Fragrant Plants

Clusters of pure-white, butterfly-shaped, fragrant flowers are produced in clusters in summer atop the tropical looking, rich green foliage and sturdy lush stems attracting both butterflies and the hummingbird-like Sphinx Moths. Cut the flowers and put them in a vase and they can perfume an entire room with their sweet heady fragrance. The White Butterfly Ginger, Hedychium coronarium, is a rhizomatous and slowly spreading, naturally evergreen tropical that acts like a die-back perennial in areas where freezes occur, reliably returning in zones 7B to 10. The Hedychium Gingers typically grow and flower best where they receive at least some direct sunlight for 3-4 hours during the day and generally have the best looking foliage where they receive shade during the heat of the day. A planting on the east facing side of a house, tree or other structure where they receive morning sun is often optimum. Provide an average moist to moist, average to well-drained, moderately fertile soil to keep this easy and reliable heirloom growing and flowering. Item# 1065

Large long-lasting clusters of fragrant, trumpet-shaped, nectar rich, white flowers are produced from mid to late spring or early summer until fall attracting a bevy of butterflies, bees, hummingbird moths, and hummingbirds. The White Chinese Abelia, a selection of Abelia chinesis, is a moderately vigorous, upright to rounded, semi-evergreen to deciduous, easy and durable shrub with a fairly dense branching habit growing to about 6-8' high and wide. The plants are cloaked in glossy, deep green, medium textured foliage that acts as a wonderful foil for the bright white flowers. Abelias make tough, reliable, disease and pest resistant, long-lived additions to the garden and landscape that can be allowed to grow in their natural form, and where we find they tend to flower most profusely, as well as a formal hedge. Provide these easy to grow shrubs with a full to mostly sunny site in a well-drained, fertile, average moist soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 9680

The large pure white football shaped buds open to fragrant white trumpets sitting atop sturdy stems. This vigorous Crinum was generously shared with us by Marc Pastorek of Pastorek Habitats and is similar to Crinum x powellii 'Album' and C. moorei 'Alba' and may be the latter, or a hybrid of it, due to the shape of the medium to light green strap-like foliage. An unusual Camellia that is cherished as much or more for its interesting evergreen foliage than for its flowers. White Mermaid is cloaked in deep green glossy leaves that are 'fish-tailed' or splayed and somewhat split at the ends. This leaf type may also be referred to as 'oak-leaved' or the 'Goldfish' Camellia. It produces medium sized, single, brilliant white flowers with a large boss of golden yellow stamens and are sweetly fragrant. Item# 11345

Pink tinged buds open to 2 ¹/₂-3" wide, ruffled, fragrant, anemone-form to semi-double white flowers with a boss of golden yellow stamens that are produced early in the season in Nov-December. Winter's Snowman Sasanqua Camellia is a hybrid that was selected for its reliable zone 6 cold hardiness, clean white fragrant flowers, as well as for its vigor. This is a naturally fairly large growing evergreen shrub with medium textured, deep green Sasanqua-like foliage that emerges burgundy in spring similar to the Red-Tip Photinia and extending its seasons of interest. Like a Sasanqua, Winter's Snowman can be maintained as a 4-6'H hedge, formal to informal screen, or allow it to grow into a naturally large evergreen shrub to small tree with a naturally upright to spreading habit. Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and a deep organic mulch. The heavily variegated foliage is broadly edged, splotched, and flecked with creamy white and the variegation may also overlay patches of the green creating a silvery look. The young leaves are reddish purple eventually lightening to pink and finally maturing to cream. Not only does this beautifully variegated Sweet Olive look great but it also has excellent flower power with the show of sweetly fragrant clusters of creamy white blossoms beginning in fall and continuing into spring. Zephirine Drouhin is thorn-less, fragrant, disease resistant, and shade tolerant, what more can you ask from a climbing rose? 2-1/2 to 3" strongly fragrant, deep pink cupped roses are borne in mass in spring, with some blooms in summer and fall once once established. Being thorn-less, this is an excellent rose to grow on an arbor, a trellis, or in an area where people will be passing near by and the fragrance will get their attention if the sheer beauty of this rose does not.
