. carolina 'Minnie Pearl', P. x 'Minnie Pearl'

Clusters of fragrant pure white flowers are produced atop sturdy 15-20" high stems in mid to late spring providing a feast of nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds. Minnie Pearl Phlox, a selection of our native Phlox caroliniana, begins flowering earlier than Garden Phlox, Phlox paniculata, and is an easy slowly spreading, groundcovering perennial with excellent disease resistance. This plant was discovered along a Mississippi roadside by Karen Partlow and was introduced by Tony Avant of Plant Delights Nursery in 2003. With its easy and reliable nature it has quickly become an enduring native perennial for the garden and landscape as well as part of more naturalistic settings like meadows, prairies, and of course roadsides. Item# 12311

Grows To: 15-20"H and slowly spreading, space about 8-12" apart
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade, Part sun

The large lemony yellow, lightly fragrant, cupped flowers can reach up to 5" across and open from long showy pointed buds that are often tinged red with flowers opening in the evening and closing up the following morning. The flowers are held against a contrasting foil of dark green to gray green, narrow, glossy foliage and the plants are pollinated by Sphinx moths that are sometimes confused with hummingbirds. The Missouri Evening Primrose, Oenothera macrocarpa or O. missouriensis, is one of the most recognizable US native perennial wildflowers and has long been a desirable garden perennial for its showy flowers, toughness, and long season of flowering that can begin as early as midspring and may continue into mid and late summer. It is a clump-forming, taprooted perennial native to the west central US in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, southern Arkansas, and of course Missouri that is typically found in very well-drained, gravelly to sandy to loamy, typically alkaline, often dry soils. For the gardener in other parts of the country it will need excellent drainage in a relatively dry soil in a full to mostly sunny site to do well and it does not like to be crowded. The flowers are followed by large winged seedpods that are sometimes dried and used in cut flower arrangements and the plants may reseed on exposed soils. Item# 12803

Mountain Gordlinia

x Gordlinia grandiflora

The large, up to 5" wide, white, flattened to cupped, sweetly fragrant flowers are centered by a boss of nicely contrasting egg-yolk yellow stamens with flowering beginning in early to midsummer and continuing until late summer. A cross-generic hybrid of the native Franklinia and Gordinia, the Mountain Gordlinia, x Gordlinia grandiflora, is a semi-evergreen small tree to multi-trunked large shrub with red to orange fall color that continues through winter on any retained foliage. It is a little more vigorous and is considered to be slightly easier to grow than its parents but still needs a quality loamy soil, rich in organic matter with consistent moisture and an organic mulch over the root zone. Provide afternoon shade, especially in hot summer climates. Still new to horticulture, the Mountain Gordlinia is the result of hybridization work by Tom Ranney and Paul Fantz in 2003 aiming for a more disease resistant, longer lived, and more reliable garden plant with all the great qualities of the parent species. You can read the scientific article about their work at the following link on the NCSU extension website: https://mcilab.ces.ncsu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/ranney-and-fantz-2006.pdf?fwd=no.
