NIMBUS™ White Thalictrum, Columbine Meadow-Rue

Thalictrum aquilegifolium 'Nimbus White'

You can see why they named this series NIMBUS™! Dense cloud-like masses composed of hundreds of frilly white flowers are held atop sturdy dark colored stems and the fine-textured Columbine-like bluish-green foliage beginning in mid-spring and continuing into summer. The flowers are followed by lavender-pink seedheads adding further interest. NIMBUS™ White Thalictrum is a clump-forming perennial that was selected for its more compact habit than the species as well as for its denser showier flower clusters. *They are tolerant of full sun in areas with cool summers but may do best with midday and afternoon shade or filtered shade in hot summer climates. We actually grow them under deciduous shade to good effect here in 8B. Meadow-Rue generally prefers a moist, well-drained, fertile soil for optimum vigor and flowering. Flowering may be limited the first season but will increase with each year as the plants become better established. The white, 4-petaled, dogwood-like flowers are produced in midspring on the arching branches and are centered by a boss of contrasting yellow stamens. The Mock Orange, a species of Philadelphus, is an heirloom, deciduous, multi-stemmed arching to rounded, suckering but non-aggressive, medium-sized shrub. Its bare winter stems provide interesting exfoliating bark in shades of deep brownish red and orange and interestingly the buds are protected and hidden beneath the bark. Unlike some spring flowering shrubs, the Mock Orange does not seem to be affected by winter chill and flowers reliably each spring even in zone 9. The Mock Orange is tolerant of some shade but tends to have the fullest densest habit and optimum flowering where it receives at least a half a day of direct sunlight and full to mostly sunny conditions are optimum. Moderately drought resistant once fully established but will look best where it receives average moisture in an average to well-drained, fertile soil. Item# 13026

Ontario Aster, Bottomland Aster

Symphyotrichum ontarionis, Aster ontarionis

Beginning as early as midsummer the branching stems are cloaked in 1/2" wide white daisies with a contrasting yellow eye eventually becoming reddish. The nectar and pollen laden flowers attract mainly smaller pollinators like bees providing an important late summer source for winter stores. The Ontario Aster, Symphiotrichum ontarionis, is a native perennial that colonizes via rhizomes and grows to about 30-40"H. It is found mainly in the central US from coastal Louisiana north to Canada commonly in semi-shaded sites along stream banks, bogs, and similar consistently moist locations. Deadhead once flowering is complete to minimize reseeding if desired but songbirds may enjoy the small seeds if they are left to ripen. This species is very similar to and is often confused with other white flowered late summer and fall flowering asters. Caterpillar host: Field Crescent, Pearl Crescent, Texan Crescent, Roadside Checkerspot, Hoffman's Checkerspot, and American Lady. Onyx and Pearls Penstemon, Beardtongue

Penstemon digitalis 'Onyx and Pearls'  PP32613

The exceptionally dark purple to near black foliage provides the perfect foil for the numerous 2-3' high spikes of light lavender tubular flowers that appear white against their backdrop. Onyx and Pearls Penstemon or Beardtongue begins flowering in late spring to early summer providing weeks of color and a feast of nectar for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Even when not in flower the cloak of dark foliage provides a wonderful contrast for its neighbors. This easy to grow, clump-forming perennial is a selection of our native Foxglove Beardtongue, Penstemon digitalis, and will perform best in a moist to average moist, well-drained soil and a full to mostly sunny site will provide the darkest foliage color. Images courtesy of Walter's Gardens, Inc., all rights reserved. Small clusters of unusual looking, funnel-shaped deep red flowers are tipped with contrasting white and green with the insides of the flowers being streaked and flecked with brown. The flowers are produced in early to midsummer atop 2-3' high stems and attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. The Parrot Lily, Alstroemeria psittacina, is an old pass-a-long heirloom perennial whose rhizomatous habit may be too aggressive for most garden settings but in the right location it makes an easy and rewarding informal groundcover. Alstroemerias prefer an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil and tend to be sturdiest where they receive atleast 4 hours of direct sunlight. *Where summers are hot, consider providing shade or filtered shade during the hottest part of the day. These also serve as long-lasting and popular fresh cut flowers. Item# 12831

Party Lights™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive, Osmanthus

Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘sPg-3-021' (a.k.a. O. heterophyllus 'Party Lights', O. heterophyllus 'Shien')

The bright deep pink flushes of holly-like new foliage and stems slowly matures to pastel pink, yellow, and ultimately a dark green. Party Lights™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive is one of the hardiest selections of Osmanthus and produces small white fragrant flowers in fall but it is mainly grown for its outstanding foliage color in the garden and landscape and has a nice dense well-branching habit that is sure to make a statement. This is a hardy evergreen shrub that will have the densest habit and brightest colors in full to mostly sunny conditions. Party Princess™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive, Kaori Hime Holly Leaf Tea Olive, Osmanthus

Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' (a.k.a. O. heterophyllus 'Party Princess')

Small clusters of sweetly fragrant white flowers are borne in the leaf axils in fall on this tiny delicate looking evergreen shrub. Kaori Hime Holly Leaf Tea Olive ( or recently appropriately named Party Princess™ Holly Leaf Tea Olive ) is delicate looking but should be a tough and easy to grow evergreen shrub with fine textured dark green holly-like foliage that maxes out at about 1/2" long and according to Ted Stephens, who found this Japanese cultivar and introduced it to the US, should have the best cold hardiness of all of the Osmanthus species, most likely zone 6 hardy like its larger leaved parent, Osmanthus heterophyllus. This is an obvious bonsai candidate but it can also be grown as a container plant as well as in the garden in landscape as a hedge or specimen plant. Expect this very dwarf Holly Leaf Tea Olive to have a naturally upright to vase shaped habit but it can be pruned into a low hedge if so desired. Provide a well-drained average moist soil for optimum health and flowering although it is fairly adaptable to soil types. Item# 11646
