Dyson's Joy Salvia, Autumn Sage

Salvia 'Dyson's Joy'

The sweetly contrasting bicolor flowers are composed of two large soft shell pink lower petals and a bright rosy pink tube and hood all emerging from maroon tinged calyxes and spikes. Dyson's Joy Salvia, or simply Joy Salvia, is likely a selection or hybrid of Salvia greggii or Autumn Sage, and develops into a compact rounded plant growing to about 2' x 2' that can be enjoyed as a container plant as well as in the garden and landscape. The brightly colored flowers attract low flying hummingbirds, occasional butterflies, and other pollinators with its nectar rich flowers. Provide a well-drained soil in full to mostly sunny conditions and never keep soggy wet. The rounded mass of steel blue narrow sword like foliage is topped by tall spikes of dangling creamy white bell-shaped flowers are produced in spring on mature plants. Excalibur Yucca, a selection of our native Yucca filamentosa, is grown mainly for its steely blue to gray-green foliage that provides a nice contrast to nearby plants. This is a tough as nails, clump-forming, evergreen, small  native shrub that has a naturally rounded habit and even though it is fairly drought resistant it happily thrives in most well-drained soils in a full sun to partly shaded site. Adam's Needle is found throughout much of the eastern and central US and as far west as Kansas and is common component in the Longleaf Pine understory. This RHS Award of Garden Merit selection produces large to very large, white, anemone form to semi-double flowers that are vividly flecked, and striped with deep pink to near red with a boss of gold tipped stamens atop yellow filaments in mid season or January and February. Extravaganza Camellia is a large flowered Japonica with a moderate rate of growth and a densely branching compact habit maturing into an 8-10' high by 6-8' wide, large evergreen shrub cloaked in deep green glossy foliage. The pollen laden flowers attract bees and potentially other pollinators on warmer days. Fragrant Fairies Camellia

Camellia 'Fragrant Fairies'

Hundreds of dainty, white, cupped blossoms, often lightly blushed pink, are nestled tightly together along the stems providing a light fragrance on warm winter and early spring days with the main flowering occurring between January and March to April. Fragrant Fairies Camellia is an exceptionally vigorous growing hybrid with an upright to semi-arching habit, the latter especially so when the plants are loaded with buds, that can reach 10-15' high and 6-8' wide. The plants are cloaked in a medium to fine-textured, very dark green foliage similar to a Sasanqua, but with a matte finish and the new growth tends to be red to bronze. It is vigorous enough that plants could be used as a screen or trained into a small tree form. For optimum growth and vigor provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. Fragrant, flattened clusters of fuzzy white, nectar rich flowers are produced in late summer and fall just as the Monarch butterflies are migrating southward and attracting a variety of late season pollinators like bees, butterflies, flower flies, and hummingbirds. The Fragrant White Mistflower, Ageratina havanensis, is a small to medium-sized, native, rounded shrub to shrub-like perennial cloaked in very dark green, semi-glossy, evergreen to semi-deciduous foliage and growing to 3-6' high and wide. This tough hombre is a native of the Edwards Plateau and is moderately drought resistant once well-estalblished. It is reported to flower best after a hard late winter or early spring pruning that promotes new growth and will also help to keep the plants more compact. A low growing member of the Verbena family, Frogfruit makes a beautiful, easy groundcover that is covered by tiny heads of dainty, nectar filled white flowers from late spring to fall. They enjoy moist soils but are moderately drought resistant once well established.
