Canyon Creek Glossy Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora 'Canyon Creek'

Clusters of light pink, nicely fragrant, somewhat funnel-shaped to tubular flowers are held against a foil of coppery pink, long-lasting bracts and bright golden yellow foliage beginning in late spring to early summer and continuing into fall. Canyon Creek Glossy Abelia, an open pollinated seedling of Abelia chinense that was selected through Dr. Michael Dirr's breeding program at UGA, is a vigorous growing cultivar with some of the best yellow foliage of any shrub on the market today. The glossy, medium to fine-textured foliage starts out a contrasting coppery red and matures to bright sunny to golden yellow and finally to green in summer providing interest throughout the year and will have the best color where it receives at least a half a day or more of direct sunlight in a moderately fertile to rich soil. Cherry Lips Salvia, Autumn Sage

Salvia 'Dysceri'  PBR

As sexy as Hot Lips but in an all new shade! The spikes of two-lipped tubular bright white flowers are tipped with a broad band of deep cherry red at the tips of the petals creating a stunning contrast. Flowers may be solid cherry red when the weather is cool and dreary but quickly revert to their two-toned splendor with a little sunshine. Cherry Lips Salvia begins flowering in late spring or early summer and continues into fall, all the while attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. A hybrid of the two native species S. greggii and S. microphylla, a.k.a S. x jamensis, this sunloving Sage develops into a naturally rounded, shrub-like perennial that may remain evergreen in mild winter climates, like zones 9B-10, but acts like a die-back perennial where temperatures fall much below about 30oF. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in well-drained, average moist, fertile soils for maximum flower power. Item# 12471

Grows To: 2-3'H x 2-3'W
Outdoor Light: Full sun, Mostly sunny, Part shade, Part sun

Up to 3/4" diameter, lightly fragrant, dense Sputnik-like flower clusters are composed of numerous small creamy white to light pink, funnel-shaped flowers that are tipped in purple often giving the flowers a lavender cast and the long white styles and creamy white stigmas provide the spikey look. The nectar rich flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year, late spring and often into fall, attracting an array of pollinators. The Chinese Buttonbush or Glossy Adina, Adina rubella, is a deciduous, medium to large, fine textured shrub with a naturally rounded to arching habit and a moderate rate of growth. The very dark green foliage has a mirror like glossiness and creates a contrasting foil for the flowers. Like our native Buttonbush, this plant is naturally found growing along wet areas but has no problems adapting to average moist, fertile garden soils in full sun to light shade. Item# 10035

Chinese Snowball Bush

Viburnum macrocephalum sterile

Huge, rounded, white Hydrangea-like flowers are borne in early spring and last for several weeks. The color show starts with small rounded clusters of apple-green buds and so the Chinese Snowball Bush entertains us for weeks in anticipation of spring. Mature plants will often produce flowers in late summer as well although the best show is typically in spring. These are easy to grow large shrubs with a medium to fast rate of growth and a naturally upright to vase shaped habit when young eventually growing as wide as high once mature. Chinese Snowball Bush was selected as a 2006 Georgia Gold Medal Winner! The huge flowers make excellent long lasting cut flowers for a vase as well. Item# 10362.

2-3" wide, sweetly fragrant, double to semi-double flowers are produced in late spring to early summer with good repeat in late summer and fall on a compact plant with deep green foliage. Chuck Hayes Gardenia was selected for its reliable zone 7 cold hardiness, which, at least at the time of its development was unusual in double flowered forms, as well as its neat compact habit growing to about 4-5' high and wide. It is compact enough for containers as well as a small to medium-sized evergreen shrub for the garden and landscape. Gardenias do best in full sun to part shade, the latter is preferred in areas with hot summer climates, in average moist, fertile, well-drained acidic soils. Item# 13190

Considered by many to be the best of the Mountain Mints, Clustered Mountain Mint produces an abundance of tiny whitish tubular blooms touched with purple or lavender in tight clusters held above the attractive bluish white bracts. The bracts are probably more showy than the flowers but the flowers attract loads of pollinators including bees and small butterflies. The foliage is wonderfully fragrant and can be used in teas and cooking. This is a durable and slowly spreading native perennial that flowers throughout the summer months. Item# 10029.

A broad stripe of contrasting sunny yellow runs down the center of each of the blue-green to green sword-shaped leaves creating a year round splash of color adding red, pink, and purple tinges in winter. Color Guard Yucca is a selection of the native Yucca filamentosa, or Adam's Needle, and develops into a low rounded mass of evergreen foliage on a deer, heat, and drought resistant plant eventually reaching about 2'H x 3'W. It may eventually produce small offsets colonizing the area under good conditions. This tough as nails plant makes a colorful, low-maintenance, reliable, evergreen addition to the garden and landscape and can also be used to good effect as low-maintenance and forgiving container specimens. Adam's Needle is found throughout much of the eastern and central US and as far west as Kansas and is common component in the Longleaf Pine understory. Provide a full sun to part sun site in average to well-drained soils. Item# 12628

The dense flat-topped flower clusters are composed of numerous small, white and creamy white flowers and are produced between late spring and potentially into fall atop 24-36" high stems that attract a wide variety of mainly smaller pollinators. Common Yarrow, Achillea millefolium, is a rhizomatous, evergreen, heirloom perennial with fine textured fennel-like, rich medium green, fragrant anise-scented foliage and quickly spreads to create a seemingly weed proof groundcover. It is typically regarded as a poor choice for gardens due to its rambunctious nature but makes an easy addition to naturalistic plantings like meadows, prairies, and roadsides as well as a lawn replacement and a tough and low maintenance groundcover for difficult sites like parking lot islands, provided they have good drainage. It also makes an easy and low maintenance container plant. Provide Common Yarrow with a full to mostly sunny site in lean, mineral soils, like sandy loams, with excellent drainage. Once fully established the plants need little if any maintenance, although, it is said that deadheading the flowers will help to promote repeat flowering from the lower flower stem nodes and to help limit its spread. Constance Elliot Passion Flower, Passion Vine

Passiflora caerulea 'Constance Elliot'

An old and reliable favorite, Constance Elliot Passion Flower produces solid white flowers that shine brightly against the deep green to blue-green foliage.  This is a vigorous growing tropical vine and can easily reach 20' once well-established. This is also one of the most reliably cold hardy Passionvines with foliage remaining evergreen in the mildest 8B winters but dying back to the ground in severe winters and returning readily in spring. The pure white Constance Elliot Passionflower may spread somewhat by rhizomes but it is generally much more tame than the Maypop. Cross pollination may produce tropical tasting tangy fruit that surrounds the dark seeds inside. Click on "More Details and Growing Info" or the image to learn more about growing Passionvines as perennials in containers or in the garden and landscape. Caterpillar host: Gulf Fritillary, Julia Butterfly, Variegated Fritillary, and Zebra Longwing. The large creamy white flowers emerge from loose purple-black tinged spikes and calyxes from spring to fall attracting hummingbirds and other garden beneficials. Cool Cream Salvia, a selection or hybrid of the Little Leaf or Mountain Sage, Salvia microphylla, boasts excellent vigor and flower power with flowering beginning early and continuing reliably through summer and into fall. In areas where hard freezes do not occur, The Mountain Sages may develop a shrubby semi-woody base, while in zone 8 and colder, established plants act more like herbaceous perennials dying back to near ground level and returning in early spring. Enjoy these colorful pollinator attractors in the garden and landscape or as rewarding and forgiving container specimens. Corkscrew Flower, Shell Vine, Caracalla Vine, Snail Vine

Vigna caracalla, Phaseolus caracalla, Cochliasanthus caracalla

The true demand  is for the VIGNA  Caracalla, a favorite of Thomas Jefferson's, the Corskscrew Vine, Snail Vine, or Caracalla Bean produces large clusters of fragrant white and lavender coiling buds and flowers that fade to a creamy yellow just before dropping. The Corkscrew Vine is a vigorous climber that grows from a tuberous, somewhat potato-like, root that it can return from in mild winter climates. The intricate late summer and fall blooming flowers attract a variety of pollinators, particularly larger bees. Item# 373.

There exists a "Corkscrew vine, a.k.a. Snail vine" that looks very similar to the V. caracallas vine, but has no fragrance, and can become a pest.  It is more hardy  of the two.   We do not grow it.
