White Flowers or Flower Parts

Masses of white petals fill each flower creating a peony-like effect throughout summer on this old favorite. Rose of Sharon is an easy and rewarding upright to vase-shaped deciduous shrub. Tolerant of most soils and drought tolerant once well established. Item# 9586.

8-10" long, double, creamy white, night fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year or nearly year round when grown in a greenhouse or conservatory. The Double White Angel's Trumpet, a form of Datura metel, is often grown as an annual or short-lived shrub-like perennial and it is easy enough to save a few seed from the large capsules once they split open to grow new ones for next year. These are fast growing small to medium-sized, shrub-like, frost tender tropical plants that are easy and rewarding. Also known as Devil's Trumpet, due to the poisonous properties of this member of the Nightshade family. Provide a full sun to partly shaded site, in a well-drained, fertile soil with average moisture for optimum vigor and flowering. Clusters of 4-6" fully double peony-like flowers open white and quickly change to pink and to near red by the day's end creating the 3 color effect of this cultivar's Tricolor name. 1/2" wide, pure white, double flowers almost resemble tiny white roses and the flowers shine against the foil of very dark green, small, ovate, fine textured foliage. The heaviest flowering typically occurs spring and may produce flowers sporadically into fall under good conditions. The Double White Serissa, Serissa foetida 'Flore Pleno', is a dwarf, naturally evergreen shrub with small fine-textured deep green glossy ovate leaves and a naturally mounding, semi-open habit and plants rarely exceed about 2'H x 2'W at maturity. In the past it has been used as a substitute for boxwood especially when a low clipped hedge was desired. Left to its own devices it may become more open with age and a semi-hard pruning can restore the plants to their former glory. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! The elegant formal-looking, medium-sized, semi-double, white to very pale pink flowers deepen to pink at their out edges and are centered by a boss of gold tipped stamens on white filaments. Flowering occurs in mid to late season, January to April, and the pollen laden flowers are sure to attract bees and other pollinators. Ducher is considered by many to be the only white China rose. The ivory to white, fragrant, double flowers are produced from spring through fall and are held against soft green foliage. With a more diminutive and refined habit than many China roses, Ducher is small enough for containers or in the garden. Ducher was selected as an Earthkind rose through the Texas AgriLife Extension service. Item# 9709.

Another excellent native shrub for the landscape! The dense neat mound of deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Walter's Dwarf Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum 'Densa', is a compact, densly branching selection of this southeastern native. This shrub's dense habit lends it to use anywhere a small to medium-sized shrub is desired in the landscape. It is generally evergreen into zone 8A and tends to be deciduous to semi-evergreen in zones 6 and 7. The Dwarf White Crown of Thorns produces a nearly year-round display of clusters of dainty, rounded pure white 'flowers', whose paired, rounded petals are actually bracts that surround the tiny true greenish to yellowish flowers. The sweetly contrasting bicolor flowers are composed of two large soft shell pink lower petals and a bright rosy pink tube and hood all emerging from maroon tinged calyxes and spikes. Dyson's Joy Salvia, or simply Joy Salvia, is likely a selection or hybrid of Salvia greggii or Autumn Sage, and develops into a compact rounded plant growing to about 2' x 2' that can be enjoyed as a container plant as well as in the garden and landscape. The brightly colored flowers attract low flying hummingbirds, occasional butterflies, and other pollinators with its nectar rich flowers. Provide a well-drained soil in full to mostly sunny conditions and never keep soggy wet. Golden yellow berries cover the stems of this wonderful selection of native deciduous holly from fall through spring (if the birds don't get them all!).
