My experience on hardiness (3/8/2014)
You might be interested in my experience concerning the hardiness of these skullcaps. I live on a sea island, surrounded by marsh in the lower corner of South Carolina. Being protected by normally warm waters, we are generally in that sliver of zone 9 that runs up our coast to Charleston. I bought two of the skullcaps back in 2001, a purplish one and another that was a soft salmon red. They thrived here unprotected in spite of the occasional frost which normally only lasted for a few hours in the early morning hours. The plants were large, evergreen and very healthy, The hummingbirds loved them because they bloomed for about 10 months of the year here. This past January/February we had several unprecedented bouts of temperatures below freezing for more than 30 hours each time. This extended freeze is apparently what killed the skullcaps. Perhaps my experience will help you to advise other gardeners concerning these plants. alice massey
