Since I purchased this plant from here, I have been recommending this species to everyone looking for a large, safe host plant for Pipevine swallowtails south of the Woolly pipevine's natural range. I have both species and this one is more vigorous in my conditions. I have it going up my standardized old elderberry here in Northeast FL. It was undamaged by several nights below freezing in December (including 25 degrees) and while the site was sheltered, it still knocked out the red firespike so I know the site got below freezing.

This and the white-veined pipestem (also purchased here) are the only exotic pipevines I grow due to the others being toxic traps to the Pipevine swallowtail. I find the foliage of both more interesting too. A. trilobata leaves look somewhat more glossy and the texture is a good foil to many plants.

My A trilobata arrived on time and gloriously packed! I've had so many bad experiences with shipped plants for various suppliers, but this was a great experience. All shipped with many (10+) healthy leaves - packed in corrugated cardboard and taped in place - no damage. Will certainly order again in the future.

The vines arrived nicely packaged and full of nice thick leaves. The caterpillars transitioned to this plant when I ran out of Aristolochia Fimbriata. The caterpillars take longer to get through a leaf because these leaves are thick when mature. The plant quickly resprouted new tender leaves. The butterflies that eclosed from the batch that ate A trilobata are back laying eggs on these plants. Atrilobata feeds caterpillars better and lasts longer than A fimbriata.
