Lord Byron Viburnum

Viburnum 'Lord Byron' (V. obovatum x V. rufidulum)

Large flattened to slightly rounded clusters of clean white flowers are produced over a long period in late winter and early spring and attract a myriad of pollinators and other garden beneficials. Young stems are deep red to maroon and the foliage is glossy and deep dark green creating a nicely contrasting foil for the white flowers. Lord Byron Viburnum is a hybrid of our natives Viburnum obovatum and V. rufidulum and exhibits the durability and adaptability of both species with a close resemblance to V. rufidulum, the Rusty Blackhaw. Lord Byron naturally develops into a medium to large shrub and its only drawback is that it tends to produce suckers, in our experience, which may be desirable particularly in naturalistic settings. In early to midspring the 18" high scapes are topped by loose clusters of frilly light lavender 1-2" wide yellow-eyed daisies that attract a variety of pollinators and other garden beneficials particularly native bees. Lynn Haven Carpet Fleabane, a selection of our native Erigeron pulchellus, is a tough, shade tolerant, evergreen, rosette forming, rhizomatous groundcover adorned in grayish green foliage that creates a dense near weed proof mat that slowly expands each growing season. It is generally at its best in sunny poor, sandy, rocky, or otherwise well-drained soils and needs little to no care once fully established. It is tough enough to grow right up next to asphalt along roadsides and seems perfectly oblivious to it as well as in dryish partly shaded conditons. In full sun areas it may look its best with supplemental water during dry periods. Erigeron pulchellus is native to basically all states east of the Missississippi River as well as western Louisiana, eastern Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. Images courtesy of North Creek Nurseries, Inc., all rights reserved. Item# 13317
