Huge clusters of 1-1/2" tubular yellow flowers are borne profusely throughout summer and fall on this vigorous shrub-like perennial and attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The flowers are sweetly fragrant at night and likely attract hummingbird moths. Lemon Zest Cestrum becomes large and shrub like in mild winter climates whereas in the coldest portions of its range, like zone 8B, it will often freeze to the ground and return in spring. A loose breathable mulch will also help to ensure that your Cestrum returns each spring. If you have purchased Orange or Yellow Cestrum from us in the past it is the cultivar Orange Zest. An impressively cold hardy fig producing medium-sized amber, brown to near burgundy colored fruit with rich sweet amber flesh. Letizia Fig is sometimes compared to Chicago Hardy with which it shares exceptional hardiness into zone 6 but the fruit may be slightly smaller. It is also known to produce a breba or early crop along with the typical main fruit crop. This is an heirloom Italian fig that was brought from the Marche region of Italy in the early 1900's by the family of Steve and Peg Castorani and was named in honor of Steve's mother Letizia. Steve's family has grown and fruited this plant in Hockessin, Delaware since about 1965 and Steve brought cuttings to their North Creek Nursery near Landenberg, Pennsylvania where it apparently has done well in a semi-protected 'hot garden'. Burpee suggested that they name it and propagate and it quickly sold out. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a well-drained, average moist, fertile soil for optimum vigor and fruit production. A rare and unusual succulent, the Lifesaver Cactus produces burgundy and tan star-shaped flowers that look as though a grape lifesaver has been stuck perfectly in their center. This is a low growing to trailing succulent with softly toothed 4-angled thick succulent stems that root into the soil anywhere they are in contact with it making it an easy plant to share. The Lifesaver Cactus makes for an easy and forgiving container plant for a porch, patio, or window and prefers a well-draining cactus-like soil. Grow it in an area that receives high indirect sunlight as it normally grows in the shade of larger desert plants in its native Africa. The large, 2" wide, widely flaring, upward facing flowers are of the purest white with the tips of each petal painted with an ever deepening pink. Tall, dense spikes composed of large, blue-purple, tubular flowers that emerge from chartreuse colored calyxes beginning and late summer and continuing into fall attracting hummingbirds, larger butterflies, and potentially some larger bees. Limelight Mexican Sage, a selection of Salvia mexicana, is a vigorous, large growing, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial adorned in large, deep green to bluish-green foliage that acts as a nice foil for the lighter colored flower spikes. Deep violet flowers with a white eye hang like grapes from this upright to arching, deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub. The flowers of Lindley's Butterfly Bush, Buddleja lindleyana, are produced nearly continuously from late spring to fall and attract a variety of pollinators including hummingbirds, butterflies, and larger bees. Grown for its evergreen burgundy foliage more so than its large deep purplish-red, Formosa Azalea-like flowers. Little John Evergreen Azalea matures into a small to medium-sized evergreen shrub with a naturally rounded habit. Little Volcano Lespedeza adds loads of color to the fall garden in shades of purple, pink, and near red. The arching branches of Little Volcano Japanese Lespedeza are covered by large clusters of dainty pea-shaped flowers over an extended period in September and October with spring flowering on plants that are not frozen back hard. A durable pest and disease resistant shrub-like perennial that may freeze to the ground in the northern portions of its range, where winters are milder it will act as a deciduous shrub. The large anemone form flowers range from solid white to light pink and occasionally with some variegation all on the same plant and are produced over a fairly long period in early to midseason, Nov-February. Intense pure red, massive, dinner plate sized flowers are produced beginning in early summer and continuing until fall on this vigorous and free flowering perennial Hibiscus. Lord Baltimore is one of the first widely cultivated Hardy Hibiscus developed by Robert Darby in the 1950's and it is still popular to this day! Perennial Hibiscus produce the largest flowers of any perennial in the garden and the rich red of Lord Baltimore may even stop traffic, if accidentally. Large flattened to slightly rounded clusters of clean white flowers are produced over a long period in late winter and early spring and attract a myriad of pollinators and other garden beneficials. Young stems are deep red to maroon and the foliage is glossy and deep dark green creating a nicely contrasting foil for the white flowers. Lord Byron Viburnum is a hybrid of our natives Viburnum obovatum and V. rufidulum and exhibits the durability and adaptability of both species with a close resemblance to V. rufidulum, the Rusty Blackhaw. Lord Byron naturally develops into a medium to large shrub and its only drawback is that it tends to produce suckers, in our experience, which may be desirable particularly in naturalistic settings. Deep glowing red, starry flowers with tubular throats are held on sturdy 24-36" high stems and flower over an extended period beginning in summer and often into fall under good conditions. An obviously hummingbird pollinated perennial but it aslo attracts some larger butterflies, especially Sulphurs. The Louisiana Catchfly, Silene subciliata, is a rare, drought resistant, clump forming, tap-rooted, native perennial that is found only in Western Louisiana and East Texas. It is typically seen growing on well-drained sandy loams to loamy sands and so areas with good to excellent drainage will be optimum. While the Louisiana Catchfly can tolerate the filtered shade of open Longleaf Pine forests, plants tend to be sturdier and shorter in full to mostly sunny sites. The rosettes are cloaked in rounded narrow, medium-green foliage and remain evergreen in zone 8B. This is one of the few Silenes that easily tolerates the heat and humidity of Southeastern summers. Much like our old favorite the Butterfly Ginger but with much larger (like the size of a Luna Moth) white fragrant flowers that are borne from early summer to fall on shorter sturdier stems to 3-4'H and large lush tropical foliage. The medium-sized, perfect or rose form flowers are deep cherry red on the outer petals often lightening to a rich complementary pink on the innermost petals and are produced over an extended period from early to late season or November to April. Madame Lebois Camellia, a.k.a. Rosedale's Beauty, is a vigorous growing, heirloom, Large Flowered Japonica with a dense branching habit eventually developing into a large evergreen shrub to about 8-10' high and 6-8' wide. For optimum growth and vigor provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. Clusters of rich orange, 2" long, tubular flowers with yellow throats are produced in late winter or early spring and continue cyclically throughout summer and into fall attracting mainly hummingbirds and potentially other pollinators. Magnifica Coral or Trumpet Honeysuckle, a selection of Lonicera sempervirens, is a deciduous to semi-evergreen, twining, woody, native vine that grows to about 10' high and is cloaked in blue-green to deep green rounded foliage. The flowers are followed by 1/4" red berries that are a treat for songbirds. This is a mannerly and manageable vine and will happily twine through a 6' high chain link fence or up an 8-10' arbor, trellis, or post. Few other native woody vines can boast such a long flowering season as the Coral Honeysuckles making them our #1 pick for attracting hummingbirds. Magnolia or Brunswick produces a good crop of medium to large bronze to purple figs with good quality pink to amber flesh with tiny seeds and open eye. The fruit ripens over a long season.
