White Flowers or Flower Parts

As sexy as Hot Lips but in an all new shade! The spikes of two-lipped tubular bright white flowers are tipped with a broad band of deep cherry red at the tips of the petals creating a stunning contrast. Flowers may be solid cherry red when the weather is cool and dreary but quickly revert to their two-toned splendor with a little sunshine. Cherry Lips Salvia begins flowering in late spring or early summer and continues into fall, all the while attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. A hybrid of the two native species S. greggii and S. microphylla, a.k.a S. x jamensis, this sunloving Sage develops into a naturally rounded, shrub-like perennial that may remain evergreen in mild winter climates, like zones 9B-10, but acts like a die-back perennial where temperatures fall much below about 30^oF. Up to 3/4" diameter, lightly fragrant, dense Sputnik-like flower clusters are composed of numerous small creamy white to light pink, funnel-shaped flowers that are tipped in purple often giving the flowers a lavender cast and the long white styles and creamy white stigmas provide the spikey look. The nectar rich flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year, late spring and often into fall, attracting an array of pollinators. The Chinese Buttonbush or Glossy Adina, Adina rubella, is a deciduous, medium to large, fine textured shrub with a naturally rounded to arching habit and a moderate rate of growth. The very dark green foliage has a mirror like glossiness and creates a contrasting foil for the flowers. Like our native Buttonbush, this plant is naturally found growing along wet areas but has no problems adapting to average moist, fertile garden soils in full sun to light shade. Item# 10035

Huge, rounded, white Hydrangea-like flowers are borne in early spring and last for several weeks. The color show starts with small rounded clusters of apple-green buds and so the Chinese Snowball Bush entertains us for weeks in anticipation of spring. Mature plants will often produce flowers in late summer as well although the best show is typically in spring. These are easy to grow large shrubs with a medium to fast rate of growth and a naturally upright to vase shaped habit when young eventually growing as wide as high once mature. Dense clusters of upward facing, short, tubular whitish flowers are touched with purple or lavender and are accented by large silvery to whitish bracts and are produced over an extended period in summer. The flowers attract a variety of smaller pollinators especially small native bees and flower flies. Clustered Mountainmint, Pycnanthemum muticum, is a native, branching, rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial growing to about 2-3' high and 1-2' wide. This may be the strongest scented of the Mountainmints and the foliage can be used in teas and cooking. Provide a full sun to mostly sunny site in an average moist, fertile soil. Loose clusters of sweetly fragrant white, star shaped blooms are born in mass in late spring and early summer on this vigorous and durable evergreen twining climber. The large creamy white flowers emerge from loose purple-black tinged spikes and calyxes from spring to fall attracting hummingbirds and other garden beneficials. Cool Cream Salvia, a selection or hybrid of the Little Leaf or Mountain Sage, Salvia microphylla, boasts excellent vigor and flower power with flowering beginning early and continuing reliably through summer and into fall. Vibrant red, single Hibiscus blooms bring elegance and poise to the chaos of color brought on by the brilliantly variegated foliage which is randomly splashed in shades of burgundy, red, pink, white, and green. This native perennial Hibiscus boasts large 6-8" wide typically white but occassionally pink flowers with a dark burgundy eye. The Crimson-Eyed Rosemallow, Hibiscus moscheutos, is common in moist and wet areas as the name implies but is tolerant of average moist garden soils but may require extra moisture during dry spells. This is a vigorous and hardy native perennial that can reach 5-7' high but is more commonly found at 4'. The foliage may be used as a butterfly caterpillar host by Hairstreaks, Blues, Coppers, and others. Elegant, pure white, 3" wide hibiscus flowers seemingly glow against the foil of exceptionally dark green tropical foliage. Dainty White Hibiscus is a non-stop bloomer that puts on a show practically throughout the year and barely even slows down only for the shortest and coolest days of winter. The white petals of these medium to large loosely double white flowers exhibit rich pink hearts. This double flowered Hibiscus is a free flowering shrub with a good branching habit. A Tropical or Chinese Hibiscus, it is well suited to container culture or it may be used in gardens and landscapes as a specimen or hedge where hardy. The large, double, pure white, carnation-like to peony-like flowers are produced in great abundance all summer long on this easily grown deciduous shrub. The Rose of Sharon, a cold hardy shrubby Hibiscus species, has a naturally vase shaped habit when young but becomes rounded and full with age and it can also be trained into a tree form with careful pruning. These heirloom pass-along plants are quite tolerant of most well-drained, fertile soils in sunny sites and are resistant to periodic, short term drought once well-established. Clusters of 4-6" wide, double, peony-like flowers open pure white on the first day, change to pink on the second day, and turn near red once they fade creating the tricolor effect. Flowering begins in late summer and fall and can continue for weeks on mature plants. The Double White Confederate Rose, a selection of Hibiscus mutabilis, is a multistemmed, large deciduous shrub to small tree that can grow to 15' x 15' where winters are mild and the stems are not frozen back to near ground level. In zones 8-9, the Confederate Rose acts like a die-back perennial, freezing to near ground-level and returning the following spring and can still grow to nearly 10' x 10' in a single season under good conditions.
