Clusters of fragrant pure white flowers are produced atop sturdy 15-20" high stems in mid to late spring providing a feast of nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds. Minnie Pearl Phlox, a selection of our native Phlox caroliniana, begins flowering earlier than Garden Phlox, Phlox paniculata, and is an easy slowly spreading, groundcovering perennial with excellent disease resistance. This plant was discovered along a Mississippi roadside by Karen Partlow and was introduced by Tony Avant of Plant Delights Nursery in 2003. The large lemony yellow, lightly fragrant, cupped flowers can reach up to 5" across and open from long showy pointed buds that are often tinged red with flowers opening in the evening and closing up the following morning. The flowers are held against a contrasting foil of dark green to gray green, narrow, glossy foliage and the plants are pollinated by Sphinx moths that are sometimes confused with hummingbirds. The Missouri Evening Primrose, Oenothera macrocarpa or O. missouriensis, is one of the most recognizable US native perennial wildflowers and has long been a desirable garden perennial for its showy flowers, toughness, and long season of flowering that can begin as early as midspring and may continue into mid and late summer. It is a clump-forming, taprooted perennial native to the west central US in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, southern Arkansas, and of course Missouri that is typically found in very well-drained, gravelly to sandy to loamy, typically alkaline, often dry soils. For the gardener in other parts of the country it will need excellent drainage in a relatively dry soil in a full to mostly sunny site to do well and it does not like to be crowded. The flowers are followed by large winged seedpods that are sometimes dried and used in cut flower arrangements and the plants may reseed on exposed soils. Item# 12803

Mole Poblano Mexican Chocolate Scarlet Sage

Salvia gesneriflora 'Mole Poblano'

Huge, deep orange-red tubular flowers open from dark tinged calyxes and 8-12" long spikes in summer and fall, when grown as a perennial, to potentially year round under warm tropical conditions attracting hummingbirds for miles! Mole Poblano Mexican Chocolate Scarlet Sage, a selection of Salvia gesneriflora, is more compact and flowers much longer than its parent growing to about 6-7' high and wide. This giant growing Salvia, the species is reported to grow over 20' high, is a shade tolerant, herbaceous to shrub-like tender perennial Salvia that is adorned with fragrant, large heart-shaped, fuzzy, quilted foliage and is anecdotally root hardy into zone 8A. Its only real drawback is that it should be grown in a sheltered area protected from strong winds and heavy rains as the stems are subject to breakage. It can be pruned to help keep the plant shorter, stronger, and fuller. Provide Mole Poblano Salvia with a moist to average moist, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and continuous flowering. Item# 12583

Party Lights™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive is one of the hardiest selections of Osmanthus and produces small white fragrant flowers in fall but it is mainly grown for its outstanding foliage color in the garden and landscape and has a nice dense well-branching habit that is sure to make a statement. Party Princess™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive, Kaori Hime Holly Leaf Tea Olive, Osmanthus

Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' (a.k.a. O. heterophyllus 'Party Princess')

Small clusters of sweetly fragrant white flowers are borne in the leaf axils in fall on this tiny delicate looking evergreen shrub. Kaori Hime Holly Leaf Tea Olive ( or recently appropriately named Party Princess™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive ) is delicate looking but should be a tough and easy to grow evergreen shrub with fine textured dark green holly-like foliage that maxes out at about 1/2" long and according to Ted Stephens, who found this Japanese cultivar and introduced it to the US, should have the best cold hardiness of all of the Osmanthus species, most likely zone 6 hardy like its larger leaved parent, Osmanthus heterophyllus. This is an obvious bonsai candidate but it can also be grown as a container plant as well as in the garden in landscape as a hedge or specimen plant. Expect this very dwarf Holly Leaf Tea Olive to have a naturally upright to vase shaped habit but it can be pruned into a low hedge if so desired. Provide a well-drained average moist soil for optimum health and flowering although it is fairly adaptable to soil types. Item# 11646
